TimParticipant
A very good article, and two great posts guys!
TimParticipantDoug left Lucinda before the February tour after eight years as her right hand man. A huge loss in my opinion.
TimParticipantDitto, jackstraw!
TimParticipantStoger, thank you for all of your incisive reports; never get tired of them. I know you’re on your way to Colorado. Don’t know if you have a vehicle, but if you have the time, Estes Park is only about 45 minutes north of Boulder on Route 36. Beautiful place up there with Rocky Mountain National Park.
TimParticipantThere are some great live records listed here. Just want to mention a new live record (CD & DVD’s) that has just been released by two of the best musicians in this or any other era. Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood got together for three great shows at Madison Square Garden in NYC in late February. The shows were filmed & recorded. To call these two men masters is almost an understatement. The way they play and feed off each other is a breath of fresh air. They do all of the Blind Faith album except for one song, some Cream, Traffic and songs from their own solo careers. Also cover two Jimi Hendrix songs; “Voodoo Chile” (which Steve played organ on on the original recording), and “Little Wing” (which Eric recorded with Derek & The Dominoes). Amazing music here, and I would suggest the DVD version. Great sound and camera work. They are out touring together right now in the States and the last show will be June 30 at The Hollywood Bowl.
TimParticipantLefty, thank you for posting that incredible clip of “Powderfinger”. I needed it bad; it made my day!
TimParticipantGreat to hear that you’ll be making it to Lake George, Fugi81. It looks like a great setting there and Eilen and her band are at the top of their game. I’ve heard they just had two great, well-received shows in D.C. and Raleigh. It’ll be a bit of a trek for me, but I’m considering it also.
TimParticipantI caught Eilen Jewell and her band at The Iron Horse in Northampton over the weekend. The house was packed and enjoyed an opening set by Sarah Levecque and her band, who played their own brand of country/rock/blues. After a short break Eilen and the band came on stage all dressed in black. She went up to the mic and said, “We’re not going to beat around the bush”, and launched into two great songs from the new album, Sea of Tears & Rain Roll In. She had the audience in the palm of her hand and did not lose them the rest of the night. Eilen was in high spirits and her voice was perfect. Ace guitarist Jerry Miller was incredible all night long. His lightning quick runs up and down the fretboard during his solos elicited an ovation from the crowd after each one! Jason Beek on drums and backing vocals and Johnny Sciascia on upright bass were as solid as a rock. Highlights were: Sweet Rose, Shakin’ All Over, I’m Gonna Dress In Black, Rich Man’s World, Dusty Boxcar Wall, High Shelf Booze, Fading Memory.
For the encore Sarah came out and did a duet with Eilen on Loretta Lynn’s “Honky Tonk Girl”. After this Eilen did a great version of the traditional song “If You Catch Me Stealing”, which was once recorded by Bessie Smith. It was a great night of music, and all I can say is this band has been together now for quite awhile and they are tight! They’ve just embarked on a tour which is criss-crossing the States. In September & October they will be touring throughout Europe. If they come near your neck of the woods check them out.TimParticipantfugi81, she is quite a talent with a very good band. I have tickets to see her at The Iron Horse in Northampton, MA next Friday. Can’t wait!
TimParticipantI agree with you DavidInMaine. Es was a weird choice. Unfortunately Doug leaving so quickly didn’t leave much time for a replacement. I am no longer a fan of this band.
TimParticipantThank you for the notice Lisa. I’ll do my best to make it. Last night I saw Ray LaMontagne at The Calvin Theatre in Northampton. It was an astounding performance; still trying to get over it this morning. Thanks, again!
TimParticipantLucinda Williams will be playing the Brown Theatre in Louisville, KY on June 14.
TimParticipantThank you for the link, Lefty. This sounds like it’s going to be a good one!
TimParticipantGreat to see your report, Bob. I thought we saw something special last night. Stoger, I guess I asked for it, but I’m going to be seeing Susannah again tonight for sure! I’m up here in Burlington; just got back from a ride downtown and by Lake Champlain. Like Lefty said, it is definetely a Republic. The drivers don’t have anything on the pedestrians’ here, they just walk right in front of you at every intersection.
As far as closing with “For What It’s Worth”. Just before “World Without Tears”, Lucinda talked about hearing on the news that they caught terrorists in Amsterdam. She wondered what the world is coming to when in such a peaceful country that this is happening. She mentioned that they had to go to Australia and maybe Europe after this. She said, “What do we do? Do we cancel the tours? I think everyone just has to be brave.” So she played “WWT”. After that she conferred with the band, came to the mike and said she wanted to end the evening on a more positve note. Hence, FWIW.TimParticipantThanks, Lefty. I told Susannah last night that I haven’t been to Burlington since I was 13. She just said, “so you haven’t been there for a real long time!” OUCH!!!
Hopefully I can post on the show tonight from the hotel there. I’m going to have to pass the baton off to you for the Rochester show. Take Care. -
