Oh yeah -meant to add that you heard it here first. 🥁⏳👍
TOverbyParticipantWell here’s the bad news first -as far as we know all the European shows are not happening this year. Now the good news -there are plans afoot to be in Europe three times next year -while still tentative with details still being worked out, the plan is to fly over the ocean in January, June and August. We have our fingers crossed.
TOverbyParticipantWe are still hoping to get them back out by the end of the year. Remastered is actually a bit of a misnomer as they were never really fully mastered – so now they will actually be mastered
TOverbyParticipantAlso meant to get in here and post the song lists but I now see that they are here. It was a fantastic couple of nights. The first night Lu did Which Will and Bus To Baton Rouge at the request of Jonathan Wilson and both sounded great with Benmont on keys. Mike Campbell and Jim Keltner joined in on a very spirited version of Joy. I see there are videos now of most of Lu’s songs.Lu doing These Days with Jackson was a pretty spine tingling moment. Even in soundcheck/rehearsals that afternoon everyone just stopped in their tracks when they were working on it. I overheard Jackson tell Lu how amazing it was for him to hear her voice sing that song. She was so honored and touched by that I thought she was going to faint. An unforgettable moment among many that weekend.
TOverbyParticipantI spoke too soon–just got the production schedule and I was deluded in hoping for April -that’s not gonna happen.
TOverbyParticipantWe are trying to make early April for the release of the new record but that is far from a sure thing -just a goal. With so much recorded we have many decisions to make in regards of how to release it–to say nothing about all of the mixing etc.
Laurel– Yes the new songs you heard are being recorded and most of them, if not all of them, will appear on a new recording.
Stoger–Can’t really put out song titles yet- many of them only have working titles right now so just not ready to list them yet.
TOverbyParticipantDavey F. is bassist Davey Faragher from Elvis Costello’s backing band the Impostor’s –it’s up there in my original post.
TOverbyParticipantWell let me see if I can help fill in the blanks to LWJ’s post above -and I do have to give you credit for some very perceptive sleuthing. We aren’t sure how we’re going to split the songs up but it very well could be close to what you have above.
The recordings with Bill Frisell were done with Greg Leisz, David Sutton & Butch Norton and I believe there are 14 tracks done with this group. The last night of that weeks session substituted Santa Davis on drums and included Ras Michael on jamaican hand drums.
There are two tracks recorded with the legendary Tony Joe White on guitar (and harmonica on one song) the band on those tracks are Pete Thomas on drums (from Elvis Costello’s bands -the current Impostors and the original Attractions-and Jack Shit), Sebastian Steinberg on bass (from Soul Coughing) and Greg Leisz.
Recorded that same week four more songs with Greg Leisz and Pete Thomas and Val McCallum (Jackson Browne and Jack Shit) on guitar and Bob Glaub on bass on two songs (check out the amazing records he has played on) and this will answer your question from above, Davey Faragher on bass for two songs (from Elvis Costello’s Impostors and Jack Shit).
This week we have been recording with Ian “call me Mac” McLagan (The Faces -and Small Faces, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart etc) Stuart Mathis (Wallflowers & Lu’s current touring guitarist) and Greg L, Pete T, and Davey F. We have one more night of recording with this line up tonight and it looks like we will end up with 8 or 9 more songs.
I am always hesitant to gush about recordings here in the forum for several reasons: 1) what else would I say? 2) don’t want to over hype 3) we still have a ways to go with mixing etc so the release is still a ways away -shooting to hit early April for the first record.
I can say this -this is the fourth record i’ve been involved with with Lu and none of the other recording sessions have been like these. There has been an incredible energy and spirit and everyone involved truly believes they are working on something very special. I can also add that we are making this record in a way that nobody does anymore. It is being done almost completely live in the studio- each song is done over live in it’s entirety until we get the magic take. Lu has become obsessed with being able to say that each song was recorded live meaning that what you hear on the record will be intact as it was recorded. She has given to the fact that she want’s some backing vocals on some songs, but those will most likely be 90% of any overdubs. What that has created is a massive amount recording -we have multiple versions of every song as it is being worked on -in some cases very different versions of the same song, we have long versions (one 19 minute song that is so beyond description we aren’t sure what we’re going to do with it), we have solo versions etc and a couple songs have been done with both of the different groups. We have everything -the range of songs is incredible-as a whole it would be a pretty amazing artistic statement.
Ok -there is the update i’ve been meaning to post for the last few weeks – I’ve probably said more a lot than I intended but I’ll blame it on the adrenaline of this past week -and month.
I will say one more thing.
We still aren’t quite done yet -we have about four more songs to record after today. So much for that recording budget.TOverbyParticipantI found something also -even though it was missing from the setlist section elsewhere on this site. Ah yes brings back fond memories when most of the setlists would end up looking like this:
[attachment=0:37z5h4o2]CBsetlist.jpeg[/attachment:37z5h4o2]TOverbyParticipantStoger is correct on the location. Here’s a little more background of what was a very eventful night-it was 8/1/2007. I have never forgotten the date because it was the day that bridge fell over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis during late afternoon rush hour and being from there, as was our tour mgr, I spent a couple of hours calling family and friends making sure everyone was ok.
On the tour front we had just made our way to Council Bluffs from the northeast -two weeks of steamy hot mostly outdoor shows. Lucinda had been asking for fans onstage the whole time but hadn’t said much to me about it-she was mostly asking the tour mgr and her guitar tech and for reason still unknown they were not complying to her demands. There was some talk that we were recording all of these shows and the fans would be able to heard on the recordings -that was the only reason/excuse I heard. That night in Council was another sweltering night -we were watching the skies because it looked like a classic midwestern storm was about to blow in, but it held off long enough for Lucinda to take the stage with huge black rainclouds hovering overhead. Not long before the show Chet Lyster had called our then tour mgr and said he was tour managing Smoosh a pair of young sisters who had recently opened some shows-he wanted to know if it was ok to come by the show with the girls and hang out. With Chet and Smoosh standing in the wings Lucinda started the show and was visibly unhappy instantly -I was standing onstage almost straight behind her to the left and she turned and yelled something to me but I couldn’t hear what she said but didn’t really need to -I knew the look. I think she played one more song – and then the meltdown happened -almost literally. There was a pause- of course she couldn’t just step away and yell at someone off mike -no she had to turn directly in to the mike and say “Who do I have to f*ck to get a fan out here?” I have never seen two stage hands -one on each side move so quickly-and suddenly there were fans everywhere. Having been on the road with Lucinda for only a month I remember thinking that life was going to be a lot more interesting than I had ever imagined.
Now cooled down, literally and figuratively she recovered and finished the show with guns blazing. During the encore we asked Chet to sit in -I think it was Are You Down and Joy –and was very impressed with the way he and Doug played together. It was basically that night that Chet was asked to join the band -which he did almost instantly.
Ironically I went back to look at the setlist for this show but it one of the only ones missing -I also looked to see if there was a thread in the forum about this show but strangely there wasn’t so much as a word written. With this kind of night it’s just meant to be that way.TOverbyParticipantThis year is pretty much over when it comes to shows-with the exception of the Pappy & Harriets 10th Anniversary show and the KCSN radio benefit on 11/2 & 3.
I m working on next year and just yesterday officially confirmed the first US show for early June so it can be assumed that shows will be built around that show. Right now we are working on the record and many other things. I have been meaning to get in here and give a little update and hope to do so soon. Just a lot going on.TOverbyParticipantLuke- We are looking into Australia for next year. The last couple times we have over in April and played shows around the Byron Bay Blues fest. The only problem with that is that’s what everyone does and as Byron has grown it means more people touring over there at the same time. We may still do that but we are looking into other options so we can come over when there’s not so many others all there at the same time.
TOverbyParticipantWe are hustling like crazy to make a 11/12 or 11/19 release date -the regular version, which was remastered last Sat night, will include a bonus live show from May of 89. The deluxe version will include a special package and third disc, which should include the 86 CBS demos -we just have to figure out all the credits, like who is actually playing on them etc.
Going thru all the things from this era had been an interesting search. We do have a ton of live recordings form the 80’s and 90’s including most of the above but probably not all-and most of them are on cassette-although the owner of McCabes has said he is storing all of the original recordings of all her shows there. Digging thru all these things has only reinforced the idea of a Lu “bootleg series” and I already have ideas for the first 3 or 4 volumes. But first the RT reissue and then the new record(s). Now that we have control of the releases on our own label I think we will have a timely and steady schedule of new and old.TOverbyParticipantYes -Paul is correct -about half of the tickets are set aside for the general public.
TOverbyParticipantI can now confirm the final show of Sept. will be Sun. 9/22, the closing night of the Americana Music Awards fest in Nashville at the music club 3rd & Lindsley–she will be playing the Rough Trade record beginning to end to start the show.
Also, the show will be broadcast live but am still getting the rest of those details. Then it’s time to get home and get some recording done.
