Buffalo is at the Town Ballroom.
TOverbyParticipantDidn’t know Kasey was doing HWB, looking forward to hearing it, she’s great. And what do you know, there’s that Paul Kelly guy again. Loved her comments about him and Lu.
TOverbyParticipantRoanoke 10/25 presale announcement just went up on FB. Starts tomorrow morning and password if BLESSED.
Buffalo 11/6 coming next.
Just a few more dates to announce.TOverbyParticipantA very special night. Although he has never been able to make big inroads in this country, which is still a mystery to me, he is a master songwriter with an incredible catalog of songs as these two nights prove. I always hate comparisons like “he is the (fill in artist) of (fill in country)”, but in the case it is unavoidable because he is of that stature -it would be easy to say that he is the Australian Bob Dylan, but his songs also bring to mind Bruce, Elvis C, Neil and Lucinda. I was actually struck last night listening to the songs at how similar he is to Lucinda in regards to the literate storytelling and the descriptions of location within the stories-the natural ease of all the different musical styles -then throw in a subtle but powerful mastery of emotion and you’ve pretty much got it. I have been a fan of his for years and, although she knew of him, Lu wasn’t really familiar with the records and had never seen him live. At one point early on she turned to me and said simply “he’s a fucking poet”-a few songs later she was in tears and as the last song was ending she said “I’m humbled”. That pretty much sums it up. While I have seen her effusive about other non-singer songwriter artists, I have never heard her say what she said last night about another current singer-songwriter. And this was only songs A-L. Incredible.
PS-It looks like he is going to get another push in the US as they are putting a 2cd Best Of and an 8 cd box called the A-Z recordings in October (as well as a biography). I was also told last night they will be reissuing a lot of his records over here after the first of the year. He had three completely brilliant records on A&M Records in the 80’s that I hope will be included in the reissues–Gossip (1986), Under The Sun (1987) and So Much Water So Close To Home (1989).
(LWJ- He is coming to Toronto -obviously I would highly recommend it)TOverbyParticipantNot sure of an exact date -but they are trying to make this year.
TOverbyParticipantThey will happen–just finishing up working on the shows for the first two weeks of Nov. and getting them locked in and announced etc.
TOverbyParticipantLefty –Funny that you mention that as those were her favorite lines in the song, and a big reason why she really loved the song. On the other hand she wasn’t as crazy with the lines about “ridin in buggy with Miss Mary Jane, Miss Mary Jane’s got a house in Baltimore”. She was wondering what that had to do with the rest of the song and thought he probably just put it in there because it rhymed. She was trying to decide if she could skip them, but knew that it’s Bob and she couldn’t really do that. It was funny to watch her wrestle with it.
We actually found a lot of lyrical discrepancies from the recorded versions to what’s listed on bobdylan.com, which I thought was kind of odd.TOverbyParticipantIt looks like the presale tickets for Black Mtn/Pisgah have just gone on sale -here is the link where to get all the info: http://wildsouth.org/index.php/events/485-benefit-concert
TOverbyParticipantIt is done. What a monumental task. I thought Lu was going to implode. After two weeks of nearly non-stop Bob listening and a constant whittling down of the list– with many great suggestions coming in here and on FB — it went from 25 to 12 and then down to about the six finalists, which kept changing also-but in the end it got down to:
Everything Is Broken
Tryin’ To Get To Heaven
It’s Alright Ma, I’m Only Bleeding
North Country Blues
Tears Of Rage
Ain’t Talkin’
And finally on the day we went to the studio it was basically down to the first two on the above list. The idea was that we would run thru both of them with the band, and see if one of them clicked but the first one they tried really started to come together fast so the second one never got a chance.
And the winner is….
Tryin’ To Get To HeavenThanks for all the great suggestions -it was very interesting to see what came up and many that did got into the last 10-15.
Now on to the McCartney project-but that’s a separate thread.TOverbyParticipantYes, Charleston, SC just added for 10/16 and there will be something on the 17th or 18th also. We’ve been trying to get Savannah but i’m not sure what the latest is on that.
TOverbyParticipantYes-me too -the complete set is 5 cd’s and 102 songs (with some repeated versions of several songs). I was fortunate to find a set a few years ago in NYC, and I just now pulled them out again.
I was really into collecting Dylan bootlegs for a period of time -mostly studio stuff-and I can say that there is still a ton of unreleased studio Bob. I have at least three of four amazingly packaged 4cd sets of high quality studio stuff that, from what I recall, is still mostly unreleased. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find them for some time, which is really a drag but i’m still hoping they’ll turn up. There’s also an 11 LP set called Ten Of Swords, comprising of recordings from 62-66. Some of this has been also -the Royal Albert Hall show was included in this as were the Minnesota Hotel Tapes which were Bob’s first recordings in 1962.
TOS was famous for being so well packaged etc that it looked like a legit release and Columbia records brought the FBI and really got zealous about getting it off the streets. It disappeared very quickly.TOverbyParticipantSpeaking of the Basement Tapes, I just dugout my vinyl of the “complete” Basement Tapes –gonna find a Bob song that’s never been released before-that’d be interesting.
TOverbyParticipantWe just confirmed that we will be recording this a week from today in Bob Clearmountain’s studio and he’s getting back into town in time to be the engineer on the track. Bob is one of the true world class engineers— who of course did such a great job mixing Blessed. Lu is very excited. Now if we just could just decide on a track -we’re going to be listening to a lot of Bob over the next couple of days.
And I haven’t even mentioned the McCartney project yet. Busy busy.TOverbyParticipantActually–I just found out that SF wants the public sale to start on 9/11 so the presale will probably be the 8th or the 9th.
TOverbyParticipantWow -crazy and interesting day- completely unexpected love for the Lu/Tom Russell duet on Hard Rain -didn’t know anything about the USA Today pick of the week -also Classic Rock magazine (?) and the Globe & Mail newspaper pick of the week.
Also put up this same Dylan question on Facebook this afternoon and between the main wall page and the evvents page we have gotten over 500 responses and still counting. Pretty unbelievable response. Maybe she’ll have to do a songs of Bob Dylan album now.
