There was indeed a reprise in B’ham. Perhaps there will be others…

Any other ideas?
Stoger, Lafayette & I discussed this Saturday night while waiting for Lu to take the stage. I think this one is an awesome idea & something I’d be all over like white on rice.

tntracyParticipantHey Railroad – glad you posted up with your thoughts about last night’s show. Welcome…

Yeah, got that, just wanted to create some mystery and hopefully help sales
After ripping the CD I got at last night’s Atlanta show on my Mac to put on my iPod, I couldn’t find the cover art anywhere on the Internet to add to the ID3 tags on the songs. So, I scanned my own, then remembered this “gun moll” discussion and figured some forum members who haven’t made it to a show yet would like to see the cover art for themselves…

21 Motherless Children [with an emphasis on the Macon, GA residence of Blind Pearlie Brown]
Oh yeah, I meant to elaborate on this. Being a Georgia Boy, Lu’s anecdote here was meaningful (and new) to me. She said that, while living in Macon, GA as a child (“in the early 60’s” was the time frame she gave), her father took her to see Blind Pearly Brown sing. She said that this was her introduction to Delta Blues.
More info on Blind Pearly Brown can be found here. More info on him can be found here. (Americus is a small town in SW Georgia about 70 SSW from Macon as the crow flies and is now best known as the home of the organization Habitat For Humanity. His birthplace, Abbeville, is about 60 miles due east of Americus).

tntracyParticipant❓ Hmmmm. To each their own, but I like her new look very much. Even if I didn’t, it sure wouldn’t be a distraction during a performance for me.
But again, to each their own…

tntracyParticipantWow. What a show, what a weekend. Stoger just left our house after a breakfast loaded with eggs, bacon & Lu conversation and was very kind to indulge me afterwards while I showed off my Lu gig poster collection. He’s on his way back to Tennessee as I type this – God’s Speed in this weather, my friend.
We were up front and center of the Tabernacle for the show here in Atlanta last night, leaning on the edge of the stage at Lu’s feet. It was one of the best 20 or so shows I have seen. A great mix of old & new, “crooners” and rockers, and some new (for me) covers thrown in to spice things up. I was in awe all night. Stoger, Sarah & I did not get a chance to visit w/ Lu after the show last night, but Tom was gracious enough to come out & say “Hi” and take some things back stage to get signed (I picked up a copy of the Buick 6 CD at the merch table & he got all the guys less Butch (who was already on the bus) to sign it for me. Lu was taking some down time back stage to visit w/ the guys in Buick 6, understandably so, so we missed her this evening.
Back to the show. Things to note from my perspective: Lu and the band were firing on ALL cylinders at the Tabernacle. They were all ON, and Butch in particular was on fire. He ROCKED. Lu was in fine form – there were zero false starts, and her voice was beautiful. And not to be outdone, Chet, Eric & David kept up with the pace. Finally, the crowd was awesome. Everyone was really getting into the show, singing along on many of the songs. After last night, Lu should know without a doubt that we Atlantans LOVE HER!!!
I finally got to hear “Side Of The Road” live – not once, but twice! Once in B’ham, again in Atlanta. Just Lu on acoustic & Chet on electric. Awesome. Chills up & down my spine. Thanks, Lu.
The covers of Jimi Hendrix’s “Angel” (just Lu on acoustic) and Rod Stewart & The Faces’ “Every Picture Tells A Story” (the whole band) were both firsts for me, and they were both incredible. “Angel” was sweet & pure, “Every Picture…” rocked. A great rendition of both, and a very interesting contrast in style of covers.
Chet played harmonica on one track (my memory from shows is terrible, so stoger will have to fill in the actual song) and David upright bass on a couple others. Chet played some great pedal steel on “Lake Charles” and several other songs. Musically, this was a wonderful, wonderful show.
Lu’s speech against the corporate powers that be at TM/LN was VERY well-received as you can imagine. Her obvious passion about the issue was great. One thing stoger & I noticed at Will Call was they were having problems getting tickets printed from the computer system there at the window, blaming the switchover. Between the secrecy of the switchover, the confusion regarding the point of sale after the first of January, and this final snafu, I am sure that was why the show was not quite a sellout. Much Luck to Lu & Tom in getting something done about it going forward.
Some funny anecdotes: There was a gorgeous, young buxom blonde up front with an extremely low-cut dress on that caught everyone’s attention (including David’s if I read his grinning and the direction of several of his gazes during the first encore correctly). She was with a group of friends (college girls, perhaps?) who were enthusiastically getting into the show, singing along with every song. Obviously, true fans – I love to see anyone getting into Lu’s music so much. Stoger and I actually chatted with her after the show while we were waiting for Tom to come out & she was a nice youg lady to boot – from LA (“Lower Alabama”) no less. I do not recall her name, but hats off to her.
It was nice meeting Lafayette from this forum. Stoger, Sarah & I enjoyed a very late dinner / early breakfast (1:00 AM) with her at a late night downtown diner (w/ very bad karaoke downstairs) that we finally found after wandering around downtown Atlanta in the cold rain finding place after place that was just closing. Thanks to her for making the long drive down from Ohio. I’m sure she’ll post up after she gets back home.
And it was also nice meeting Randy & Kathy from Birmingham. They were also at the B’ham show the night before, although stoger & I did not meet them until waiting in line for doors last night. They are self-confessed “lurkers” here – hopefully they will join up so we can hear from them! They are huge Lu fans & got a setlist that someone from the crew took back for Lu to sign. Score!
Sarah got a show-used drumstick at the end of the show that was inscribed in black Sharpie “Lucinda Williams, Little Honey Tour 2009”, as did Lafayette – very nice souvenirs.
That’s all that comes to mind for now. Between the very, VERY special night in B’ham night before last & last night here in Atlanta, this was a Lu weekend that I will always treasure and certainly never, ever forget. Thanks again to stoger for being my “wing man” all weekend. He made it even better.
Tom
P.S. In the “Last But Not Least” department: A special “Thanks” goes out to Tom Overby who once again proved to be the best manager in the business by showing his true concern for & appreciation of Lu’s fans. His efforts are much appreciated.

So who is playing Doug’s parts? The Chet? How is the new guitarist?
Some Chet, some Eric (the new guitarist). I noted at the Atlanta show that Chet took lead during “Pineola”. And Eric showed both in B’ham & Atlanta that he has quickly gotten up to speed on the lead for “Out Of Touch” (B’ham) and “Tears of Joy” (Both B’ham & Atlanta). The latter, especially, deserves special mention. Stoger pointed out as we were chatting prior to the Atlanta show that Eric did a particularly admirable job on “Tears of Joy” the night before in B’ham, so when they played it again last night in Atlanta, I paid special attention and stoger was right – he nailed it. Very impressive. Eric is fitting in very, very well, so fear not – all is well in “Lu Nation”… 😉

tntracyParticipantYep, great show, good review, stoger. Thanks, as always for being the forum archivist with the always-accurate setlist. I was blown away by the song selction last night. So many gems, so many firsts for me personally. It was a show for the ages.

As for the aftershow, well, I’ll let TN say more if he chooses. Suffice to say here: A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL.
Heh heh. Well, stoger, mama always warned me about being one of those “kiss and tell” kinda guys. I’ll just say that I never thought finding a open bar in Birmingham on a Friday night would be such a challenge. But, in the end, persistence is a virtue – “seek & ye shall find”. 😉 I’d like to wholeheartedly thank all who participated in the seeking – “A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL”, indeed. “A night I will never forget” is the understatement of the year. 😉
Oh, and thanks for letting me “make a pallet on your floor” last night, stoger (“Atlanta Blues” – how apropos!). I was up with the dawn, the drive home was uneventful, & I will see you tonight!

It was one of those moments.
Wow. Wish I was there (how often have I said THAT after a Lu show? 😆 ).
And, as a huge Hank Williams fan, do me a favor, Tom & drop Lu a hint about repeating that performance of “Cold Cold Heart” this tour, would ya? Not only is it one of my favorite Hank Williams’ tunes, but I also love the cover of it Lu did as a bonus track that I have on the Japanese import version of WWT. Hearing it live would be an incredible treat…
As for the other treat from this show, I have been lucky enough to hear Lu perform “Ode to Billy Joe” live – at the Ryman no less. It was 4 or 5 years ago, and it was simply awesome.
Thanks as usual for the set list / show report. Between you & stoger, we got it all covered this tour!!!

Who opened the show?
The revamped Buick 6 (Lu’s backing band) is opening – “revamped” in that Doug P. has been replaced with Eric S. & Chet has taken on some additional guitar duties if I am not mistaken (I haven’t seen them yet – I will tomorrow & Saturday nights…)

Yeah, Tom, “numbskulls” is about right, better than my phrase “rough trade” really (though Lu has never been on the Numbskull record label: Ha!). As someone who lives more or less halfway between Nashville and Memphis, I try to stay neutral–but you’re right that that Nashville crowd, though not large, was better behaved and more attentive up front.
Yeah, stoger, the geographical comparisons can become quite interesting. Having gone to most of my shows (naturally) in the Atlanta area, I don’t see as many drunk / physically obnoxious folks at shows as much as I see “yakers”. People talking during performances seems to me to be out of control here in Atlanta. One notorious venue for that problem here is Chastain Park (outdoor) Ampitheater. Coupled with the fact that this venue is located smack dab in the middle of an affluent residential area, and therefore has a decibel restriction, the talkers become more than a nuisance, they become unbearable. Chaistain Park has a Summer concert series every year that is more of a yuppie social scene (the venue allows coolers and picnic baskets which, in and of itself, is a fantastic feature) than a music-lover’s paradise. In fact, IIRC, the last time Lu played there was when she opened for Neil Young several years back and that is the night that Neil verbally chastised the crowd for talking during his set. I don’t blame him – it’s downright rude to both the performers & the other audience members & It’s gotten to the point where I won’t go there for concerts any more (the outside food & beverage notwithstanding).
And, to bring this back on point, standing up front & close to the stage also serves to solve this talking problem for me quite nicely, so that is another reason I enjoy these type shows (provided I get there early enough to claim my spot up front, of course!). But, I do also see the attraction to a nice, comfortable reserved seat that you know you will be able to see from and don’t have to worry about unwanted physical contact from the sweaty drunken stranger to your left / right / front / rear. So, I don’t mean to dismiss your perspective – I suppose it does indeed ultimately depend on the type of crowd and venue.
I’ll see you tomorrow night in B’ham, my friend. Will Paul be there as well? I will shoot you a PM w/ my cell phone number so we can meet up. I should be getting in town between 5:00 & 5:30 PM. Do you like BBQ? I know a good spot a few miles from the theater… 😉
Tom
tntracyParticipantThanks for the interesting report, stoger. I’m sorry to hear you had the bad experiences you did standing at the stage. I, too (although not at a Lu show specifically) have had some bad experiences at standing shows up by the stage due to rude & obnoxious people. Yet and still, for Lucinda shows, I much prefer the energy & excitement of the standing shows up by the stage as opposed to the reserved seating shows. I’ll never forget that night at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Nashville last fall (you were there, too!). The incredible change in energy & fun that occurred between the first half of the show when everyone was seated and the second half after Lu invited everyone to get up on their feet and come up to the stage was something I will always remember. I had so much more fun (and so did Lu as she told us after the show) the second half that I am willing to take the chance on encountering some numbskulls in order to “get down” and have a good time. Fortunately, the numbskulls, at least in my experience so far, have been few and far between…
