After getting back from Australia there will be a couple shows at the end of April. Although they have not yet been officially announced yet, Lucinda will be appearing 4/27 at the Wine & Food festival in Austin and 4/28 in Phoenix at Cave Creek.
Also, on 4/20 she will be appearing as part of a very special Austin City Limits tribute show for Johnny Cash’s 80th birthday celebration. It will be an amazing lineup of artists. More details soon.
Most likely these will be the only shows in the first half of the year.
Gotta love this short promo video for 4/28 @Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek,AZ entitled “Chicks With Picks”
Tickets on sale tomorrow.

Didn’t see the Lu connection when I clicked on this, lwj, but maybe You Tube’s just another thing I don’t have a password for which now requires one. I’m all over the ticket sale Thursday; is there an obvious link to the ticket outlet? Thanks.

I was on Cayamo and am happy to fill in a few details here for the regular posters. I did not see Tuesday’s show but my roommate did and said Lu was fantastic. I was there for Wednesday and Thursday’s shows. At Wednesday’s show (which is the one where the reviewer quoted above said she was a diva), it seemed Lucinda was having problems hearing something, either the guitars or herself, one of the crew kept coming out trying to correct the problem, but was not able to resolve and at one point she threw something small, either a capo or the offending piece of equipment, but once they got the issue resolved, she settled right down and gave a great show. She was smart or had gotten good advice beforehand and wore deck shoes at all her shows, the stage does roll quite a bit, I’ve seen some performers almost topple over in high heeled boots. Highlight of Wednesday show was Jailhouse Tears with Jim Lauderdale, it was great and they seemed to really be having fun together.
though Miller’s appearance was a bit strange at first because she called him out one song early.
Regarding this, Rhett Miller spoke about it at a later guitar pull, said she had suggested he come out for Joy and when he said, but there is no harmony part there, she said come out for Get Right with God — then called him and Jim both out for Joy, but that Lauderdale had the good sense to not go out. Rhett laughed and said he didn’t know what to do once he was out there so he just grabbed a tambourine and shook his butt. Lu made a reference after that song thanking him for dancing.
She put on three good shows, but as far as I know did not make any appearances with anyone else, although her drummer and Tom Pettybone sat in with some others later in the week. She really brought it with her final numbers and encore the nights I saw — was really a great Lucinda show. Thanks for this! And “Tom Pettybone” ??? Has there ever been such a great splicing together of two figures important to the playing of, the appreciation of, and the covering of Lucinda’s songs? I call that figure a multi-instrumental Heartbreaker, even if he’s a dual mythical synthetic figure!

Lu played the first of her 3 one hour shows last night and managed to keep her balance the whole time as the ocean was rolling a little more last night. Great set last night with smiles all around. It was also great to have Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale sit in.
Here is the selist:
Side Of The Road (Lu & Doug)
Can’t Let Go
Ventura
Born To Be Loved
Fruits Of My Labor
Jackson (last minute addition by Lu–joined by Mr. Lauderdale)
Jailhouse Tears (w/ Mr. Lauderdale)
Righteously
Honey Bee
Joy (w/ Buddy Miller)
Get Right w/ God (w Buddy & Jim)Quick encore:
BlessedNight 2 coming up in three hours
Until the threads are joined, I’ll comment here, with much appreciation to Tom for starting us off. I’m assuming the rhythm section is along for the [sometimes bumpy] ride? Rhett Miller being early on stage reminds me of a Red Rocks festival where he was late, joining the Old 97’s midset after a late flight incident or some such, two or so acts before Lu worked her magic as the penultimate bill in front of Ryan Adams. As for Lafayette’s predicted mutiny, let’s hope that “diva” blogger kept to cabin.
Nice variations apparently from night to night, even if encores are “quick” (not to say token), and it’s good to note the Lu tendency to interject songs like “Jackson” at the eleventh hour is not just a landlubber phenomenon. It sounds like the vibe has some of the best of the Car Wheels era up through the present, based on the personnel up there from set to set. More please, Tom.

Lots of fun researching this high seas tour.

I’m landlocked for the whole of February, lwj, no scoop to offer. I do rather like the idea of a honeymoon cabin for Doug and Liz, but is any schooner big enough for erstwhile band members like Mr. Produniak and Mr. Pettibone alongside the present folk? What, Jim Christie spotted surfing off the starboard side? Could be happening. . .
stogerParticipantFolks, I’m at the same cursed computer and am going to defer to Paul to post from home. I”m sure he’s taking an earlier train than I am north.
A couple of teasers: in addition to Abandoned and Lafayette, we got Like a Rose.
Quote of the night: after a tepid rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” by some elements of the audience between song one and song two, Lu’s immediate reply was “I need a lot more on the vocal up here, John.”
What an anti-sentimentalist, what a woman.

It was Dead Dog, Stoger. What was the song wher he sang “I’m Sorry I Fucked Up” over and over?
Oops. Guess the censor module ain’t workin either.
I believe the title with 16 f-bombs (symmetrically split in two series of eights) is called “Don’t Tell Our Friends About Us.” Or perhaps the pronoun at end is “me.” At any rate, if the key word goes by the censor one time, it should be good for sixteen.
stogerParticipantNot much to add, Tony: and I certainly couldn’t have provided the real time update bulletins you did. At any rate, the main set ended with “Changed the Locks.” Blake did more original material than usual, new song I think with “Dog” in title. Only one cover–and that was the Lu song.
The view from up front? Mighty fine, but the house was pretty empty all in all. Still, a fine night of songs.

Thanks for posting, WW.
Before I ‘slip these surly bonds of earth,’ I’d love to hear Lucinda one day perform “Meet Me in the Morning” live & on-stage!Is this the same as “sloughing off the mortal coil,” Lefty?

But I wish someone would remind me next trip to ask the personnel at the Hertz rental counter in downtown Sacramento about the add-on amenity of tire chains.
Hey stoger, can you give us a brief synopsis of the I 80 road condition to Tahoe? SHEER HELL.
Did you and the new “English” have to chain up? TWICE, GOING IN SAT. AND OUT SUN.
Was there a late start to the concert? NO, BUT THEIR BUS WAS 2 HOURS LATE TO GRASS V.Thanks again for your colorful reports.
And here’s a review of the show.

stogerParticipantSee setlist and bracing corrective to some anti-Mills sentiment in the other Napa thread.
stogerParticipantThe eminently lovable and perhaps sometimes distracting (from lyrics/because of his virtuosity on guitar) Blake Mills did a fine five-song opener in Napa, without “It’ll All Work Out.” Perhaps it was truncated because of some patrons sitting log-like on the plush seats, less engaged certainly than the Santa Cruz and San Juan folks.
The setlist:
World Without Tears
Jackson
Bus to Baton Rouge
Memphis Pearl
Blue
People Talkin’
Knowing [cp. reviewer’s title in the Santa Cruz press post]
Kiss Like Your Kiss
Trying to Get to Heaven
Drunken Angel
Pineola
Crescent City
Well Well Well
Can’t Let Go
Out of Touch
Don’t Let The Devil Ride
Changed the Locks
Honeybee [again, cp. title]

Get Right with God“Pineola” had the most elaborate intro I’ve ever heard, calling some of the graveyard mourners by name and also referencing the poet CD Wright (clearly, though not by name). Lucinda gave a shout-out to the traveling writers of the world here.
Blake went back to a more electronic instrument for Well Well Well after all that 10-string talk in S Cruz.
Lu pronounced herself “not very technically oriented” near end of set.
Forgot a bunch, but thanks to ralph/webmasta for restoration! And good to see longtime fans/friends Tom and Stephanie, to meet Christina and Mark too.
stogerParticipantYes, but will there be clear, passable roads which will get vehicles there sans chains? Where’s that navigating wizard “English” when you need him?!?
stogerParticipantMy rental car alone should cheer me up, lwj. As Lafayette knows, I’ll just GPS it right to Uptown Napa!
stogerParticipantHa ha no setlist: I know what she means figuratively, but this is now a challenge to me to scrape one off the casino stage floor or scarf one up from soundman John. Hard to believe there won’t literally be a printed one, but only toverby knows for sure. . . .
stogerParticipantSorry got cut off earlier.
Tonyg is right that it’s a long haul between San Juan C and Santa Cruz, especially on surface public transport. Thanks to grumpymama for a lift part of the way Tuesday night, but it was rugged and ragged on Amtrak train/bus combos from then on. Tour manager Eric assured me he slept like a baby on the crew’s overnight run, but I can’t say the same. Still, this is special.
I am afraid (see earlier in this stream) I was misinformed by the kindly record store employee (whose store I visited downtown yesterday, near The Catalyst). No standing area was possible, as temp. chairs had been placed right up against stage and were sold at a higher price. NObody moved, nobody rose the whole evening, except maybe to walk out to the lobby where coffee was the lone beverage for sale, it would seem. I mean, it was fine sitting in the back row across from the soundboard, but not what I expected. I’ve never seen Lu at Catalyst but apparently that was where the mayor declared “Lucinda Williams Day” that time. Two different venues. This was fine, appropriate I guess for a duo stripped down show. Lu seemed not unhappy.
She called attention to her own impending birthday which will be the Belly Up show, causing some guy standing in the back to blurt out “Oh, I’ve played there.” BFD, buddy. She also noted Woody Guthrie’s impending 100th when starting the encore.
She called the sound “airy” at one point and “boomy” at another, then admitted she doesn’t understand the vocabulary.
Blake was fine again, though with virtually no audience energy, causing him to say “somebody’s got to do it” (the opening act). But he played the same six–3 covers 3 originals– in great form, was pleased to be doing it despite the crowd. “Half this shit is for sale” was his sardonic nod to commercialism.
Ah Napa: cheer me up!
