I’m loving the above info on the tour debuts and songs not often played live! And the requests are very sweet. I remember in Greensboro a few years ago when Lu said someone requested Are You Alright and dedicated it to a war buddy; he would play the song at his friend’s grave. I think of that every time I hear it now. Touching.
The song most likely to blow my speakers on DWTSMTB is Everything But The Truth... Totally worth any resulting tinnitus π I would love to hear it in NYC on Monday night! Viv
vmorrisParticipantThe solo newbie reviewer above raises a point that I have thought about also… Why is Lucinda the only artist I don’t mind seeing by myself? In many ways I prefer going solo. And anyone I bring must be a Serious Fan of music generally if not Lucinda specifically. I think it’s such a testament to Lu as a person and musician.
vmorrisParticipantThe song is also referenced in the book on which the movie is based! In Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild about her solo trek on the Pacific Coast Trail after her mother’s death and her own self-destruction, she talks about one day on the trail when she filled the time by deciphering the lyrics to Lucinda Williams’ “Something About What Happens When We Talk.” It was a nice shout-out to our Lovely One in a bestselling book. π It would be cool if that’s how the song is included in the movie itself! Viv
vmorrisParticipantStoger,
I’m seeing The Jayhawks tomorrow night (10/22) at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC! Can’t wait! I don’t know if I’ll know all the song titles to post a full report, but I’ll try… Now to figure out when I can catch Bob… Viv
vmorrisParticipantThat most worthy of publications, Garden & Gun, has reviewed DWTSMTB in its October/November 2014 issue (on newstands now!). I can’t find a link to it, but it’s short so I’ll type it:
“In the album biography that accompanies her new double record, Lucinda Williams says that ‘the saddest joys are the richest ones.’ It’s an apt description and something her father, the poet Miller Williams, once told her. She uses one of his poems in the stark opening track, ‘Compassion,’ which kicks off a journey of mournful country soul (the epic ‘West Memphis’) mixed with sassy roots rock (‘Protection’), and the exultant ‘Walk On,’ which is about as finger-snappy as Williams has ever been. Spirit is a lot to digest, but the rewards are well worth the effort.” M.H.
What does “the album biography” refer to?? Just the liner notes?
Also, here’s a link to a neat interview with Lucinda and Miller from the same magazine in 2009: http://gardenandgun.com/article/family-tradition ==> “LUCINDA: Flannery OβConnorβs writing and Hank Williamsβs music explain everything you need to know about me as an artist.”
vmorrisParticipantDavidK, Thanks for posting the Rolling Stone article… two goodies:
“A lot of times, I just write about the eternal sadness that never goes away.” That sentence is a song in itself.
“One time I got fired because I wasn’t perky enough on the phone.” Maybe that’s part of the inspiration for “Wrong Number” π
vmorrisParticipantButch looks really different without his cowboy hat π Alot like Questlove!
vmorrisParticipantThanks to stoger for the head’s up about Slim’s! I just got the happy news that my Lu essay landed two tickets π They asked for a single favorite Lu musical experience, but I didn’t have just one, so I ended up handing in a 3-page essay. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing, right?
SamishSeaMike, I’m sure you will receive tix as a Lu fan of the highest order (especially if you included a picture of your Lu tattoo!), but if something unexpected happens, I would rather my second ticket go to a true fan (from Seattle, my hometown, no less!) than one of my drunken Bay Area friends (not that there’s anything wrong with that – ha). π Hope to meet you at Slim’s, Viv
vmorrisParticipantDear DavidK,
Thanks for the above insight into reviewers’ mindsets… sometimes reviews just baffle me, so your thoughts are helpful! Viv
vmorrisParticipantLafayette, This is the coolest news ever! You must wear those super hot Old Gringo boots! And I think this occasion warrants a new hat purchase! Have fun on your date with John π Viv
vmorrisParticipantI just bought tix to the pre-Thanksgiving Nashville shows at The City Winery from their website. I’m not sure how I bought the tickets because it doesn’t appear to be public at this point, but I did try “sprit” as a presale code and that might have gone through, but they also might have recognized my membership in the Chicago City Winery… Not sure which. Anyway, go forth and good luck! Viv
vmorrisParticipantI agree that the brand-spanking-new City Winery Nashville venue was perhaps not quite ready for prime time, but the way Lafayette and I dealt with it was by drinking more wine! The house cab/merlot blend was yummy and took the edges off and softened the vision so I didn’t notice the unpainted walls and construction debris so much π About the set itself, I think that Protection is going to bring the house down on the fall tour. It keeps getting better and better live. I must say that my favorite moment of Lu’s recent shows (that I’ve attended) has been Unsuffer Me going directly into Essence. There is something about these two songs together, they share the same heart of longing and desperation, the same spare atmosphere, that gets me every time. Brilliant combo. And opening with Blessed where it’s just Lu with her guitar and the other band members join one-by-one is just beautiful and affecting. Thanks to Lu and Tom for all they do! Viv
vmorrisParticipantAntetomic, Yes! Lu in Croatia! Beautiful music in a beautiful town and country! Maybe stop in Dubrovnik, too π I would be there. We could have povitica and Lucinda would LOVE the wine! Viv
vmorrisParticipantYes, Westwords, Thank you so much for posting this review. It is a beautiful review and, in my opinion, does the artist and the albums justice. Viv
vmorrisParticipantHappy loving wishes to the beautiful couple! Last year on this day I was lucky enough to see Lu’s show at The Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC, where she played a gorgeous version of Plan to Marry. One of the best concert moments of all time for me (and I am a live music junkie). Many more happy years together! Vivian
