I’ll just add that I didn’t find her offensive at all. And despite Lucinda’s thinking that she wasn’t putting on a good show out of the gate, I disagree. I would go back again for exactly the same show.

I totally agree. I have a detailed review in the “Atlanta Setlist” thread.

To elaborate on the “f-bombs”, they don’t bother me or my wife, I suppose, because rough language doesn’t offend us (I was in the military, and there “f-ing” is a universal adjective!). While I certainly understand that it does indeed offend others, you really should know what you’re getting with Lucinda – at least you should if you are familiar with her body of work – because she uses the “f-word” in some of her songs (“Essence” & “Jailhouse Tears” come to mind, for example).

I’m not discounting anyone else’s view here – just stating that the audience was not universally offended or “brought down”… 😉

Here I am – a little slow this afternoon after quite a (long – more on this later) night & a bit too much wine. I can’t really add anything to stoger’s write-up regarding Lu’s set (great review, stoger), and the set list notes I took match his to a tee (except I didn’t bother to write down the encore – too excited & again, too much wine I suppose).

It was a beautiful, albeit very humid, night. Rain threatened a couple of times (not storms, but a couple of times a few drops fell as if it were going to lightly rain), but the Music Gods smiled upon us & it didn’t rain. I was in a great mood and ready for a great show, and I was not disappointed. The night turned out to be even better as we were surrounded on the lawn by some really cool folks.

When Lu played at the Botanical Gardens 2 or 3 years ago, I got there at about 4:00 PM and was the only one in line for two hours. 😯 So, this year, we took our time getting there after a great Mexican dinner, and arrived at about 6:05 only to find 150 or so people already queued up. Oh well, you just never know. Nonetheless, we managed to get in quickly, and found a spot on the lawn almost dead center and “third” row – just behind a large blanket laid out & reserved for family members of the band – Lu’s included, I believe, because one of the women who was there bore a striking resemblance to Lu.

Buick 6’s set was fantastic. A little surf vibe on one of the songs, a nice funk groove to another (during which I was getting a bottle of wine & saw a security guard in the back bobbing his head to the beat – we caught each others eyes & smiled big – totally getting into the music). They finished up with an instumental cover of “Black Dog” and then a sung cover of “Cinnamon Girl” – both done fantastically. Like I said, a great set – I’m looking forward to their CD.

Like I said before, I’ve not much to add to stoger’s review of Lu’s set except to say, yes, Lu complained about the lights, but I felt it did not detract from her show one iota (despite someone’s else’s post in another thread). My take is Lu’s music and poetry is what I am there to see and hear & if something is not to her liking with the sound or the lights or whatever, she has every right to say something about it. It does not (to me any way) diminish the music and the poetry. I guess I just love her talent that much. In fact, last night’s was one of the best of a dozen or so shows or hers I’ve had the pleasure to see.

I brought a couple of posters (one a gig poster from the Malibu, CA show we went to a in October, 2005, and one a cool “Southern Woman” promo poster for CWOAGR) to see if we could see Lu after the show to get them signed. I also bought the Print Mafia gig poster for last night’s show – the best one IMHO that I have seen of the series so far – a really cool Dia de los Muertos style skull design. My great & patient wife Sarah and I hung out near the buses for quite a while without seeing any one other than roadies loading gear. Then, I saw Doug up by the front of one of the buses, so I walked over and chatted with him and the bass player (sorry – I can’t recall his name). They were very cool & Doug signed a couple of my posters for me.

Then, just as we were about to call it a night, Lu & Tom were nice enough & gracious enough to come out & chat with us for a nice long time & Lu signed my posters for me! They were both fantastic – very nice & unassuming. I was a little drunk & a little star-struck – I hope I didn’t embarrass myself too much, but it was like a dream come true. Lu apologized for her comments during the show about the lights, but she said they were really, really bad, and I told her not to worry – it wasn’t a problem at all for us. I’d like to publically thank Lu & Tom for their kindness to Sarah & myself. They truly made it a night that we will never forget. I was on a cloud all the way home!

Thanks for the posting, Tom. That doesn’t even cover 1/5 of the F-bombs that rained down on us that night. Hope that you enjoy the show in Atlanta next week. I have a feeling it’ll be a great one.

No problem – after I posted the link, I saw it had already been posted in its own thread. So, nothing new, but I suppose it really belonged in the thread anyways… 😉

Yeah, I can’t wait until the show at the Botanical Gardens – less than a week now. I’ll be sure and post up a set list & review afterwards (the day after, no doubt – I am always drained after an emotional Lu show).

Anyone know how much these are selling for at the shows?

Also, any word of when ones from past shows will be available on the Web site store?

    Thanks!

Wow! I didn’t know that. He’s done quite well for himself, then. 😉 I have to admit I was somewhat mesmerized by Pieta’s striking beauty at the show. 😳

The show itself was great – I agree with Scott that Bo’s guitar work was fantastic. Unfortunately, however, for some reason there were only about 8 people in the club to see the show. I felt bad for Pieta & Bo, playing to a near-empty house, but they nonetheless put on a great, full show for the few of us that had sense enough to be there! 😀 Plus, it made it super easy to get her autograph after the show when she wandered by me in the lobby.

And, thanks for the link to the article, Lefty.

    Amen to that!

So, IJ, who sang the “male” part in the studio, or did Lu sing both?

    Tom

EDIT: N’mind – just saw the answer in the “Jailhouse Tears” thread. Good choice… 😉

Thanks for the reviews, setlists, info, etc. everyone. I’m really looking forward to the Atlanta show. If anyone here is there, I’ll be in line early at the gate (even though it didn’t pay off that well last time at the Garden as sponsor volunteers & top-level Garden members / donors got in early), so come by and say “hey” – I’m the big guy w/ gray hair & glasses…

Amen – I have never understood that.

I also personally don’t disdain any musician who elects to let his / her music be used commercially. It’s their work, their product if you will, and their selling it in any way they see fit is their decision. In fact, I have discovered some new artists (for me) that I really enjoy because they elected to gain exposure via a TV commercial. Now granted, an established, well-known artist is a different matter, but still – all I’m saying is if someone wants to make some (more) money with their work, more power to them.

I’m no big fan of JCM (he’s OK – if I was going to his show to see Lucinda, I’d stick around to hear his set), but I’m just saying… 🙂

I have waited around after shows on several occasions (six that I can recall) and four of those times Lu was kind enough to stop, chat, sign some items I had (I collect her gig posters), and even pose for a couple of pictures with me on one occasion (after the October 2006 Ventura, CA show).

The other two times she was already on her tour bus by the time I got there – once, here in Atlanta at the Botanical Gardens, she had family visiting on the bus with her (from Alabama, I think) that she acknowledged in the audience during the show, and the other (at the Kentucky Theater in Lexington), I think she just too tired after the show – yet and still a roadie (at Doug P.’s prompting, I think – Doug has been very nice the times I have seen him after shows as well) took a couple of gig posters I had onto the bus for me which she was kind enough to sign (and BTW, I don’t sell any of her signed items on eBay or anything – they are for my own collection & enjoyment).

In both the latter cases I was completely understanding of her wishes – I don’t blame her in the least if she isn’t feeling up to seeing folks after the show or, in the Atlanta case, in particular if she has family or friends visiting. The times I have seen her, she has been very accommodating and for that I was most grateful.

Sorry for the double-post, but I did some Googling myself, this time on the phrase “june bug vs. hurricane” and found this (link). – read the 5th paragraph. Apparently Lucinda herself has cited the Birney Imes book (as well as the book “Appalachian Portraits” by Shelby Lee Adams) as the source of her inspiration for “2 Kool…”.

Also, speaking of juke joints, anyone interested in old Mississippi Delta Blues like that played in old-time juke (or alternatively, “jook”) joints should check out this CD box set (link). I have it (see my review at the link above) and love it…

    Tom

P.S. And check out this (link). Read the Lu quote directly under the picture…

I’ve always loved this lyric from “2 Kool…” in particular – I’ve often quoted it when talking to others about how Lucinda can paint a vivid picture of the Old South with an economy of words. Not having seen any of these pictures, or even the book “Juke Joint” itself, I have always interpreted the lyric as Mike does, but maybe even more broadly. To me, “June Bug” represents the Old South – not only places like juke joints, but also small general stores, garages, fruit stands, etc. – even small town squares – small, privately owned businesses & places where people used to hang out & socialize. And “Hurricane” represents the unstoppable forces of commercialization, globalization and homogenization – forces that are slowly yet irrevocably changing the Old South, fading its unique character to a generalized U.S. culture of Wal-Marts, chain restaurants and bars, television and music.

Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it… 😀

    Tom

P.S. Great finds Mike & Gringo – fascinating stuff – definitely an inspiration for “2 Kool…”

P.S.S. Yes, bones, coffee4throad is right, I think – what you are hearing as “Play me choco train” in “Righteously” is “Play me John Coltrane”… 😉
