Excellent report Mr. S.
tonygKeymasterFrom Tom:
Lu was thrilled to be back with her band/crew family for these last four shows of a long and rollercoaster 2016. She hasn’t played this room with the band before so there was a little bit of a feeling it all out at the beginning -as she says in Can’t Close The Door, “a little rough around the edges” but not in a bad a way, because the vibe in the room was really great and that carried everything. You could kind of sense that there was an energy that was waiting to be lit, so to speak—you could really begin to feel that on a great version of Those Three Days. That was where things started to jell. We’ve been talking about pulling out a few lesser played songs for these 4 shows and last night it was The Knowing which she has been wanting to get back into the rotation for a long time. We all feel it’s one her great overlooked songs. She loves singing it and she really dug in on it. Some guy yelled “this song sucks” in a quiet middle section of Dust, I don’t think Lu heard him but the band might’ve because they really tore into the outro and from there it was off to the races. There were a lot of smiles backstage after the show -everyone was just really happy that “the band was back together”.
tonygKeymasterBeen no indication of that Zendog13. It was a great show at Royce Hall.

Yes, please. 8)
* Also- There are standards??
Perhaps “minimum requirements” would be a better description.
tonygKeymasterThank you. I am trying my best to meet the high standards you have set for reporting.
My next Lu shows will be at The Troubadour in January. 😀
tonygKeymasterSorry for the delay in posting my remarks sports fans. Last night’s show was part of the Lobero Theatre’s jazz series. Charles Lloyd was joined by Greg Leisz on pedal steel, Bill Frisell on electric guitar, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. They played about 6 or 7 groovy jazz tunes, all instrumentals, starting with a very sleepy Leonard Cohen number. Eventually they picked up the pace and did a nice version of the Beach Boy’s In My Room. If you are familiar with Bill Frisell’s music you can imagine what it sounded like. Each song allowed a band member to cut loose at some point.
Lu joined after 45 minutes or so and we had our first vocals of the night. All of Lu’s songs were done with a jazz arrangement, with Greg and Bill’s parts reminiscent of their performances on the record. Since the band was focusing on performance and not volume, Lu was able to sing without straining and the result was pleasing. Lu commented that thing’s sounded so good that she was tempted to take the band on the road.
Lu returns to the Lobero on January 17. It is Santa Barbara’s oldest still in use theater and holds about 600 people.
tonygKeymasterI plan to arrive stylishly by automobile. I will report on the goings on as necessary.
tonygKeymasterThe Charles Lloyd show in Santa Barbara is Monday, November 28, not Monday as that FB post suggests.
P.s. I have taken said train many times from my burg to SB. It’s quite awesome.
tonygKeymasterThanks! Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lu!
