Just got home at 3:15 AM after the show – only to let my dogs out in the backyard and have them kill a big ol’ possum. *sigh* At least, I think he’s dead – I just checked again, and he is still there. We’ll see in the morning whether or not he was “playin’ possum”… 😛

Aside from my chasing the dogs around the backyard at 3:15 in the morning, running interference for the possum, and trying not to wake the whole freakin’ neighborhood in the process, tonight was awesome. And, since I am now too riled up & sweaty to go to sleep, I might as well share some of it with y’all… 😉

First of all, tonight marked the reunion (finally) of, as we were once coined by bigsubi years ago, “The Four Horsemen:” stoger, West Words, Lafayette & yours truly. That alone made the evening monumental in my book – we were trying to remember the last time we were all together at a show, and we think it has been over 3 years; Lafayette promised to research it & find out for sure. At any rate, it was so, so wonderful to be standing side-by-side with all these dear friends front and center once again. You guys rock and are true compadres in every sense of the word…

I will leave the set list details to stoger, as I did not take notes. However, I can rattle off much of what Lu & The Boys played: They opened with “Can’t Let Go.” Also performed, in no particular order, were “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road”, “Drunken Angel”, “Crescent City”, “Something About What Happens When We Talk”, “Changed The Locks”, “2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten”, “Blessed”, and, despite the setlist listing 4 of the new songs as two pairs of alternates, Lu said from the stage that she wanted to play more of the new material for us, so they performed all four: “Foolishness”, “Nothing But The Truth”, “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, and “Burning Bridges” – I was thrilled to hear all three of my favorites (so far) of the new material.

Also performed, much to my joy and, completing my “Lu Week Trifecta,” was “Bus To Baton Rouge.” ❗ ❗ ❗ Also, “Essence”, “Joy”, “Cross To Bear” (nod to hometown favorites The Allman Bros. Band) and “Atonement” ❗ ❗ ❗ The encore consisted of “Magnolia” & “Get Right With God,” which was the show closer.

There were others – as I said, stoger will hopefully bail me out with the complete setlist, in proper order, in the AM.

The room sounded great, the crowd was enthusiastic and the band was smokin’. All in all, one of the better Lu performances I have been “Blessed” to witness, and a night I will never forget, possum and all… 😉

Hey Stog & RDM (and of course, Lafayette), glad to hear you’ll be at this show. I wish TNT could be convinced to drive north. I just landed in Asheville, and the hotel clerk informed me that it is Beerfest Weekend and that the streets will be packed with revelers. Sounds like anything could happen.

I wish I could as well, West Words but, truth be told, I’m kind of glad I’m not there – four nights in a row would do me in, I am afraid – I don’t know how the intrepid stoger does it. At any rate, my stamina (or lack thereof) aside, I have an early-morning (7:00 AM) commitment tomorrow to the rescue with which I volunteer, otherwise I probably would have hitched a ride with stoger. I seriously considered it, surprising you & Lafayette, until I remembered my aforementioned commitment… 😉

Have fun & stay safe, y’all…

And, yes, dr winston oboogie, those are indeed some incredible closing lines to a masterpiece of a song. Having grown up in the Deep South, and knowing full well that sense of longing for times & family members gone by (and who doesn’t – that’s part of the appeal of so many of Lu’s songs – the universal nature of the raw emotions in them), this song wrenches at my heart and soul as do “Blue” & “Side Of The Road”. All of them are simply beautiful…

As mentioned in my post last night in the ATL Show #1 thread, this, too, was a wonderful show. Lu *really* got into the crowd – it was even more enthusiastic than last night, and you could tell she was having a great time, especially during the Neil Young cover closer. My home town crowd did me right proud, y’all! 8)

I must note the incredible groove in the new song “Something Winked This Way Comes” – David’s bassline kicks butt in it. Great vibe to this song…

Just got home from the second Atlanta show after attending both – awesome, awesome shows. It had been 1-1/2 years since I had seen Lu perform live (a personal “worst” dry spell for me since I started following her 12 or so years ago), so I was desparate for a fix… 😮 😉

I am REALLY excited now about the new album after hearing 7 or 8 of the new songs the last two nights. Some real gems all, but my favorites (so far) are “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, “Burning Bridges” (both of these were played tonight – I will defer to stoger for the full set list in a separate thread, as I did not take notes and my memory sucks), and “Everything But The Truth”. “Magnolia”, a J.J. Cale cover, played last night, is also wonderful – beautiful song…

I need to go crash, but I would be remiss if I did not mention two personal “religious experiences” that I had the last two nights. Two of my absolute favorite Lu songs are “Side Of The Road” & “Blue”. Both songs really, really strike a deep, personal chord with me for reasons I will not go into here. Lu performed “Side Of The Road” last night, and “Blue” tonight. I am not ashamed to admit that my tears ran freely during both. It was incredibly special for me.

“Side Of The Road” in particular was especially magical last night. Like all shows these days, we had our fair share of “yakkers” during the performances (a major pet peeve of mine). But, last night, when Lu performed “Side Of The Road”, the house went DEAD silent – you could have heard a pin drop – for the entire song. It was almost surreal. Unfortunately, tonight, during “Blue”, I was not similarly blessed with a respectful, listening crowd near me, but the song still was amazing, as it always is when I hear it.

Now if I could just hear “Bus To Baton Rouge” in Macon, GA, Saturday night, I will have a trifecta!

Yeah, the “problem” is, Amy LaVere is playing the exact same venue two nights later, and I really, REALLY want to see her as well. Two roundtrips to Greenville in two days? At 2 hours, 15 minutes each way, that could be doable if I can get the requisite kitchen passes… 😉

Well, the little package from Lafayette arrived (THANK YOU again, Lafayette!) and, I must say, I was duly impressed. Nowhere Is Now Here is a mighty fine EP, mighty fine. Fine enough that, I sought out ways other than driving to Ohio to a show to acquire physical copies of her other three EPs, Fireside (2011), Yellow Moon (2011) & Black Cat (2010). Turns out, there are instructions on Angela’s Web site for doing so directly from her label (Vital Records). A few e-mails back and forth with a very nice person at Vital, a payment of $5 each plus exact postage, calculated based on my mailing address, and a PayPal transaction later (I threw in an extra $1 to more than cover the PayPal transaction fees incurred by the seller), and they were on the way. They arrived two days later (today), and I just retrieved them from the mailbox. I haven’t even listened to them or ripped them into iTunes yet, as I wanted to share my good fortune with others first.

I can tell you that, like Nowhere Is Now Here, all songs on all her other three EPs are written by Angela herself, so she is definitely abiding by the finest in singer-songwriter tradition… 😉

P.S. Angela and band are playing next month in Greenville, SC, at a dining establishment apparently known for it’s fine Southern cuisine. It is a mere 2 hour, 14 minute drive from my home (just a hop & a skip for fine fried chicken & biscuits, not to mention music), so I might just have a road trip in my future…
