TOverbyParticipant
She will almost definitely do a blues album someday, it is something she has been wanting to do for a long time–but it will not be this next record.
TOverbyParticipantThe latest update is that I thought I had a label/dist. deal done that would have had a spring release, but that has now fallen thru. We do still have some fine tuning to do with the remixing etc. We definitely want to get it right. I think spring will still happen, but I am trying to decide now how I want to put it out, whether we will end up doing it ourselves or going thru another label etc.
TOverbyParticipantI have not received it yet. Thanks for the reminder.
TOverbyParticipantWell it will be that very early hour of 11 AM in Atlanta.
TOverbyParticipantI will see if I can get Lu to put together a list of places to check out. When she played the HOB there in April, we had a great day walking around in the Quarter -and she was pointing a few a notable places etc.
We also found some a great folk art place where be bought some great pieces -my favorite being an oar that has a steamboat painted on the paddle and the words (and song title) “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans” –which I found extremely poignant, post Katrina. I will see if I can find the name of this place. This was also the day that we bought an antique ring that was supposed to be “The ring” and I even said to her –“okay are you want this to be That ring” -and of course the answer was yes. That lasted for all of about two months when she decided that it was no longer That ring, because she now wanted a diamond to be her best friend-so to speak.TOverbyParticipantOk-how’s this for a quick update–as i was typing the above post an email came in from Lost Highway, and they have indeed located a copy of this cd and it is on its way.
TOverbyParticipantWell I finally got a chance to play this version for Lucinda and unfortunately she wasn’t sure where it came from either but figured that it probably was a radio station recording. I mentioned KGSR and she said “it could be, but i’m not sure because I’ve done a lot of those”. Big help she is.
I have asked Lost Highway to see if they can come up with a copy that might be buried somewhere in their office, and they are going to look, and get back to me.TOverbyParticipantLucinda has been working on bits and pieces of songs that she is going to hunker down and finish. We have plans to begin some early pre-production soon after the first of the year, and the goal is to have a new record out by this time next year. She is really excited about getting to work on it, and we have been talking a lot about what direction it will take, but ultimately the songs will dictate where it goes, and I haven’t even seen any of them yet, with the exception of Port Arthur. She keeps them close until they are ready to be born.
TOverbyParticipantWell, her record label has recently mentioned doing a box set, but I think a new studio album will come first. She definitely doesn’t have the giant vault of unreleased studio recordings that Mr. Young or Mr. Dylan have- (based on the bootlegs that I have, he hasn’t even really scratched the surface yet) but what she has is worth hearing. I haven’t gone thru everything yet so I think there are still some discoveries to be made.
I should add however that there are tons of live recordings from her entire career, going back before Ramblin’ –in fact today I just found a whole box of cassette tapes of mostly live recordings in her equipment storage space. Also found a big box of press and photos -some of which looked to have been taken during the Car Wheels sessions.TOverbyParticipantYes -it was legit promo item from Lost Highway
TOverbyParticipantInteresting -I’ve been going thru her “archives” and have found some interesting things but I haven’t come across one of these, so I don’t think Lucinda even has this.
TOverbyParticipantGreat to see this again-as it all got a little crazy that night. She had started to write it last week but then decided it wasn’t going to be ready, but at rehearsal there was a miscommunication about what the 3rd Janis song she wanted to do was going to be and the band was not prepared for the song that she wanted to do. At that point started to work on the new one again and she was literally writing it in the dressing room right up until it was time to go onstage. She only let me in to hear it for the first time five minutes before going to the stage, and wanted to know if I thought she should do it–yes definitely–so she very quickly had to rewrite the lyrics on to one page because she had them on different scraps of paper. In fact she didn’t have to time to write out all the verses so she left one verse out. By this time the stage manager is standing outside the dressing room getting a little nervous. While still a work in progress–there will be at least two verses and the title has been changed to Port Arthur — I thought it sounded great and was really glad she got it done given that Janis’s brother and sister were there and I know they really appreciated it-as did the people from the RRHOF.
TOverbyParticipantWell this is a bit of a mystery -however I have not played it for Lucinda yet and I’m sure she will know. I did ask her about it, but she couldn’t really say without hearing. It is definitely not from the Lu and Doug tour because while we record everything, those show all remain in the hard drive. Also Doug did not play any acoustic guitar on that tour and that is not Lu playing the part on this recording.
TNT surmised that it might be a demo, although he was unaware that any existed. Well they actaully do exist, as I recently discovered them. It is in the form of the entire album being played by just Lucinda and Bo Ramsey over a couple days in a Gnashville studio. It is pretty great. There is a version of Blue in those recordings but it definitely is not the version heard on the You Tube video. So right now the mystery remains. When we return from Cleveland I am going to have her listen to it–I have a feeling it might have been done for TV show or something like that.TOverbyParticipantThere will be no shows in the US for the immediate future. The additional anniversary shows that were possibly going to happen in Feb. on the west coast will not be happening. Lucinda is very excited about moving on to the next record and really wants to hunker down and finish all the songs that she has started.
The goal is to have a new record out by this time next year, but we’ll see what happens.
There may be shows in the second part of the year, possibly in Europe, but that is extremely tenative at this point.Given that several of the songs on West and Little Honey were written at the smae time and the fact Lucinda has played probably 250+ shows over the last three years the end of the this years tour marks the end of a chapter. I think 2010 is the beginning of the next one and it is a good time to recharge the batteries and write some new songs and make a great new record. As I said above Lucinda has bits and pieces of several new songs that she has been starting over the last couple of years and she is very excited to be able to catch and sit down and finish the next batch of songs. She has been telling me for the last couple of months. As she put it “I can feel it- I can feel when they are ready to come out. I just need a chance to sit down and let them all come out”. I’m not going to stand in the way of that.TOverbyParticipantI dated an insensitive manatee once. But the insensitivity just did not allow for a healthy relationship so I had to break it off.
