Is it so hard to look past the lyric book and focus on the music and poetry?
Nope! 😀

tntracyParticipantDuring one of the LA shows (I wasn’t there, unfortunately, but have the CDs) she mentions the notebook between songs. She said something to the effect that she probably doesn’t need it, but it comforts her. She called it her “Linus blanket”. So, it sounds like it is more of a psychological thing than a real necessity – I see nothing wrong with that. I’ve seen her 10 times, she’s always had it, and never once did I find it a distraction. IMHO, if it makes her feel more secure, it means a better show for us, so it’s a good thing.

LA/NY Cds?
What is up for sale right now…does each cd include both sets for each night? and is the set list included with the cd?
ThanksNo, only the first set (when the album is played in its entirety) is on each CD.

tntracyParticipantAmy, your comments are awesome. Thank you for posting your thoughts.
As for the negative comments from others (in general) – I have never understood the motivation of people who go out of their way to post negative comments on a fan site. Why are they even here? This is obviously a site for fans of Lucinda’s music. Why personal need does someone fulfill in posting here if they so obviously do not like her or her music?

tntracyParticipantThree of my favorites that have already been mentioned are: “Ode To Billy Joe” (when she played it at the Birmingham show, she said it was one of the greatest songs ever written), “Positively 4th Street”, and “Cold, Cold Heart”.
One that I really love that I believe is a cover (I am not sure who wrote it) that hasn’t yet been mentioned is “Factory Blues”. It is a great rockin’ blues song…

(Did i misunderstand what she said in Pennsylvania? She made some comment on the frustration of the music business and the album being out of print. My apologies if I heard it wrong.)
If I am remembering correctly, she makes similar comments on the El Rey “Sweet Old World” CD, but it was about that album, not “Lucinda Williams”…

tntracyParticipantI haven’t heard of another re-release (there was one in 1998 on Koch Records that included 5 bonus tracks), but I sometimes see a copy pop up on eBay if you are looking for one. Some diligent Googling might find you a copy somewhere else as well, but it might be pricey…

tntracyParticipantI have met her at least 4 times that I can recall. After shows each time. Once in Atlanta at the Tabernacle downtown (August, 2003), once in Athens, GA at the Georgia Theater (March, 2004), once in Nashville at the Ryman (September, 2005), and most recently at the Ventura Theater in Ventura, CA (October, 2006).
Other shows I have been to we either did not hang around afterwards, or she was already on the bus & not feeling up to meeting fans. The latter is very understandable, really – some days I am sure she is too tired. Another time, again here in Atlanta (at the Botanical Gardens in August, 2005), she had family visiting from Alabama waiting on the bus for her after the show.
She is very kind and unassuming in person. I collect her gig posters, and each time I have met her she has always signed one or two for me. I’m usually a little star-struck, so I never know quite what to say, but that’s my problem… 😉 😀

Id just add from the male/female debate – actually, we’re not that different. I can lay on the bed and moan at the ceiling too.
OMG!! I fell out laughing at that! 😀 😀 😀

tntracyParticipantThanks for the heads up, Tim! We will definitely be watching that show…

tntracyParticipantOK, my pictures from the Birmingham show are up. Here are links:

I read somewhere that they played a bit of “Heartbreaker” (at a different show) during Joy . I’m not a big Led Zeppelin listener, so…
That’s it!! That’s definitely what it was!

Mary Colurso made out like the lyric binder is a new thing. I happen to disagree with her definition of “flaws” in Lucinda’s performance or in her stage attire. I don’t think people were distracted by her lyric binder, her outfit, or the 2 times she had to restart songs.
You’re right! Actually, all those things are vintage Lucinda. Every time I have seen her, she has the binder. She even refers to it on one of the LA show CDs as her “Linus blanket”. 😉
Attire? OMG, I thought she looked great. Of course, I’ve always been partially to ladies in jeans & t-shirts as opposed to an evening gown… 😀
And finally, the restarts are always part of her shows – that is one of the things that makes Lucinda so endearing. When ever she has one it makes me grin from ear to ear. She herself often admits she is an “obsessive-compulsive f-ing perfectionist”, and I give her tons of credit for restarting a song when she thnks it is not going just right as opposed to muddling through it. Besides, we get to hear more music that way…

Nashville might be fun for a south location too.
Yeah, that would be cool, too. More pricey for me personally (hotel & kennel stay for our dogs!), but more doable that LA or NY.
We took the “scenic route” back from Birmingham to Atlanta, via Little River Canyon in NE Alabama. While driving all day, we listened to all 5 CDs from the LA shows that I bought at the Birmingham show last night. They were fantastic! I am wanting the opportunity to attend similar shows even more now. The sound quality was very good, the band was the same as the show last night (w/ the addition of various guests) so they kicked major butt, and Lu was very engaging & talkative during all 5 shows, giving the “back story” on many of her songs.
One of my very favorite songs is “Bus To Baton Rogue” (it really brings back to me my childhood in the South, plus it is just a durn good song!). She did something special during this song on the “Essence” CD that just blew me away. I won’t spoil it for anyone who is still going to get the CDs, but it was amazing. When it came on in the car, we were just west of the AL / GA state line in some beautiful country which just made it all the more poignant…

During “Joy/Riders…” I thought I heard a few bars of “Mississippi Queen” – right before they broke into “Riders on the Storm”. Anyone else?
I heard something, too, but I was sure it was a Led Zeppelin riff, although I could not put my finger on the exact song. “The Ocean” maybe?
I was going to ask Doug about it after the show (assuming I had the opportunity to chat with him) but, as I stated before, Sarah & I were too wiped out to hang around.
Maybe “Inside Job” can shed some light on this one for us… 😉
Tom
tntracyParticipantDuring The Birmingham show last night, Lu offered a tantalizing hint that there may indeed be more of these 5 night stands. When talking about the LA shows, she responded to some shout-outs from the crowd of other cities (I admit, I was the one who said “Atlanta!” 😳 – I also heard “Birmingham!” 😀 ) with, “I know – one step at a time – the hardest part is finding a venue where we can play for 5 nights.” So, the possibility for more of these is definitely there… 😀
