Actually the only one that was originally coming in June was Essence but it wasn’t going to be remastered for vinyl, which you really have to do, so I delayed it. The ones that have already come out on vinyl at one point have been mastered for vinyl so those may come first.

With the two split set nights in Charlotte and Fargo we did purposely split the sets into the first set of the mellower stuff and second set being the rockier stuff. The split set thing was requested by the venue in Charlotte so we decided to try doing it that way and we liked it so when Fargo wanted to do the same thing we fine tuned it and did it again. There is a lot of things that go into the setlists and we are constantly tinkering with them, and there is quite a bit of thought that goes into them -some nights more than others.

I thought both night in Chicago were great but there was something very special on Sun. night. It was the first time I’ve ever gone to our front of house and asked him to make me a copy of the recording as soon as he could. The band was great but her singing was just fantastic -like a jazz musician being in complete control of their instrument. Her tone, her vibrato and her emotion -the sound in the room–everything was just dead on. She said to me after the show that on Where Is My Love she felt like Billie Holliday. Considering this came after a run of 25 shows in about 30 days it was just incredible. I’m very anxious to hear the rough cd of the show but it won’t be for a while as this was the last show of the leg and i probably won’t get it until we get back out.
Oh yeah also- the version of Angel was not on the setlist that night -it was suggested by Mr. Sutton before she went back out, so it was just completely decided on the spot–the a capella ending was completely spontaneous and was something I had never seen her do before. Great stuff.

It wasn’t -and since Blake didn’t divulge anything I’m not going to either and we’ll all have to see if it pops up on the next leg as a surprise.

Ok here’s mine. Back when the Rough Trade record first came out I was working in an indie record store in Mpls and beyond all the promos we used to get at the store I was also buying tons of records (this was before cds) and I thought the RT record looked interesting (a Howling Wolf cover -wow) so I opened up a copy and put it on the store turntable and listened to Side 1 and was very impressed. Flipped it over and played Side 2 and continued to be very into it, but the moment came with the last track -I Asked For Water (He Gave Me Gasoline) and being very picky about blues I was just completely blown away that this young white girl was not only just nailing this very obscure Howlin’ Wolf track, but also that she even had the guts to try it. I went to see her and Gurf at the 7th St Entry room of First Ave a few weeks later-I think her first show in Mpls–and she blew away a lot of people that night. In any event I will never forget that day in the record store.

Parker -Glad to hear you are ok–I was watching the footage on the bus on the ride back home and was hoping that you and BigDunc and all of our Okla friends were safe and sound.
It’s all been a little crazy–we left Chicago Sun night and we went thru the Joplin right after it happened and drove to Tulsa – then we left Okla. in time to beat the tornados there. We’ve been dodging some bullets this year -our tally is now 3 blizzards, 3 tornado fronts, a hail storm, a couple of thunderstorms and playing on grounds that were under the Mississippi River a week later. Just got back to LA and feeling lucky but very saddened by what has happened in the midwest and south this spring.

Actually the Mayor was on the bus talking to Lu when they introduced him, because one of his people came in and told him that he had been introduced. But wasn’t leaving before he got a chance to talk to Lu, who was just finishing getting ready in the back of the bus. He said had been talking with the president in the afternoon and he told him that he was going to see Lucinda that night and he very matter of factly said the president told him that Unsuffer Me, was his favorite song anf to tell her to play it (there was a little confusion about the title and I have a feeling he might have meant Righteously, but we’ll never know–so for the record it will be Unsuffer Me).
Unsuffer Me was indeed on the setlist. All I can say that the Mayor is a HUGE fan, and the fact that he and the president were talking about her that afternoon really blew Lu’s mind.

As this was “A Night With” , the venue chose to have this be a split set like we did in Charlotte. In the end it was a very solid show with Lu being talkative and the band playing great. There was a great moment in the intro to Kiss Like Your Kiss–before the show a man gave Eric The Tour Mgr a $20 bill with a post it note attached to. The note asked Lu to please dedicate a song to his wife and him who were celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary. Lu put the twenty and and the note in her pocket and when she got to KLYK she explained the song andsaid “I’d like to dedicate this to Leonard & Emily (not real names) who are here tonight celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary…” and then a short pause and with a comedian’s precise timing she said “And thank you for the twenty bucks”. She got a good laugh on that one.
Overall It was a great crowd -with a rather unfortunate exception -and I will be as diplomatic as I can with this but it became obvious rather quickly that we were suffering from what is sometimes known as the Gold Circle Syndrome. GCS is what happens when theatres, most often in smaller markets, have long time donors or contributors which earns them the right to sit in all the prime seats. Unfortunately they are also sigificantly older and not alwyas knowing what kind of show they are about to see. I wouldn’t bother to even mention this but last night was an extremely bad case of GCS, and it became more and more disconcerting once we hit the more rocking side of the set and most of the people right in front of Lucinda had their arms crossed and couldn’t summon the energy for a polite clap. Anyway, before I put my fot in my mouth, I think the best way to summarize it is to say that when we finished the encore with Joy and walked Lu off the stage, the entire place erupted with standing ovation -with the exception of the first few rows in front of Lu. Enough said but it was one of the stranger things i’ve seen in a while.
    Here’s the setlist:

Side Of The Road (Lu & Blake)
    Jackson
    Ventura

    2nd set

    I Lost It
    Drunken Angel

    Those Three Days
    Out Of Touch
    Bleeding Fingers
    Righteously

Hmmm…somehow a post that I put in here a couple of days ago disappeared. We got the offer for the two military base shows which Lu was proud to do so we quickly added three show after the 7/25 show to get us down to those shows. The three that have been added are Richmond, Raleigh and Macon. I am presently not sure if the military base show are open to the public as I don’t think they are but will verify. Also, there is no connection to military base shows and the show in Orange County on Aug. 13th, which will most likely be a one off.

Oh yeah -of course I forgot the whole point of the post above. Just wanted to make it clear, Stoger, that Lu is not espousing devil worship. The lyrics that you quoted are:

    Don’t let the devil ride
Don’t let him ride with you
Don’t let him take your hand

    A rather subtle difference I think 😮

The song Don’t Let The Devil Ride is one of those songs from gospel/blues history that has many many different versions that are variations on a basic theme and as a result many different writers take credit for it’s origin. The one that Lucinda heard is written by Ike Gordon and is on disc 3 of a 3 cd gospel/blues compilation called Fire in My Bones: Raw Rare + Otherworldly African-American Gospel (1944-2007). In fact there two versions on this record–on disc 1 the Mississippi NIghtingales do a song called Don’t Let Him Ride.
Lu been completely enamored with disc 3 of this set -the next track after DLTDR is called Holy Rock, the song she has been assimilating into Get Right With God. She was playing this cd for Erika the other night after the Austin show and she really loved it also.
For anyone who has an interest in this kind of thing there is a book called Stag O Lee Shot Billy that very thoroughly, and mildly academically, traces the origin of the song many now know as Stagger Lee. The author, whose name escapes me, traces the incident of how a man named Stag O Lee shot Billy Lyon in a bar room fight and it seems to go back to turn of the century St. Louis. Over the years many different versions appeared with new verses and the story evolving in each one. The song has really become legendary American folk lore and a great example of how a song travelled thru the south with each different bluesman putting his own stamp on it. A highly recommended read.

I saw the post on FB that Tim mentioned above and wanted to copy it here:

We were all disappointed with the weather conditions, we actually had the same thing happen the last time at Crossroads but it blew over much quicker. There are always difficult decisions to be made on nights like this. Number one of course is safety. We waited to start the show when it looked like the weather was abating and we went on still planning to do the entire show. After she played Lake Charles solo it seemed like the weather might be starting to change for the worse we asked her to skip 3 songs -two slow ballads and a longer jammy type of song. We thought it best to move forward to the more rockier songs of the second half of the set. Honestly that is probably what she was most upset about -she didn’t want to shortchange the fans. We simply made the decision with the best intentions for everyone involved. She later skipped Those Three Days and Little Rock Star partly because they had not been played in a couple of years and they were just rehearsed for the frst time earlier that day. That made for a total of 5 songs skipped and no other song was cut short. I should also add that because we had no opening act we had planned for a longer set overall so we thought we had some room to cut a couple without expecting that she would get thrown off by doing so. For the encore we put a group of songs on the list and then decide which ones to go with when she comes off. Blessed was on the list but it was decided to do the new blues song because she had never played it before and she wanted to try and do something a little special for the great fans who were still there. I’m sorry you were disappointed -we never want anyone walking away from a Lu show feeling that way. As I said above we made the decisions we made with the best of intentions and I hope in the end we at least salvaged a difficult night. Thanks for your support and for sticking it out-we love KC and hopefully we can be back soon.

Yes -it is a co-bill with Lucinda closing the shows. Both artists will play equal full sets.
