Last night’s show is hard to describe in the usual terms. Here are some one word descriptions: crowded, loud, raucous, celebratory, and magical. Here is a 3 word description of me right now: dragging my ass.

I arrived late as usual to what is my favorite LA venue I think, despite the fact that at least half the time I have to stand for 2 hours in a crowded room. But the place has a lot of history and charm and it has stood the test of time as a performance space. Grumpymama commandeered a plush bench seat in the balcony in a reserved section but I was bounced out of there unceremoniously when I tried to join her. No seating for you! We can’t all be Grumpymama. I encountered Paul From Los Angeles in the enclosed bar room upstairs with seating but no view of the stage so I staggered down the stairs and took up residence way over to the side of the stage where I later encounted Cindy of FF fame. DDinNJ made the scene. We had the place surrounded.

Lu made a grand entrance after the band had started the opening number. Lu treated the show like a homecoming and the crowd responded accordingly. I think the LA crowd are Lu’s most fervent and long lasting fans; I would say that since I live here but no offense to her great fans across the world. But last night the Troubadour was ground zero.

Without going into detail on each song and a couple of technical moments I was pleased to hear When I Look at the World, which has become my favorite song on the new record, even more than Foolishness. The latter song received an even more evangelical reading as Lu made it clear at the outro that she was not suffering fools gladly. Being a fool, I hid until the song was over.

Doug joined for 2 songs and he and Stuart wailed like crazy from opposite ends of the stage. Lucinda was beaming and the crowd went into another level of delerium. Now they know how I feel. Rockin in The Free World brought what was to me the longest Lu show in memory to a close while Lu led the crowd in fist pumping.

I think all of these things happened but I’m not sure since I got home at 1:30 am and woke up at 5:30 so my brain is more scrambled than usual. My “no shows on weeknights rule” took a torpedo right in the engine room.

Great to see the FF members out in full force, representing the internet as best we can. Also great to see Doug, Matt Blake, Peggy French and Robert, and T.O. and band. Rock on with your bad selves.

From Tom:There have been a lot of really great shows on this run and this one was right there with the best of them. we even had the second fight (at least visible from the stage) of the tour. We changed up the setlist again and with the choices Lu made we ended up with 6 songs from World Without Tears, 3 of which made their tour debuts. Great version of Those Three Days with Lu on electric -I think we need do that one more. Another excellent version of Foolishness with Lu doing even more improvised “proselytyzing” than the night before. 5 total tour song debuts brings the count up to 66 different songs so far on this leg.
And I don’t want to fail to mention a big fantastic packed house. Thank you San Diego for always being one of the best (and favorite) places Lu plays.

Great report Stoger. No surprise you found Sara Petite in the house. It was a good night for music in So Cal last night: Lu in San Diego, Steve Poltz at the Belly Up, and Anne McCue at the Hotel Cafe. 😀

    From T.O.:
First time back in Tucson for a few years and Lu was fighting off a little bug. She was worried about her voice but after a little cough in Drunken Angel it opened up and she didn’t have any other problems. She chose Hickory Wind which was a bit of a surprise as it was the first time it was even put in the set as an option. Great version of Foolishness -everyone thought it was the best live version of that song so far. All in all another great night and great audience- really good to be back in Tucson again.
As mentioned above, Hickory Wind was the only tour song debut—someone did point out that Magnolia had been played in Vancouver so the tour song count is now 61.

Great show. Lu in good spirits and looked and sounded great. Packed house. I was in the first row of the balcony with Stoger and my school pal and his wife and our vantage point was excellent. The first hour of the show was pensive. The high energy kicked in halfway through Are You Down when the band jammed extensively while Lu stood off to the side; each musician went mental. Protection was next and Lu and the band were in full rock mode. Unsuffer Me was nasty and Stuart wailed loudly with distortion. Hot Blood provided some comic relief with Lu smiling at the end of each verse.

I will await Stogers penetrating and illuminating analysis. My school pal Mark and his wife enjoyed the show muchly and are already discussing seeing Lu again.

It was awesome as always to see Stoger and SamishSeaMike the road warrior and was very pleased to meet DDinNJ and her party. While the band and crew motor to San Diego I will fly home I hope, in an hour or so and rest up before heading off to see the fabulous Anne McCue in Hollywood tonight. I will return to the Lu tour Monday at the Troubadour.

Much thanks to the band and crew for putting up with us as always.

A college pal of mine went to the Santa Fe show. It was his first LW show and he gave me a postive review of Lu and her band. His main musical influences are Iggy Pop and The Ramones so the fact that he liked the show is high praise.

    No setlist of course.

    From T.O :
Well we made it on two fronts -couldn’y leave BC until 7am when the ferry opened and then had a delay at the border crossing -because we were apparently the first tour bus to ever cross there and they had no idea what to do. Very odd. We didn’t even get to Spokane until 6pm or so. We also made it in regards to the fact that, counting the radio show in Seattle this meant 7 days of shows in a row. Everyone is ready for a day off-but only after an 11 hour drive to Salt Lake -who schedule this tour anyway? Some rookie. After much debate over which “Valentine” song to start the show with, Lu made a show time call to go with Steal Your Love. Copenhagen was dedicated to the events of the day in Denmark with Lu simply saying “when will it stop?”
Another sold show making 7 in a row. 4 tour song debuts brining that count to 53.

    A few words from someone:
Well they called it a hall but Alix Goolden Hall was a church -complete with pews etc. Very beautiful live room sound which created some extra work for our ace sound guys Mark Humphreys and Cory Store and they had it sounding immaculate. Because of the liveness of the room the band played dynamically a little pulled back.
As a result his may have been one Lucinda’s most beautiful vocal nights -you could hear every single nuance in her voice. Amazing. Another great sold out crowd which makes 6 in a row and Spokane will make 7. 3 more song tour debuts makes the count at 49.

    From Tom:
From Probably the best audience we’ve ever had in Vancouver. Especially once they knew it was ok to get up and dance. Wonderful version of Greenville in it’s tour debut-one of two tour debuts which brings this tour’s song count to 46. Here we go on the island in Victoria

Im about to head up to the central coast for wine and golf, in that order. If I should receive the setlist I will post it although I may need a free online converter program to change pdf to jpg.

    P.S. Oh and it’s 80 degrees out. 😆
