He ain’t got laid in a month of Sundays
Caught him once, and he was sniffin my undies

    In spite of ourselves
We’ll end up sittin’ on a Rainbow
Against all odds, honey we’re the big door prize
We’re gonna spite our noses right off of our faces
There won’t be nuthin’ but big ol’ hearts dancin’ in our eyes

John Prine and Lucinda Williams; Thank You!!!

I wanna watch the ocean bend, the edges of the sun in
I wanna get swallowed up, in the ocean of love

Admittedly, Lucinda’s voice on this really burns it into my heart.

I could not find the song/album with the lyric, something like:

“…make you believe in magic, or money well spent…”

I thought is was circa 2002, but maybe it is buried in John Prine’s early catalog. Maybe someone here knows it. ??

    John and Stan,

I listened to your music (that you pointed to) and really enjoyed it. I hope you both continue with it.

Most of the lyrics can be sung from the male perspective without much changing (“he” to “she” and so on). Males, obviously won’t have Lucinda’s same gorgeous voice (no one could). Pick a song(s) that works best with your voice. Also, do something with some Lucinda’s vocal inflections/style to make the song(s) into (your) performance (like revving up Essence). To try an exact copy, will obviously fall way short, while building on it gives you a chance to be creative. I always remeber seeing a band do “Born to be Wild” with a violin lead. It might have sucked on an album, but in the moment, it was excellent.

Lucinda was on the fringes of my conciousness (enjoyed her on the radio) for a few years before I bought “World Without Tears” as a valentine present for my girlfriend (not sure 03 or 04). Several tracks struck me (the girlfriend didn’t have the same soul for music but liked it) on the first listen, and in time, all of it worked down deep into my soul. I got “Car Wheels…” in late summer 06. Two listens, and I thought, “Hell yes, it won the grammy!… It should win it several years in a row… Maybe until her next album can take the prize!”. I just got Essence, and am floored, even though I know some of the songs from my Lucinda Williams station at Pandora.com. I will be collecting the entire catalog.

I am new here, and while I haven’t joined a social forum to discuss music before, this feels so natural, as we here are on the same wavelength.

Just remembered: Hearing the duet on the radio with Lucinda and John Prine, “In Spite of Ourselves” was truly a joy, and that is how I knew that WWT was a great valentine sentiment/gesture.
