tntracyParticipantLafayette, I think you’d really like Daniel Martin Moore. I thought he was extremely talented – and he has a wonderful singing voice. For his last song (a traditional bluegrass tune whose name escapes me), he & the fellow accompanying him on piano & drums (not at the same time! 😆 ) went acoustic.
The crowd was being really rude in the back during his entire set, talking & yakking up a storm, while those of us up front (w/ the exception of two clueless young college chicks), were respectfully listening (I was actually enthralled). Daniel said he wanted to perform the last song totally acoustic, and unplugged his acoustic guitar. Then, glancing at the back of the room at the idiots talking & not paying attention, he looked at us up front & asked, “In fact, do y’all mind if we step down there?” Of course, we agreed, so we rearranged ourselves, leaving a open semi-cicle for the two of them to stand just in front of the 18″ high stage. Daniel played his guitar & sang, while the fellow with him provided some rousing old-time “clap & stomp” percussion. It was awesome.
Yeah, & check out JLM some more if so compeled – but, don’t feel pressured to like her – I know you prefer the guy singer / songwriters for the most part – like I prefer the gals… 😉

tntracyParticipantOh, and I meant to mention earlier – thanks to West Words, I found out that Jessica & her band played week before last at SXSW, and 10 songs from their set were released as a SXSW iTunes Live exclusive. Here is a link for those interested…

tntracyParticipantWell, I received Jessica Lea Mayfield’s two CDs early Friday afternoon as planned, and gave them both a complete listen. I enjoyed them VERY much, which had me looking forward to Saturday night’s show at The Earl even more so. After listening to her albums, I did some more research on her online. She is from Kent, OH (NE of Akron), and is the “protege” of Dan Auerbach, who is the guitarist for The Black Keys, a blues / rock band from Akron (he plays lead guitar on her first album & produced both).
And, Saturday’s night’s show did not disappoint. Jessica and the band (I don’t recall the name of her electric bassist or drummer, but on lead guitar was Richie Kirkpatrick – from Nashville “by way of Murfreesboro” according to some info I found on the Web about him & who also played lead guitar on her second album) put on a great show. They played a relatively short set of 14 songs after two opening acts (I didn’t catch the name of the first opener – he was not listed on the tickets – but the second opener was a singer / songwriter from Kentucky named Daniel Martin Moore who was very good) which was enthusiastically received by the relatively small crowd (80 people or so). Jessica sung with “an achingly slow, sexy drawl that conveys vulnerability and intestinal fortitude”, as one reviewer of her latest CD, Tell Me, puts it, and her between-song patter from the stage was equally low-key and beguiling. I purchased her EP White Lies (containing 6 of her earliest songs from 2006) from the merch table and had her sign it after the show.
I am hooked. I look forward to seeing this talented young artist again (hopefully soon).

P.S. LWJ, she had the same guitar strap she was sporting on the Letterman show… 😉

Hey Hot_Blooded ( Rudy ), if you still don’t have “Ugly Truth” version 2
He’s got it already – I sent it to him after checking w/ TO… 😉
Tom
tntracyParticipantIt would be awesome. It would be cool, too, if she could record a full-length version (assuming one exists – it is just the short opening theme to the show that she is singing, correct?) & release it on iTunes or something…
Tom
tntracyParticipantWell, according to the Adult Swim press release, it was either the “fourth or fifth season, depending on how you slice it”. And, according to this article at No Depression, it was the fifth season. Both state it was the final episode of the season.
Here is the clip for your viewing & listening pleasure… 😉

tntracyParticipantI really liked that, LWJ – thanks for posting. I am looking forward to her show even more so now (as well as my pre-show cheeseburger & shoe-string fries)…
Tom
tntracyParticipantI received Western Ballad today from Amazon (uncharacteristically one day late) & am listening to it now. I’m up to only the fourth track, but like it very much already. I love her voice…
