First, welcome to all the new fans / forum members. Being a relative latecomer to Lu’s music myself (more on that below), I know the feelings you are experiencing. That initial feeling of being “blown away” by the power & intimacy of Lu’s music, coupled with those “where has she been all my life” & “I have been missing out big time” feelings… 😉
I may have told this story before in another thread here, but I’ll briefly repeat it for the new folks. Like I mentioned above, I am a relative “Lu late bloomer”. I did not discover her until after “World Without Tears” was released. While I have been a huge fan of female vocalists for years, as well as roots music, blues, rock, etc., some how Lu escaped my attention all those years. In the Spring of 2003, my wife (who shares much of my taste in music) & I were in a local Barnes & Noble shopping. As I often do, I wandered back into the music section to explore & look for new music using their listening stations. I came across “World Without Tears” and gave it a listen. I immediately knew I would like it, and bought a copy.
We had some other errands to run, so I put the CD in the car CD player, and was immediately blown away (I distinctly remember remarking to my wife Sarah how incredible what we were listening to was). I was amazed at the music & lyrics I was hearing – the breadth of musical styles, the intimacy of the lyrics, the large amount of emotion displayed with such an economy of words. I knew right away I had to have everything by this incredible musician I could get my hands on.
So, never being one to resist my impulses, when I got home, I got online & ordered the rest of her studio catalog. In the five years since, I have seen Lu live 10 times or more, travelled to California, Tennessee (twice), Alabama & Kentucky to see her, met her after shows on 4 or 5 occasions, met and spoken with many other dedicated (obssessed? 😆 ) fans before & after shows – some of whom are active on this forum – and even amassed a nice collection of her gig posters (20 or so – I’ve lost count! – and need to get them framed), many of which Lu has been gracious & kind enough to sign after shows. I have also purchased multiple copies of “Car Wheels…”, “World Without Tears”, and “West” just to get different bonus tracks on different editions (even the Japanese releases of “World Without Tears” & “West”!). So, obssessed? Yeah, maybe, but I know a great musician when I see / hear her, and I welcome all you new(er) fans to the party. It’s been a great ride for me so far, and I look forward to the years / albums / shows / meetings to come…

tntracyParticipantWell, I have tickets to the Atlanta show at the Botanical Gardens, and they are for Friday, July 25th. Ticketmaster.com has Lu in Atlanta on the same date (WITHOUT Mellencamp) as does pollstar.com. Ticketmaster & Pollstar also show Mellencamp playing that same night in Oklahoma City, but without Lu.
BUT, the show list here at lucindawilliams.com shows her playing both Atlanta & Oklahoma City that same night! Must be a mistake, unless something has changed (which I dearly hope is not the case).
Tom
EDIT: Just did a little more research – the Atlanta Botanical Garden Web site, like Ticketmaster’s, still shows Lu’s show as July 25th. Hope you have tickets, though – bot show it being sold out…

Do you know the password for the Atlanta presale taking place April 25. Thanks
Yes, please!

tntracyParticipantWow – awesome news, Inside Job. Thanks for the info. I can’t wait until the new CD…

I’ve checked with the two PBS stations in Boston, and it is not scheduled to be shown! Major bummer. And they’ve always tried to portray themselves as one of the top PBS outlets in the country!
Next time they have a “Beg-a-thon” (i.e., pledge drive), call ’em up & tell them you’d have donated but they didn’t air the Lucinda ACL… 😉

I’m not sure what good a 7-year old license from Tennessee will do her. Maybe I’m naive, but could someone bent on identity theft have done something with that?
Depends. I don’t know about Tennessee, but here in Georgia, they actually used your Social Security number as your driver’s license number for many years. They stopped the practice a few years ago due to ID theft concerns.
Regardless, I know I wouldn’t want an old driver’s license of mine in someone else’s hands…

This and a few other bonus tracks are apparently available on the Australian import of the cd. Am betting you could find on ebay or Amazon.
Yup. The Australian import of WWT has “Hang Down Your Head”, “Cold, Cold Heart” & “Buick Blues” as bonus tracks. It’s $41.49 on Amazon.com, but if you click on the “More Buying Choices” link there, you’ll find it for a lot cheaper ($11.46 + $2.98 shipping to the U.S. for a new copy) in Amazon Marketplace shipped direct from Australia… 😉

tntracyParticipantSounds like an awesome show – I wish I could have been there!

tntracyParticipantHear, hear! I’ll second that! 😀

tntracyParticipantActually, she is Greg Brown’s daughter, not wife. And, Bo Ramsey co-produced her first album & produced her second album as well.
My wife and I are seeing her in a couple of weeks at a small club in Decatur, GA called Eddie’s Attic – we have a table reserved up front & I am really looking forward to it as I am a big fan of hers.

Lucinda’s shows are a lot like Dylan’s shows. When they are bad, they are really bad, but when they are good, they are GREAT.
Ditto. I have been to 10 shows over the last 3 – 4 years, and I can think of two or three that we “off” – the latest one for me was in Lexington, KY, (or so it seemed to me – I still had a great time, but you sense some “awardness” for lack of a better word). I’m a big enough fan that I just kind of shrug it off thinking that anyone I am going to see so often is bound to have a bad night or few (we are all human, after all), but I think I am a little more forgiving of her (due to my obsession w/ her music 😉 ) than others (not saying they are wrong for their feelings).
So, sis3306, I think you have just been unfortunate enough to be 0-2. And, concerning this show in particular, I am sure doing 5 shows in a row (with the added pressure of doing a new “format” for each – for not only Lu but also the band) then repeating it all on the other side of the country is tiring. Again, not making excuses or dispersions – just stating what are possible factors that may have served to lessen your luck this night, sis3306…

Do I understand correctly that these are available only as CDs and not digital downloads? I’m sure this question was answered somewhere, but I am new to the forum. Thanks!
You understand correctly – no downloads available at this time, nor have I heard any word that that will ever be an option. Having said that, there was one song inadvertently left off of one of the NY CDs that an “insider” (Inside Job) on this forum has said will be made available later. While he has not mentioned how, I imagine that one song may be made available as a download. But no word on anything else.
Welcome to the forum, BTW – I’m relatively new here myself… 😉

Exactly- she is a poet. I have been to see poets and authors- they all read their work. Music is her medium, but she is a poet.
Now that you mention that, (and not to belabor the point about the lyric book, but) I was fortunate enough to see the “Poetry Spoken, Poetry Sung” show in Nashville a couple of years ago with Lu & her Dad, the poet Miller Williams. Mr. Williams read his poetry from notes, not reciting it from his head if memory serves.
So, maybe she gets it from her Dad? 😀
