David –Yes -you are correct in regards to Jack Shit -Lucinda sang with them once a few years ago and we recently went a saw them again and Lucinda was blown away by Val’s playing, What he does with JS is only one side of his playing -he is a terrific player and Lucinda is jazzed about having him on the new record. (I think you would appreciate his great collection-i’ve only seen a few of them but i’ve heard about it).

Greg Leisz of course appeared on Sweet Old World and usually sits in on pedal steel when Lu plays in LA.
While a lot of people think of him as a pedal steel player his first instrument his guitar and he is a fantastic rhythm guitar player. The bonus here is that he and Val have played a lot together and they love playing together -should be a great combination.

Just for the record, it was not my intention to tease anyone. At times there is only so much I can say about certain things that are being discussed and the hint that I mentioned was meant only in fun. I also couldn’t divulge the name because it was/is not a complete certainty that appearance will happen-although it very probable that it will.
I also was not just trying to throw anyone “a bone”. I provided almost all of the info that I was able to at that time-with the exception of the tour which I intended to do in a separate update, but unfortunately it took me a few days to get back here and do that part. I very much appreciate every ones interest and support of Lucinda in here and am happy to provide any information that I can. To be honest I haven’t been in here providing info as much as I would like to but am going to try and be better about that. I can specifically say that I very much appreciated the suggestions about updating the website, which was very much already on the priority to-do list, but the feedback I got helped light that fire a little more, and Mr. Webmasta are all over it. In his day job he has access to some cutting edge technologies and we are continually discussing how to best put them to use. This website is very important to me and I want get it to where it is one of the best artist websites around. In that spirit please continue with the suggestions/ideas or things you may have seen on other websites that would make this one better.
Also always feel free to keep the questions coming and hopefully I will have the answers. I have thought about having a separate thread topic for Q&A so if anyone has any feedback on that idea please let me know.

Well- I guess the main news would be that Chet Lyster And Eric Schermerhorn are no longer in the band. Chet has returned to the Eels and Eric was getting a lot of studio work here in LA (and has a couple of young kids) so he didn’t really want to tour for the time being.
Val -who is going to play on the record may also do the August shows, but as of this moment that remains to be seen. If Val is not able to go out we have a few of names in mind.
Butch and David are still very much in the band.

David -At the time I did the initial update I provided most of the info I knew –since then a few more things have been confirmed and I can now better answer your questions. As I mentioned in the KLYK thread we just confirmed the dates at Capitol Records Studio B a couple of days ago, and we will begin on June 1 and have schedule that will have us finishing sometime around the last week of June. We had some great per-production meetings this week with Lucinda, the band and Mr. Liljestrand-we were able to have great discussions about all the songs regarding approach, sound, instruments etc.
Anyway here the answers to your questions:
    1) For the recording of the basic tracks the musicians will be the following:
    Val McCallum -Guitar
    Greg Leisz -Rhythm Guitar
    David Sutton -Bass
Butch Norton-Drums and microwave hot dogs
    2) We have to wait until the basic track takes shape before we decide who or what else is needed to finish the track, so it is early to say for sure who else might appear. but we do have a short list of names for other people we are thinking about for some of the songs- both additional musicians and singers etc.
    3) I think I answered this in the tour update thread.

OK David-thank you for posting the link –here is some no nonsense skinny and I really hope it helps with your attitude problem.
The reason the track wasn’t linked here is 1) It is on a soundtrack on another label and their marketing team markets the record as they see fit. Maybe you noticed that it is an EW exclusive, and I think that answers your question. 2) I didn’t know about it and neither did Lost Highway because it is not their record. More often than not professional courtesy is given and the mktg team that is quarterbacking the project will work with the artists labels and managers as part of their mktg plan. They obviously chose not to do that in this case. Though i’m not real happy about it, this is what happens when mktg depts at labels get trimmed down to one guy and an intern.
The thing that does really piss me off however is the headline which says that the sdtk contains new music from Elvis Costello when it does not (and repeats the same mistake in the story). It contains Elvis singing a harmony part on a new Lucinda song. While I would of course like Lucinda to get the headline, it is not my choice, but I would still like it to be accurate—the way it reads now is a slap in the face to Lucinda and all of the other artists that appear on the soundtrack. I know Elvis would not be happy to see his name used in this way– he didn’t even want to mess with the track (as noted elsewhere) but the sdtk people wanted a Lu/Elvis duet and they paid for it so that is what it had to be. We did retain the rights to put it on Lu’s next record, which we may do but with a different version.
The players on the song are as follows:
    Val McCallum -Guitar
    DJ Bonebrake -Vibes
    David Sutton -Bass
    Butch Norton- Drums
The cello part was overdubbed by Nathan Barr who does all the scoring for True Blood show. Also of note is that is the same DJ Bonebrake who has been the drummer in the longtime LA band X, but also as it turns out is a classically trained vibist, and it was great to watch him play. The track was recorded the famous Capitol Records studio B where some of the greatest records in American history have been recorded (Sinatra, Nat King Cole etc.) In fact Lucinda loved the studio so much that it is where she will be recording her next record starting June 1.
Oh yeah I do have a couple pics from this session I will see if I can post them or I will send them to TT and have him post them.

    Here are the lyrics:

    Kiss Like Your Kiss

There will never be a spring so perfect again
We’ll never see a yellow so rich
The grass will never be quite as green
There will never be a kiss like your kiss

There will never be a summer so complete
We’ll never see a palette like this
The berries will never taste as sweet
There will never be a kiss like your kiss

There will never be an autumn so vivid and warm
So rare, so gold and so crisp
We’ll never see it colored in aubergine
There will never be a kiss like your kiss

There will never be a winter quite so true
When the sky is painted with gifts
There will never be a moon so full and blue
There will never be a kiss like your kiss

No she has never played that song, on World Cafe or otherwise. The only cover of that song that I’m aware of is Johnny Cash who did both that song and Johnny 99, also from Bruce’s Nebraska album, on one of his last records for Columbia Records. I’m sure others have done it on Bruce tribute records, but Lu never has.

All well and good. However this thread was a discussion about Live Nation/Ticektmaster and not about David Byrne and how much you love him. But since you’re here:

“Wow, I am always amazed by the amount of energy and shock that are reflected whenever individuals talk about Ticketmaster fees, et al. As if something can be done in face of millions of dollars and acres of corruption. As if”.
SO LET ME +MAKE SURE I HAVE THIS RIGHT- WHAT YOU’RE SAYING IS– DAMN WE CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT TICKETMASTER SO LET’S DISCUSS HOW IF YOU COULD, YOU’D HAVE DAVID BYRNE’S BABY.

“let’s take a look at the model David Byrne has been working on for the past several years”.
    OK-LET’S TAKE A LOOK

“He does things himself and uses his website as his sales and communication vehicle and tool”
WHAT ARTIST DOESN’T USE HIS WEBSITE AS A COMMUNICATION VEHICLE AND TOOL?

“He and Segmeister won a Grammy this year for packaging”
CONGRATULATIONS TO HIM –HE OBVIOUSLY DID A GREAT JOB OF HIRING SEGMEISTER THE DESIGNER.

“While others point to the obvious (the looming demise of corporate radio and CD commercialism/retail) David Byrne continues to simply take action by doing it”.
DOING WHAT EXACTLY? BILLING A BOOK TOUR AS A CONCERT AND THEN CHARGING $30 FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR HIM TALK FOR 15 MINUTES ABOUT BICYCLING AROUND THE GREAT CITIES OF THE WORLD?AND THEN HE STOOD BY AND HAD TWO OTHER PEOPLE PRESENT A SLIDE SHOW FOR THE NEXT HOUR AND A HALF. COULDN’T EVEN DO THAT HIMSELF. HOW ARTSY -MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE LUCINDA DO A SLIDE SHOW ABOUT WALKING AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

“A philanthropist, artist, ally, activist, writer, and musician he gets it and gets it done”
HE ALSO PROMISED A ONE-ON-ONE Q & A SESSION AT THE END OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED “SHOW”, BUT THE OTHER TWO PEOPLE TOOK SO LONG THAT HE TOLD THE AUDIENCE HE DIDN’T HAVE TIME FOR IT AND LEFT -HOW PHILANTHROPIC OF HIM
AND IF YOU WANT TO READ ABOUT HOW MISLEADING HIS FANS TOUGHT THIS “SHOW” WAS YOU CAN CLICK ON THE LINK ON HIS WEBSITE AND IT TAKES YOU TO TICKETMASTER.COM WHERE YOU CAN SEE HOW THRILLED HIS ALLIES/FANS WERE THAT THEY SHOWED FOR MUSIC AND GOT A SLIDE SHOW. REMINDS OF THE TIME MANY YEARS AGO WHEN HE PLAYED ON A SHOW AT THE GUTHRIE THEATER IN MPLS WITH PHILIP GLASS AND THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO. AS THE HEADLINER HE CAME OUT AND PLAYED TWO WOOD STICKS FOR 15 MINUTES AND LEFT. NOT KIDDING.

“we all seem to satisfied to sit on the side lines and complain about the massiveness of the machine as the stadiums and arenas continue to fill their seats with musical “acts” and sporting “events”
    AND SLIDE SHOWS

“Stop making sense, David, Stop Making Sense”
FUNNY -YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH

“Link here for his latest movie trailer and more –> http://www.rideriseroar.com/”
GO DAVID! GO BYRNE! GO DAVID BYRNE! RA RA RA
DO YOU GO ON HIS SITE AND PROMOTE LUCINDA? OH, WAIT I FORGOT HE DOESN’T HAVE A FAN FORUM. I GUESS HE’S TO BE BUSY BEING A PHILANTHROPIST, ARTIST, ALLY, ACTIVIST, WRITER, AND MUSICIAN (FUNNY HOW YOU LISTED MUSICIAN LAST) TO LISTEN TO HIS FANS.
APPARENTLY HE’S ALSO HIRED YOU TO USE OTHER ARTISTS WEBSITES AS COMMUNICATION VEHICLES TOOLS. I HOPE HE’S PAYING YOU WELL.

AS I MENTIONED AT THE TOP -THIS TOPIC WAS ABOUT TICKETMASTER AND LIVE NATION AND UNLESS I MISREAD I DON’T SEE ANYWHERE ABOVE WHERE YOU MENTION HOW DAVID BYRNE ADDRESSED THE TM/LN ISSUE. DID I MISS THAT. SO IF YOU DON’T MIND, I WILL BRING THIS BACK ON TOPIC BY REMINDING YOU THAT IT WAS LUCINDA, WITH THE MERCH CREDIT TO OFFSET THE TM FEES, WHO IS STILL THE ONLY ARTIST I KNOW OF TO EVEN MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO ADDRESS THE EGREGIOUS BEHAVIOR OF TM/LN (AND YES I REMEMBER PEARL JAM). SHE ALSO HAD THE BALLS TO ISSUE A NATIONAL PRESS RELEASE TO SAY SHE WAS DOING IT. BUT WE DIDN’T REALLY THINK TM/LN WOULD GET PISSED, BECAUSE AFTER ALL, IT WAS COMING OUT OF HER OWN POCKET. AND WHILE IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MUCH (WHICH WE STATED IN THE PRESS RELEASE), I THINK THAT ACTION ALONE WAS FAR MORE “DOING IT” THAN ANYTHING YOU CREDITED DAVID BYRNE WITH.

I HOPE YOU DON’T TAKE ANY OF THIS PERSONAL BUT IT JUST KINDA ANNOYS ME WHEN YOU HIJACK A THREAD JUST TO TELL US ALL HOW MUCH BIG LOVE YOU HAVE FOR DAVID BYRNE. ESPECIALLY WHEN, IN THE PAST YOU’VE COME IN HERE AND ACCUSED LUCINDA’S FAN’S OF BEING CHEERLEADERS. SHEESH, PUT YOUR DB POM POM’S DOWN AND LOOK IN THE MIRROR.
OH YEAH, FOR THE RECORD, I AM A DAVID BYRNE FAN.

Tony– I can only speak for Lucinda and the answer is yes we do. I know the question has also been raised here if there is anything that can be done and if the companies in question listen. The short answer is not much and no. They are large and very powerful companies that have been allowed to go to the very edge of questionable practices-and in cases that Tom showed, far over the edge. Unfortunately nobody is going to tell them what to do without some type regulatory reform, and with the recent merger being allowed to go thru many saw it as a missed opportunity to take a closer look at what is happening in the ticketing/live music industry. To much disappointment that did not happen and now will probably not be even looked at again for a long time. Obviously the thing they look at is ticket sales, and obviously as an artist mgr you can’t tell people to stop buying tickets, because that isn’t going to work out too well for the artists is it?

We will continue to look for ways to make what should be a simple process of buying a ticket and going to a show a non-headache. I am always looking at what other methods other artists are using and trying to see if there is anything we can implement. Hopefully when we go back out we can address some of the issues, because it is something that we really care about –but too often our hands are tied behind our back. But we will continue to try.

LJW–Here is something else to think about. Many of these show in that price range and above are not selling out-not saying this one will or won’t, but in many cases they aren’t. What has been happening is that ticket prices are greatly reduced in the last week or so before the show, and you can get them for pennies on the dollar. It’s not always very publicized when they do this, for many reasons, but it has been happening a lot in recent times.
Also you might want to reach out Pieta’s mgmt and find out if she is going to do her own tour this year. Many times these opening slots pop up unexpectedly and they end up being in addition to, or being used to try and set up their own tour to follow. Her own tour would already be booked or in the works because you have to start working on these things 4 months in advance just reserve the dates -especially heading toward the summer when activity is higher.
Hope this helps with your decision.

Yes I think so -just not sure when- I actually wanted to try and get both Car Wheels and Essence issued on vinyl last year as part of the 30th Anniversary rollout, but it just didn’t work out. I have a call tomorrow with Universal to talk about this and other topics regarding Lucinda’s catalog.

Yes -but given the current burst of creativity, it won’t be this next record, and when it does happen it wouldn’t necessarily be a covers in the way other have done them . Actually there are several different ideas for records that she has, and that really speaks to where she is at right now in regards to recording. She feels so confident about her voice and her singing right now, as well as the band and engineer, that she really wants to get it all down.

Lucinda won’t be skipping Seattle –the last time she was there was in Nov 08 and it was right after the economy had crashed and everything came to a grinding halt. Regardless, both nights at the Showbox were completely sold out and the audiences were great. Ironically, because we chose to do 2 nights in Seattle it was Portland who got skipped on the Little Honey tour. That was a difficult decision because it has always been a great city for Lucinda.
