whiskeyboyParticipantHave not read it again in these past 14 years. What I do remeber is I had a filmmaker friend who was a drinking buddy of Lu’s at the time, and according to him, Lu was not pleased with the piece. It seems the NYer folks, as I recall he said there were two of them who came down, never left their hotel room. There was also an article around the same time in the NY Times Sunday Magazine.
whiskeyboyParticipantThe word on the street is that the album will also be available in a limited leather & wood bound ten 78 RPM edition on shellac, along with videos on 8 mm film. Akin to the special Beatles mono cartridge coming out to celebrate the mono Beatles box set, cartridge maker Grado is coming out with a special Lu 78 RPM cartridge and audiophile turntable maker VPI is bringing out a line of 78 RPM tables. It is believed that the retro “Back to Shellac” movement that began by hipsters in Brooklyn is gaining traction and will become mainstream by year’s end. And I also hear that the original title was “Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bong.”

Very good set, band has gotten even tighter. New guitar solos are extremely nice. One one “new” song, but Lu’s been doing it for over a year now, so Its new only in the sense that it has yet to be issued on record. I think the lack of other new songs was a conscious decision as it was a free concert. Thus, quite a few folks did not know her stuff all that well. So, go with the songs that are available to sell some albums. That said, everyone down front were, of course, long time Lu fans.
whiskeyboyParticipantwhiskeyboyParticipantTom has just posted a nice addendum to the No Depression piece:

And an update on the new record.

whiskeyboyParticipantAny idea on the source for the the LP? Remastered for LP?
whiskeyboyParticipantLast week I did an A-B comparison of the original RT vinyl that I purchased on the first day of its release (I had it on pre-order from my local indie store, the only copy the store initially ordered) with the translucent red re-release. On my all tube electronics and Magneplanar speakers I found little difference. That said, the ’88 sounds just a tad more raw, the ’14 sounds a bit more rounded at the very top end, bass feels fuller on the ’14, but more realistic on the ’88. In other words, get the new one if you don’t already have it on vinyl. While I have not A-B-ed the CDs or CD-vinyl, the CD sounds quite good as well.
