That book shtuff and Lu feeling she needs to apologize for it makes me sooooo mad!! “The Book” means that Lu has composed an incredible library of great songs, and on any given night you just may be privileged to hear one of the rarer gems. Because of “The Book”, no two shows are ever the same. And that can’t be said for most of the more polished “performers” whose shows are pretty much cookie-cutter, including the banter between songs. If you see one show of a tour, you don’t need to see any others, you know what’s happening next. Give me honest and authentic and surprises any day – that’s what makes life interesting. ๐Ÿ™‚

Wooooooooooo, here is a Halloween treat – no trick – from Chuck E Prophet, from his sorta monthly e-newsletter. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Folks,

If you just tuned in, I’m out playing some solo gigs in the Wild East. Playing some new songs from Temple Beautiful – the record we’re currently wrestling to the ground. For better or worse, the record is a kind of love letter to San Francisco. It won’t be out until January but we’re giving a track away for Halloween because… well, I don’t know why… because we’re generous and it just seemed timely, that’s all!

    It’s called Castro Halloween.

Download it for free here: http://fburls.com/95-4e2a7e9H

They say tricks are for kids…and phone sex is for adults, and Halloween is for preadolescents in Lady Gaga and Ghadafi masks. But one thing is for sure: everyone knows you can’t top the Castro Halloween for beautiful freaky weirdness. I can’t say I’ve ever been much for costumes, but in true Chauncey Gardner fashion I like to watch.

A couple years ago things got out of hand. Someone brought a gun to a party, and that was that. Now it’s up in the air whether they’ll have Halloween in the ‘hood. They tried to move it to Civic Center a couple times but guess what, it’s not the same. Long live the Castro Halloween!

    Love and Rockets,

    CP

Thanks, Rhon! Sounds like you got an especially exceptional show and setlist! The Ram’s Head “Never-Ending Show” remains my all-time favorite – tee-hee that Blake and Lu referenced it. ๐Ÿ˜€

Blake’s CD is great, especially so for roadtrips. ๐Ÿ™‚

Great show tonight! Lu and the band sounded great and at times, Blake made his guitar sound almost like a piano – never heard anything like it. ๐Ÿ™‚

The show was in the “An Evening With” format, where there is no opening act, the first set is the mellower tunes, there’s a brief intermission, and then the second set is the more rocking songs. The only negative was the Ghost of Snooky Future sitting behind us who talked through the entire show, virtually non-stop.

    1. World Without Tears
    2. People Talkin’ (hmmm….maybe this is what gave Snooky the idea…)
    3. Jackson – “This is a beautiful sounding room, and I like the stars in the background.”
    4. I Don’t Know How You’re Livin’ – “I wrote this for my younger brother, the same one I wrote ‘Are You Alright’ about. I am still wondering… He’s sort of the prodigal son, the prodigal brother.”
    5. Copenhagen
    6. Born To Be Loved – “That’s one of my favorite songs to perform, and this next one is my other favorite, that we recently recorded for a Bob Dylan benefit album for Amnesty International”
    7. Trying To Get To Heaven
    8. Fruits of My Labor
    9. Stowaway – “This is a song we wrote but haven’t recorded yet… that will probably be on the next album.”
    10. 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten

    INTERMISSION

    11. Concrete and Barbed Wire
    12. Crescent City – “Emmy Lou Harris did a great version of this song”
    13. Well, Well, Well – Butch wore the frottoir – Cajun word for his washboard vest. Not to be confused with fatwah. Thanks for the vocabulary lesson, Stoger. ๐Ÿ˜‰
    14. Drunken Angel
    15. Buttercup
    16. Righteously
    17. Changed The Locks
    18. Joy
    19. Honey Bee

    ENCORE
    20. Blessed – solo acoustic start with band walking on
    21. Ain’t My Cross To Bear
    22. For What It’s Worth – “…support for the Occupy Wall Street movement, the greatest demonstrations since the Vietnam War protests…” Huge audience enthusiasm.

The stench, well, the stench is noticeable if not unbearable. Let’s just say the tour bus (which I spotted through a hole in a huge barn) will do well to keep its doors closed unless someone really needs to exit or reboard quickly… funny, I kind of liked the experience last night Well, sort of.

The moral of this show story is to stay away from the stockyards. Got it.

It really was a laughter- and fun-filled night, chockful of disaster movie type misadventures. Was anything but a snarky report possible from a girl who is a vegetarian (and Billy Bobโ€™s menu consists of things like BBQ Baloney and Nachos made with potato chips, BBQ sauce, and brisket), who is allergic to cigarette smoke, whose favorite type of venue has a standing area in front of the stage for the more rabid fans and the elevated seating areas around the perimeter for those who prefer to sit? It was not my scene, but it was an adventure! There was even an indoor cattle corral behind the stageโ€ฆ maybe everyone should experience it at least once in their lives. ๐Ÿ™‚

Please let me preface this by saying Billy Bobโ€™s was my least favorite venue ever for seeing any show, and the situation wasnโ€™t helped any by getting soaked on the way in by the first monsoon after a year-long(?) draught in the Lone Star State. And then having the extra-strength A/C pummeling down on my wet hair and clothes and blowing papers all around, being seated at long PTA style tables, being told by the officials at this world-renowned honky tonk that dancing wasnโ€™t allowed, lots of cigarette smoke, and acoustics so bad we really couldnโ€™t understand what Lu was saying โ€“ hence no narrative recap, just the set list follows. Cannot wait to see the Charleston show to have this one wiped from my memory. Luโ€™s and the bandโ€™s performance was good, but the venue – oy.

    1. Canโ€™t Let Go
    2. Metal Firecracker
    3. Pineola
    4. Crescent City
    5. Concrete and Barbed Wire
    6. Well, Well, Well
    7. Price to Pay
    8. Over Time
    9. Born To Be Loved
    10. Blue
    11. Drunken Angel
    12. I Lost It
    13. Still I Long For Your Kiss
    14. Out of Touch
    15. Real Live Bleeding Fingers
    16. Changed The Locks
    17. Joy
    18. Honey Bee

    Encore
    19. Blessed
    20. Itโ€™s Not My Cross To Bear (Allman Bros cover)
    21. Get Right With God

Tickets for San Francisco are on sale now at http://www.livenation.com. Also, when you purchase a ticket, Live Nation sends you a $5 voucher code to use on your next purchase. Therefore, my Saturday ticket cost $52.50, and with the code my Sunday ticket was $47.50. Every little bit helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m still waiting on West Words to sneak a pen in old-school and test the confiscatory skills of the powers-that-be. Do these guys moonlight as security at Bills’ games?

That is just the craziest restriction ever, but I’ll bet there was an ‘incident’ that caused the rule. I wonder if a crayon could be a loophole…

Just bring a list of Lucinda’s songs, and a sheet of numbered sticker-dots (like art galleries use to key paintings/photos to the artist list). Then, affix a dot to the list, as each song is performed.

Not bad, but Lu’s potential song list could be very, very long, and there might be surprise covers thrown in…
