Cool! That’s good to hear, TO – but, it was only “work” in the sense that it was a “labor of love” for Lu & her music… πŸ˜‰

I LOVE the idea of fusing local acts as an opener. It’s an old school way of booking and one that’s a win win as far as I’m concerned. The potential to bring the opener’s fans into the fray and the opening act gets bragging rights as opening for a national treasure.

    I’m with you, Lafayette… πŸ˜‰

I am moving this thread to the “Shows” forum where it probably better belongs.

No worries, Blake, just some obsessive-compulsive housekeeping that we moderators do from time to time… πŸ˜†

Surely, by “just”, you don’t mean you posted this brief message from your car moments after crossing the bridge, do you stoger? If so, that must mean you’ve joined the ranks of the “smartphone totin'” set! πŸ˜‰

On a related note, there’s a brief mention here at indystar.com of tonight’s show at The Vogue (although I certainly wouldn’t classify Lu as “Pop Music”…)

Hi, WriteDude – welcome to the forum! I live in North Georgia myself, and will be attending the show at the Cobb Energy Centre next week (as well as the shows in Charlotte, NC & Knoxville, TN).

In regards to your question, Lu doesn’t have a static “song list” when she tours. She is well-known for mixing it up from night to night, which is great for those of us who like to travel when we can to see multiple shows. While there are a few songs that she plays most nights, the majority of her selections will vary.

For an idea of what she has been playing as of late (again, be sure & look at several different shows!), you can see her recent setlists here at setlist.fm.

Here’s an article from the Douglas County Sentinel about Gurf’s “Blaze Foley tour” that also mentions Blaze’s Georgia connection (he lived in Carroll County in the mid-1970’s – Carroll County is due west of Atlanta, on the Georgia / Alabama line; Douglas County is just east of Carroll County).

I’m really looking forward to the film screening & Gurf’s performance tomorrow night at Smith’s Olde Bar…

P.S. I highly recommend you go see Linda McRae, LWJ – I think you’ll really enjoy it. If you chat with her after the show, tell her “Tom from Eddie’s Attic” says, “Hi’… πŸ˜‰

If it is indeed a trend, I think it’s a good idea. Not only does it change things up a bit for those who travel to see multiple shows, but it also injects some local flavor & talent to the show itself. Not to mention a good opportunity for out-of-towners to discover new (to them) music…

WOW! Well, it seems I won’t be missing this screening of Blaze Foley: Duct Tape Messiah & Gurf’s performance of Blaze’s songs from Blaze Foley’s 113th Wet Dream after all. It will just be delayed until next Friday night, and it will be here in Atlanta! This all thanks to an incredible coincidence that occurred last night at the Caroline Herring show at Eddie’s Attic.

Opening the show for Caroline was a wonderful roots & alt-country performer from Vancouver, BC (eh, Canada LWJ!) who now lives in Nashville by the name of Linda McRae. She played a wonderful opening set, the first half with her playing the banjo & singing, the second half acoustic guitar and singing. She sang some delightful original material, much of it with a humorous edge.

In introducing one of her songs, she mentioned “an old friend”, Gurf Morlix! At the mention of his name, I clapped a couple of times – the only person in the audience of about 100 people to do so – which she acknowledged with a smile & nod of her head. She said she first met Gurf in 1989 at the Vacouver Folk Festival, and they had been friends ever since and he was, in fact, currently staying with her & her husband at their home.

After her set & before Caroline took stage, I introduced myself to Linda as “the lone clapper”, and explained to her that while I did not know Gurf personally, I was very aware of him due to my being a “huge fan” of Lucinda Williams. And, I told her that I was sorry to be missing his show near Birmingham that same night w/ the screening of “Duct Tape Messiah”. Well, her husband was standing there, and they both, nearly in unison, told me that Gurf was going to be doing the same gig next week in Atlanta at Smith’s Olde Bar! They were not sure of the actual date, and, after looking it up once I got home, it turns out it is next Friday night, and I immediately bought tickets.

It is amazing how the “connecting the dots” continues, often in surprising ways!

We saw Caroline Herring at Eddie’s Attic last night, and it was truly a magical evening at “The Attic”. Caroline was superb, as was the rest of her quartet (Charles Williams on guitar, Kris Dale on upright bass and Marla Feeney on violin and saxophone), who were quite the accomplished musicians (especially Maria Feeney whose violin playing blew me away; she also provided wonderfully harmonizing accompanying vocals to Caroline).

Caroline was charming & engaging from the stage, telling great stories and providing colorful background to most of the songs she played. She talked at length about a project she worked on in the UK related to Cecil Sharp’s recording (not audible recording, but by hand) old English-style folk songs in Appalachia in the 1910’s. And, she played three songs she & other musicians (all the rest were from the UK, except one other from Canada) recorded during this project.

She also played two songs from her special children’s concert setlist that she is performing in full for two matinee shows at Eddie’s Attic this morning & afternoon. I enjoyed them so much, that I came home last night, bought a ticket to the afternoon show at 1:00 PM, and am going back to Eddie’s to see it – without a child (except my inner one!) in tow! The shows are also CD release parties for The Little House Songs, her new album containing songs she wrote for this children’s concert series based on the classic children’s book of the same title by Virginia Lee Burton.

After the show, I chatted with Caroline & she signed a copy of her 2009 EP Silver Apples of the Moon that I purchased for only $5 at her merch table. When she asked me to whom to make the inscription out & I replied, “Tom, please”, she surprised me by replying, “Oh, are you Tom Tracy”! She actually remembered my name from a comment I had made a few days ago on her Facebook page in reply to a status update about last night’s show. In the comment, I said that I was really looking forward to the show – and she posted a comment in reply, “fantastic! See you there”. Little did I know that she’d remember my post as well as my name!

Finally, in the “connecting the dots” department, check out this incredible coincidence related to Caroline’s opening act, Linda McRae… πŸ˜‰
