Yes, the performer gets the same guarantee for the free shows as any other. The difference is that everything is covered by the sponsoring party –the bank, brewery or park and rec board, instead of ticket revenue. Usually these are great shows to play because 1) you are pretty much guaranteed a big audience and 2) the promoter is more relaxed because he has no risk–his percentage is also guaranteed up front so he does not have to worry about ticket sales to make his money back.
TOverbyParticipantTNT– Thanks for helping spend more money- just what I need 😮
TOverbyParticipantMore than likely it was attempted to be crossed out on the day of the show by someone at the venue who works with the promoter or the promoter if he was on site. It was probably “negotiated” back in by the tour mgr.
TOverbyParticipantLooks legit to me but I believe that one is quite old -as we now have 13 people. It’s also another part of the business that has been affected–that is a pretty modest rider for 10 people and ours is probably even less now. Some promoters are cool about the rider, given that the $$ limits are set up front in the contract, and some still really nickel and dime day of show-even with contract. I’m glad the tour mgr has to deal with that
TOverbyParticipantHere comes the Math Police: actually it’s only 25% -but that’s still way high
TOverbyParticipantYes -I (and Lu, of course) definitely want to thank everyone for all the support and well wishes before and after the Grammys- and also in regards to the new songs and calls to the local DJ-always appreciated.
Now in regards to this weekend, -not completely sure what you’re referring to, but it was -and always is a crazy week as there are special events every night leading up to the actual show. I could almost write a whole book about the Neil Young show day/night as it was a bit of a rollercoaster to say the least, so i’ll try to give a few highlights. These things always end up a bit of a fustercluck- as in getting a driver who gets lost on the way to the show (we found out later that several did)–but in the end it was great. At rehearsals on Thurs prior to the show it was just Emmylou and Lu going thru it with the house band because Patty wasn’t getting to town until that night, so that meant they had to find a time to go thru the song with all three of them on the day of the show. It worked out as they ended up working on it backstage about 45 minutes before they went on–(I actually do have a so-so IPhone picture of this that I will see if TT can post, as I haven’t figured it out yet) –in addition Emmylou came down with some type of throat problem so she asked Lu to sing the main melody and verses instead of the harmony they had tried the day before. As one review of the show noted the next day, Lu is just a natural fit to sing Neil and I thought she and Emmylou and Patty sounded just great. I watched backstage with good friend Andy York (Mr. Mellencamp’s guitar player) on the giant screen they had set up for all of the artist to be able to watch–but for some reason it reversed what you were actually seeing on the stage -which meant Emmylou was suddenly a lefthanded guitar player etc. That was a bit strange. The backstage area was basically the rock n roll HOF and after she came off it was quite the who’s who that searched her out and wanted to meet her and say hello. It’s always great to see how respected she is among her peers -especially on this night–and how she is always surprised and humbled by that. After a few minutes of pressing the flesh she was very hungry and ready to go and she wanted go by a friends b-day party – after much consternation we ditched the driver we had earlier and got a ride to the bar where the party was at- with Lu’s requisite luggage in tow ( I can laugh about it now)- only to get there and find out that they didn’t have food. Not good. But down the street was a late night taqueria and we had some of the best damn $1 tacos you could ever have. It was quite a juxtaposition from where we had just come from 15 minutes earlier. But the fun was not quite over-upon going back to the bar we found out that they had run out of red wine 😮 . I’ve never seen Lu move faster than when she flagged down that taxi. 😀
TOverbyParticipantThis is the kind of information that I find very valuable. There will be much to be considered the next time Lucinda hits the road. There is no way to avoid TM/LN in many cities -in other cities there are regional/local options. Because of the assumption that this merger will cause price increases I can already see where this is going to put more pressure on the artist and managers to make adjustments so that going to a show is still a reasonable proposition to the fans. There are always things that are taken into consideration when budgeting a tour but now things are only going be much more challenging:
1) I think it will put much more onus on the artist to find ways to keep prices down, and
2) Also looking for new ways to get tickets into the hands of fans -so they don’t have to pay 25-50% in fees or try and hustle tickets on the street the day of the show because the reality of that is obviously only a small percentage of fans will do that.
3) It certainly may affect the places you play, because there are too many cities where all of the venues will be LN/TM venues, so there is no way to completely get around them.
4) It will increase the challenge to still be able to put on the show you want to put on with the best band and sound etc. Obviously to keep ticket prices down you have to keep overhead down. Someone like Lucinda would never ever compromise having a great band and great sound and never will. So will something else have to be sacrificed? I hope not. I do know that our budgets were tight this past year in trying to keep prices down. Before last years tour we looked at adding a lighting person and small lights setup but it was just too expensive so we didn’t. In the end a small sacrifice but an example of things that have to be considered.
I can say that we will do everything we can to make going to a Lucinda show an affordable and first rate show. We will find a way.
I do still want to start a fan club or some function that allows for pre-sale tickets to get into the hands of the core fans first. That is something we will do on the next tour.
As always I welcome ideas or things that you see other artists doing that we can do to make sure the experience of going to a show is still a great one. Fortunately we have some time, as Lucinda won’t be going out until the end of the year at the earliest so bring them on.TOverbyParticipantI noticed one that you are missing. She did a duet with friend Susan Marshall on the Beatles song Don’t Let Me Down. The album called Little Red was released last year -on her own small Memphis based label, I believe.
TOverbyParticipantWhat 3 don’t you have?
TOverbyParticipantEven though the ACL website says that those are the only 3 appearances I recall Lu saying there was one more additional appearance.
TOverbyParticipantLJ–As far as I know there hasn’t been an offer, and while they haven’t posted dates yet, she will probably be tied up finishing the new record.
TOverbyParticipantJust had to find the right man for the job.
TOverbyParticipantOriginally we were going to do about 3 weeks of the Anniversary shows on the west coast, but Lucinda really wanted to move on working on songs for the next record and given the tour schedule that she’s had the last 3 yrs it was hard to argue with her. At this time we have no shows scheduled and given the lead times it takes to book shows I would say that the earliest that we would even be looking at potential shows would be Jul/Aug, but at this point that I wouldn’t bet on that happening.
I can say however that, as it has been with her more often than not, the songs come in bunches and it looks like she is in that place right now as she has finished 3 songs in the last two days. While they are new born babies so to speak -in the form of raw acoustic version- I can tell you that she is a proud mother and I am very excited as well with the early promise of these babies.
TOverbyParticipantI believe the song plays in the background in one of the scenes -I think a bar scene, and yes it is definitely on the soundtrack.
TOverbyParticipantFYI–I tried to post the pictures of the actual notes here in the forum for future reference of anyone else going to NO but the files proved to be too big and couldn’t be compressed enough to put up. I have webmasta working on it but it has proved to be a real challenge.
