June 24, 2014 at 5:56 am in reply to: Fall Tour 2014-starts after Santa Monica pier on 9/26/14 #53086trobertsParticipantHoping the Fall Tour 2014 will include some western Canada stops!! Need a live Lucinda fix!!!
Edmonton Winspear maybe? And/or Calgary? Loving the reissue btw. 🙂
trobertsParticipantI am soooo looking forward to seeing Lucinda at Vancouver Folk Fest on Friday. I’m giddy thinking about it. Excited to see what songs you’ll pick for this beautiful outdoor show beside the ocean. Always hoping for Side of the Road but I’ll happily take whatever I get!! Safe travels to you all on the tour!! 🙂
trobertsParticipantI see Lucinda is making her way up to Vancouver in July. I’m going to try to make the trip for that show. But hoping she also makes it over to Alberta again sometime later in the tour. Sadly I missed the Alberta shows last summer. It broke my heart a little to miss the Winspear show in Edmonton…
Anyway, as I must do every year or two, I’m just planting the seed to remember Alberta in your tour planning! 🙂
trobertsParticipantI really can’t get enough of the new CD.. It’s a little more mellow than other Lucinda CDs which surprised me at first but the more I listen, the more I can’t get enough. There are some really beautiful songs on here. My expectations were high and Blessed met them. Plus I love that Blessed is the title – a good reminder for us all each day to be grateful for all that we have.
Now I just hope Western Canada gets a few tour dates so I can hear the new songs live!!
trobertsParticipantLW in 09 – this is tough – I agree with previous posts that what I love about LW shows is you never know. I have seen her maybe 11 times in the last 18 years and each show has been a surprise. I do see that her shows often flow from start to finish like her albums culminating in a big blues number that they really rock out on live. Anyway, I’ll try to vote
1) Shows that would have a chronological setlist like the second set of the first show in Mpls or the show in Madison (1-10)
9 – I saw a set like this in Edmonton (ST Albert) this month – I felt it was a lucky treat – however the reason we loved it so much was because it was unexpected and was a walk through her musical career accompanied by LW’s stories of where she was at. In this time of internet set lists are shared from town to town so having a few different set lists for a tour keeps you wondering what she’ll do in your town.2) Shows that would have split sets -with the first set being ballads etc, a break, and then the second set being rock (1-10)
7 – I think ultimately I love LW’s ballads more than her rock and blues and know that others probably are exactly the opposite – so I think that it’s nice to have a set list that integrates both – otherwise you get all you love in one half and then the other half is all another theme. The way her set list usually builds up and then slows down is part of the beauty of an LW show. I always feel her set lists seem to be so carefully selected (much like musicians carefully order songs on their records)
3) Similar to number 2– in larger cities where we could do it or where the right venue exists–doing two nights, with the first night being the ballads etc and the second night more rock (1-10)
9 – I would LOVE this and would definitely go both nights if only I lived in a bigger city than Edmonton and would even have this option!
4) Closing the year with a return of the album shows -probably only in one city (1-10)
10 – not sure if I could ever make one of these shows but I loved the idea of it last time and can only imagine how great it would be to sit through an entire album that you love. The Chronological set felt like a mini version of this – very cool.
5) Don’t change anything -I like the shows as they are. (1-10)
10 – ultimately I would say this is my fave option – the way LW shakes it up from show to show is part of her magic. But certainly throwing in the chronological sets in towns that are close together or that support 2 nights (in case people go to 2 shows 2 nights in a row) is a great thing!
In a different and more general category:
1) To offset the venues that charge Ticketmaster fees -we are considering offering those fees back as a credit at the merch table -does this have appeal (1-10)8- this has appeal but I think we’re all used to paying those damn fees anyway. But yeah, if I had a credit for my fees this past tour I would have splurged for an LW shirt. (especially because they were particularly nice shirts) Instead I grabbed 2 Little Honey stickers and made magnets (you should do that next time!)
2) Being aware of the past fan club fiasco- does a fan club hold any appeal if it made sense and had value? (1-10)
6-I don’t know the last “fan club fiasco” but I must say I value this site and am never really sure about fan clubs (how long do my fees get me a membership, do I really hear about shows first? am I really part of the “official” fan club?) I LOVE this LW site and that you all actually manage it and listen so if a fan club would lessen this contact – that would be a shame. Also, how many sites can a person find time to visit? Could the fan club be attached to this site maybe?3) The possibility of being able to buy tickets before the general public -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10)
10-I love this idea – and ultimately if I had to join the fan club to do this – LW is one performer I would do this for!4) More live releases -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10)
4a) Digital only (1-10)
8-I’m still a cd girl..
4b) Prefer cd (1-10)
10-if joining the fan club would get me a special release of LW songs this would greatly increase the value of an LW fan club in my mind.5) What cities have we missed?
Thankfully my cities have usually been included in her tours (originally Edmonton then Vancouver BC and now back to Edmonton AB) Please make sure to keep Edmonton on your list as there are A LOT of LW fans here. I know the last show was in such a small venue a lot of my friends missed out on the opportunity. And even though LW plays folk fests In Alberta from time to time – we’ll still come out and see her during the year at theatre venues (Jubilee and Winspear etc…) because folk fest sets are usually short and only a glimpse of a true LW show…6) And last but not least, what did I miss?–consider this the suggestion box.
Hmm, I can’t think of what you missed. I love LW’s quirky charm on stage and she always seeming knows what she WANTS to play. I remember the first time I saw her in ’92 she was a little grumpy at the crowd who kept requesting off her previous albums and she had played a couple of those but ultimately wanted to play the new stuff. That is the thing about LW – she’s never had a bad album so whatever she wants to play – well that’s what should be played. And always wanting my favorite songs to be on the set list is a little part of what will keep me coming back every time. That, and the simple fact that her music is one of the better things I’ve come across in my life…
trobertsParticipantSince seeing Lucinda earlier this month two nights in a row and absolutely loving it – I’ve been checking this forum more often because I enjoy hearing what everyone has to say. I don’t know anyone who loves LW as much as I do so it’s awesome to share stories and opinions on here with others who have the same passion for LW’s music.
This particular thread bothered me though because although I believe a forum is an open place for everyone to share opinions – I don’t feel sharing opinions about LW’s possible habits is appropriate. Anyone who may or may not know anything about LW as a person – in my opinion – has no right airing her dirty laundry. When is it ever ok to share this kind of info about other people? LW is just trying to get along in a world like the rest of us. It always amazes me that she can even get up there and do what she does – night after night – and do it so beautifully. Each of us has gifts, demons, strengths, quirks – all of which are integral parts of who we are. We make choices in our own lives to go on whatever path we think is best for us. No one can make these choices for us.
Pitbull, I respect your honesty about your life and wish you continued success with your endeavors. However, any judgement on LW’s lifestyle is unfair and unfounded. I don’t care how many times you’ve seen her back stage – you don’t really know the ins and outs of the life she lives. And more importantly it’s none of our business and I believe shouldn’t be up for discussion on here. Your original post was disappointment with her show and that’s cool – I agree with philty – there is no right or wrong opinion about whether LW is better now or before. It will always be a subjective conversation to which all opinions are welcome and necessary to make this forum work.
trobertsParticipant65 Galaxie – the Edmonton show (well actually St Albert show) was at the Arden Theatre in St Albert. And the set list was quite different – it started with a couple songs off her first album and ran chronologically through her albums with a song or two off of each along with a little story by Lucinda about where she was in life/career then…
There were maybe 5 or 6 songs in common but the show had a very different flow. LW was changing guitars every song or 2 it seemed and I kept thinking how much work that was. And the encore had 3 songs – but no Four Strong Winds. I can’t think right now what the third encore song was – but for some reason I think it might have been a cover. And the other two were Joy and Long Way to the Top…
trobertsParticipanttim and tntracy – you were both so right – the acoustic opener of SOTR happened last night in Calgary and made my night. I kind of forgot you guys said it might happen until I saw her and Doug all set up for acoustic and then it hit me. (sorry it got axed for your show tntracy – maybe next time – and there’s a good version of her singing it on youtube in case you don’t already know that)
November 12, 2008 at 1:56 am in reply to: Top 10 Rare Songs You Would Like To Hear Lu Play Live. #38141trobertsParticipantI Can’t Seem to Make it Through Sundays (is that the right title) on the re-release of the Rough Trade CD. I love that song and it would be such a treat to see it live – although second to Side of the Road in my mind.
trobertsParticipantI think last night was my 11th Lucinda show over the last 16 years and it might have been the best.
I agree with previous posts – the band (and Lu) seemed very relaxed. The set list was a great journey through Lu’s albuims and that venue is fabulous. I saw the Edmonton show on Sunday as well and as much as I looked forward to seeing a show in such a small venue (around 500 seats) a bigger theatre with great sound like Jack Singer really did make for a spectacular evening. I can’t imagine there’s a bad seat in there either. I think the Winspear might have been a better Edmonton choice… (I wasn’t lucky enough to see the show there a few years back with the Swifty’s but I continue to hear how good it was)
Anyway both shows were great – I felt very lucky to see that acoustic version of Side of the Road last night in Calgary. The Edmonton show was the choronological walk through all the albums – also a great selection of Lu’s music.
trobertsParticipantI don’t mind if she starts late or has a curfew that cuts her off early as long as she does her usual great show. What seems strange to me – if she knows in advance about the curfew – why does she seem so surprised at being cut off? Is she acting? Does she think she’ll just get to play a bit longer? I can’t imagine she likes abrupt endings. So when she’s suddenly told she’s done, and seems surprised, I personally would like to think of her as the genuine gal that I think she is…
trobertsParticipantyeah, thanks a lot for the link to this. this is my fave lucinda song and I’ve been lucky to see her do it once (maybe twice) but it’s never enough!!
trobertsParticipantwow – I’m jealous – you guys are lucky to get Side of the Road..
It’s funny because I usually think of Lucinda as pretty chatty at her shows – but I’m sure that she – like all of us has chattier days and not so chatty days. I’m sure her diva moment was a misunderstanding of some sort (especially in light of some of the posts on the forum). I’ve been lucky to see her 8 or more times and I always think of her as gracious and humble.
