Cool idea – this’ll be fun.
How about some old Allman Brothers? Being a Georgia Boy, I’d love to hear that. Lends itself very well to jammin’ & would be a real crowd pleaser, IMHO.
“Don’t Want You No More” or “It’s Not My Cross To Bear” come to mind. Or, if they want to play an instrumental that was originally an instrumental, there’s always “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”…

Tom: You may have to exercise some patience with “The Mountain.” It took me more than a few times to start appreciating it.
After listening to The Mountain a few times straight through now, I agree that it grew on me, Lefty. However, in my case, I liked it right off with the first listen, and grew to like it more & more with each subsequent listen. I love Erica’s inflection & intonation when she sings – really cool, IMHO.

tntracyParticipantSounds like a unique night for sure, tonyg. I can only imagine what it was like in a dark theater watching / listening to a show illuminated by only flashlights. Must have been surreal.
Thanks for the report.

“Why in the hell are you here?”
Excellent question. I’ve often wondered myself.
Tom
tntracyParticipantAh, the video game – I actually have heard of it (not seen it or played it, however – I’m not into video games). I just didn’t realize it had it’s own online music store…
Tom
tntracyParticipantSounds great, Tom – I for one am looking forward to the upcoming tour. While Doug will certainly be missed, change presents opportunities for new & exciting musical directions – opportunities that are apparently being explored. I can’t wait to hear Eric, Chet & the rest of the band perform with Lu later this month!
Thanks for the update – your efforts to keep Lu’s fan base “in the loop” are much appreciated.
Tom
tntracyParticipantWish I could help you out, but (and I’m sure I am either really dating myself here and / or unabashedly displaying how out of touch with popular culture I am), but I don’t know what “the Rock Band platform” is.
Nonetheless, I agree with your last statement wholeheartedly!

Correction, there, DIM: It’s actually their v. there (probably pronounced “thษr”). Sorry for the pointer however, I find the devil is in the details…

I first saw the Heartless Bastards in Ventura. I think it was the 06 tour. Tom, you were there. I can’t say I’m a big fan, though. I thought they were too loud.
It’s true – I was there. And, I’ll give you that – they were pretty loud. But, ever since I saw Drive-By Truckers in a small theater, I have adjusted my determination of what I think is too loud. ๐ That DBT show was the loudest show I have ever been to. My wife’s & my ears rang for two days afterwards. Since then, I have gotten into the habit of bringing cotton balls in a small zip-lock bag to most shows in case I need them…

Erika is a special talent, imho.
I agree, Lefty. I just ordered The Mountain & am looking forward to its arrival.
And, who knows? With Doug P.’s apparent departure, maybe Lu will have Heartless Bastards open some shows again. I really enjoyed the 2 shows I saw when their previous incarnation opened for her…

tntracyParticipantHere is a link to an article in the NY Times about Heartless Bastards / Erica Wennerstrom. (I believe you need to register at the NYT Web site to read their content).
I liked this quote from Lu in the article:
I love the Heartless Bastards. Erikaโs voice is dynamite. Sheโs so real. She doesnโt think about all of that stuff โ the fluff, the presentation, the marketing, the publicity. This will probably work to her disadvantage.
I also found it interesting that the “new” band (Jesse Ebaugh on bass and Dave Colvin on drums) were the original Heartless Bastards that recorded the 2003 demo that got Erica the recording contract with Fat Possum Records.

but life goes on and god knows we have a buttload of great audio from the “Doug P era.” It was a hit when Gurf M left, and obviously she survived and grew, so lets see what happens before slamming the door…
Well said.
I will certainly miss Doug as much as anyone. He was always very nice & gracious to me (as were all the band members, and Lu & Tom as well) after shows, and no one could doubt his musicianship. His guitar playing was masterful – a real pleasure to watch & hear.
However, all the hand wringing aside, I still look forward with great anticipation to the shows in Birmingham & Atlanta at the end of this month. I have every confidence that Lu & Tom will find another gifted lead guitar player to take Doug’s place. After all, before Doug, there was Gurf Morlix, Bo Ramsey, & Kenny Vaughan. When each of these gifted guitar players moved on, I am sure there were many fans who were equally upset & concerned. Yet, life went on, Lu went on & many more great shows were staged.

And while we are defining terms, “bombast” means “pretentious inflated speech or writing”. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black… ๐
