West Words has been swirling in the Vortex of Doom for about the past year, and it has even begun to manifest in Lu travels.

For the Colorado shows, of course there was the horrific massacre. On an annoying level, the valet caused about $5,000 worth of damage to my rental car, with the hotel trying to absolve themselves of liability. By dumb luck and for the first time ever, I had just happened to take a picture of the car the day prior which allowed me to prove that it wasn’t damaged prior. I think I may start making a practice of that.

My New York trip’s challenge has been with internet access and lots of time spent on the phone with tech support.

The Bowery’s second show wasn’t nearly as much fun for me as the first night. My crippled old back wouldn’t allow me to stand two nights in a row, so I stood away from the stage against a wall. There was an essence of Ben Gay in the air, but it wasn’t mine.

There was a gaggle of blonde hipsters, both male and female – who talked non-stop throughout the show. Not about Lucinda, more of the “Oh, your hair looks so nice, where did you get it done? Oh hi, this is my friend so and so, remember the one I told you about?” And more blonde blather on and on and on and on, not that there is anything wrong with being blonde. I went tntracy on them in my own way, which was to just stick my head into their conversation and listen intently. Hipsters don’t like that one bit, but it doesn’t deter them for long.

Another female forum member who was up at the stage was getting molested by some guy standing behind her, who was there with his wife. Said forum member snapped and gave him the what for, and some decent guy jumped in and told idiot he needed to leave.

I am sure Lu and the guys did a great job, but my perception was muddied by the aforementioned factors.

    1. Pineola
    2. Car Wheels
    3. I Lost It
    4. People Talkin’ (HOW APPROPRIATE!!!)
    5. Greenville
    6. Ventura
    7. Born To Be Loved
    8. Blue
    9. Trying to Get to Heaven
    10. Sweet Side (tour debut)
    11. I Need Protection
    12. Seeing Black (yay! perhaps Lu’s most under-appreciated song; was thrilled to get to hear this)
    13. Bleeding Fingers
    14. Out of Touch
    15. Unsuffer Me
    16. Essence
    17. Honey Bee – ‘We need to write more songs like that. I think the Ramones got in there subliminally.’
    18. Joy

    Encore:
    19. Hard Time Killing Floor Blues
    20. For What It’s Worth – with Amy and David

Hi there all just want to say a huge thank you to stoger for the mentions in his post, I am the man from Australia and am still in wonder about catching lucinda the other night. Words are not enough to explain what it meant to be so far from home, yet meet total strangers, feel like they are old friends, share a common love of Lucinda’s talent and top it off with an amazing show. I must be in heaven? Fate works in the strangest of ways. Thank you to everyone we met the other night, I knew this trip was going to be amazing, but the experience of the other night will be pretty hard to top. Thanks again to all.

Dulux, it was a pleasure meeting you – what great energy you exude! Welcome, and hope to see you again at some future shows. 🙂

The show tonight was magnificent! Sound was great, everyone was in great form firing on all cylinders, and having fun.

    1. Lake Charles (solo)

    2. Side of the Road (duo with Doug)

    3. Bitter Memory (duo with Doug) – ‘That’s the biggest applause we’ve gotten so far for that song.’

    4. Can’t Let Go – full band

    5. Drunken Angel – ‘Blaze Foley was a big, funny guy, but sad inside.”

    6. Fruits of My Labor – Doug took this to the stratosphere

    7. World Without Tears – ‘We’ve been on the road four weeks, and already have seen two instances of insane violence. The Sikhs were practicing their peaceful religion, a celebration of God and love. Suffice it to say, we need to get a handle on gun control. “What were you going to do with that AK-47?” It’s not for hunting deer! This is dedicated to the victims.’

    8. Copenhagen

    9. Are You Down – ‘This is one I really like to do, because it features the band.’

    10. Buttercup

    11. Something Wicked This Way Comes – ‘This is a hellfire / brimstone Southern Gothic kind of thing. I was crediting Ray Bradbury, but it’s really Shakespeare’s Macbeth, so he borrowed it. That’s how it works; nobody owns anything really. Both my grandfathers were Methodist preachers, so I don’t know what people are thinking between ‘Something Wicked’ and ‘Get Right With God’… When I was a teenager, I was an avid reader and read everything by Flannery O’Connor that I could get my hands on. ‘

    12. Essence

    13. Come On

    14. Ain’t My Cross To Bear – ‘This band, even when it’s loose, it’s still good – like Crazy Horse. They were always my ideal band.’

    15. Righteously – ‘Here’s a funny anecdote about this song. I walked into a bar – seriously – a neighborhood bar in Burbank. They had karaoke, and I saw this song, and then I knew I’d made it! I told the girl not to tell anyone it was me, but she blew my cover. That was weird singing my own karaoke song.’

    16. Changed The Locks

    17. Honey Bee (with David)

    18. Joy (with David) – Lu did the Wayne’s World ‘I’m Not Worthy’ to both David and Doug

    Encore:
‘It’s custom, a little formality we have to walk off stage and everybody claps, and we come back on.’

    19. Ain’t Got No Home – ‘This Woody Guthrie song and the one after it we worked on for the Fillmore San Francisco shows last year, in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement.’

Then there was a false start – “Wrong damned key…”

Then after the song – ‘Ramblin’ Jack Elliott came on the bus after the Vancouver show. He’s 81 years old, sharp as a tack, and good lookin’. He showed me a picture of his girlfriend who’s 60, said he feels like he’s robbing the cradle.’

    20. Factory – with Doug on pedal steel

    21. Blessed

    22. Get Right With God (with Amy and David)

FUN SHOW!!!! Thank you so much for a great night!

Okay, so no matter how I tried, I could not get my Arvada version of “Something Wicked” to upload. Here it is from the Columbia show. You know it’s an especially good song when Lu growls. 😀

And I can attest to TNT’s bouncer prowess at the Orange Peel show in Asheville. Those loud and pushy “ladies” were annoying and very intrusive! TNT obliterated them and promptly took care of the problem. You definitely want him in your vicinity to maintain the decorum. Thanks TNT!

Thanks, Tony! Perhaps the funniest review ever. Made me feel like I was there, and at the same time, kinda grateful that instead I was safe at home.

Can’t deny the power of a full moon…

Lucinda Williams on the Colorado Tragedy
Posted by Michael Bialas on July 23, 2012 at 9:30am

Before performing a new song — “Stowaway in Your Heart” — in suburban Denver on July 22 in the aftermath of the midnight movie massacre in nearby Aurora, Lucinda Williams said she and her three-piece band were “trying to do some healing tonight and also try and cheer everybody up a little bit.”

Later in the two-hour, 21-song set at the Arvada Center outdoor amphitheatre, she said, “I’ve been doing a lot of writing lately. That always feels good. Looking forward to getting back in the studio with these new songs. I just taught this one to the band today at sound check. I borrowed the title from a Ray Bradbury novel. I hope that’s OK. It’s called ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes.’ “

After that song, Williams got choked up while again discussing the Aurora tragedy in which 12 people were killed and 58 were wounded at a showing of The Dark Knight Rises at Century Aurora 16 in the early morning hours of July 20. “I’ve been watching the beautiful prayer vigil unfolding in Aurora. I watched that a couple hours before the show. Like they said, everybody’s been affected directly and indirectly like a ripple when you throw a stone in the water. I think there’s a reason that we were here. We played shows these last three nights all in Colorado. …

“I don’t know. But something changed within me, I think over, these last few nights. I just feel more connected with people. … What President Obama said when he came to Aurora and he spoke a little bit (on Sunday). I was hoping he’d say something like that. He didn’t get into it too much. But, you know, he said, ‘We’re gonna make sure this doesn’t happen again.’ We need to make sure people can’t get ahold of those kind of weapons. Somebody needs to be here going, ‘Hey, wait a second. What were you gonna do with this stuff?’ “

Here is a piece about the UM Press –

Lucinda Williams gives UM Press a shout-out

    By JANESE SILVEY
    Posted July 25, 2012 at 9:54 a.m.

I underestimated the Save the UM Press folks.

Or maybe I underestimated Lucinda Williams.

Regardless, I was wrong when I said it was “improbable” that Williams would mention the closure of the press during her concert in Columbia.

The award-winning singer did, indeed, give the UM Press a shout-out during her performance at Stephens Lake Park last night, multiple concert goers tell me.

According to reports, Williams talked about her father, Miller Williams, who founded the University of Arkansas Press, and said during an encore that she understands the value of a university press.

Not sure a mention from a celebrity will cause UM President Tim Wolfe to undo the decision to close the press, but it’s a further indication of just how much attention the university is getting nationally.

Not only is Williams aware of the situation and interested enough to mention it at a concert, anyone who reads the New York Times, Chronicle of Higher Education, Publisher’s Weekly or any Missouri media outlet also is learning a lot about how MU and the UM System operates—and it’s not flattering.

As s Hank Waters noted in his editorial yesterday: “I know of no one with serious interest in the University of Missouri Press or its kin nationwide who is happy with changes in the offing for the local operation.”

Wolfe underestimated the pushback. He told the KC Star that he expected some disapproval but not the huge outcry—that now includes Lucinda William’s voice.

Oh, I long to come to NYC. I was this close [ ] but realized I promised my brother a visit to see him in Chicago the weekend prior.

Oh, but NYC would be sooooo easy, no changing hotels, no travelling between shows, etc. PLUS, that week is a milestone birthday for moi. You need to be there. Perhaps check to see if your bro even remembers your promise? 🙂
