Well, there was nothing subtle about this setlist, was there? If a “commodore” might be allowed to make a few small corrections to west words’ report, despite Lu saying early in the set “we’re glad to share the stage with the Drive By Truckers,” that was not them out there again for “Get Right with God.” I suspect they had long fled the premises. The only two she named and thanked after the song were Justin Jones and Dave Phenicie (sp?), formerly of Stonehoney and also accompaniest to the likes of Anne McCue and Angela Easterling. People of all age groups and genders were moving about the stage, though. Lu’s quasi-Southern rock set fit a co-bill with the Truckers (each was listed as precisely 70 minutes, and Lu finished right at the 11 p.m. curfew); it was especially nice to get “Atonement,” and Lu has never done the Allman cover with quite as much spirit as Saturday night, to my hearing.
And I’m afraid it was the late DONNA Summer, not the season, that Lu commemorated a couple of songs in. Still, the celebratory spirit existed.

Stoger, the correct answer is Leonard Cohen! And no he didn’t get the job.
You might have to go public with this narrative now. Didn’t the band member in question say the artist in question was “American?” NORTH American, I suppose.
Did Peter Gabriel really cut “Suzanne?”
stogerParticipantFond memories of seeing the likes of Anne McCue and Sara Petite there, tony. Any news from anyone in the band? Gram Parsons country thereabouts, much mystical about that area.

The Eclectic Baboon? 🙄
Are Aaron Margosis and Tom Tracy then one and the same person? 😀
stogerParticipantI knew there was a reason I went for that single next to a threesome rather than a twosome. Until mid-July. . .

Excellent reporting tonyg and stoger.
Just a couple of thoughts on the event in the desert.
Did Buick 6 open the show ?
Great set list but only one song from “Blessed”I took a peek at Harold’s Corral website and it seems there is a fan club and a great following of the Pittsburgh Steelers there. Did you find out how this might have started ?
lwj
Tony duly noted the Steelers decorative motif upon our afternoon entry, cautioning me not to say anything against the Black and Gold while on the premises. Perhaps an owner who had enough of smelt and iron ore and moved to the Desert to found his own establishment? Where that leaves the Cardinals I’m not sure.
It was a daylong fest with nine or ten acts, including Jessi Colter, so no Buick 6–though I’m not sure Stuart Mathis would be up to speed on such a task. Might have been cool to see Doug dominate “Cinnamon Girl” and put some poetry to the instrumentals, though.
yeah, I thought we might get the title track from Blessed, but not with the up-front raucousness by time of encore. We barely got “Born to Be Loved,” as Lu was all for eradicating the so-called ballads at that juncture. Whatever else she’s about, promoting the latest release is not a Lu signature, I’m glad to say.

stogerParticipantI’m hoping tonyg will write more, and grumpy mama as well. Thanks to both for good company. The show got into gear when Lucinda, after bemoaning the ballads following “Over Time” yet proceeding to play two more relatively slow ones, exploded with “no more F ballads” after “Still I Long,” then said “y’all don’t know you can come up front and dance?” A few souls moved forward to timidly sit on the bales of hay between the plush row one seats and the stage proper, prompting tour manager Eric Frankenhouser to tap them on the shoulder and motion for them to rise and holler. This, the same man who had practically tackled a photographer early set who was grazing the same area. But when mama wants it and commands it, things happen. A deluge toward the front ensued. She ended happily. I wouldn’t call Harold’s the most sophisticated of crowds; among the shouted requests I heard to my left and right (and eventually to my front) throughout the evening were “Things Have Changed,” “Righteous,” and “Saint Charles.” Rock on, Lucinda, rock on.
stogerParticipantJust a brief capsule to note that, upon tntracy’s tip, I drove to Oxford for Shannon McNally Thursday night. Much to my delight, Amy Lavere opened–with a generous hour-long, dozen-song set. Half of these were off the new record Stranger Me, one off her first record, two from Anchors & Anvils, and a pair from the EP (the Waits cover + title track “Died for Love”). She also played a song I didn’t know, perhaps titled “The Bridge.” Not to mention two tunes earlier in the evening at the Lyric Theatre for a live taping of Thacker Mountain radio show, two different ones (“Killing Him” and “Take It or Leave It”). In preparation for The Wandering “supergroup” tour, Shannon invited Amy up to join her for two songs from that material; Amy disparaged that a bit and said “we’ll be ready” when the tour opens May 10, but I thought they were fine. The Wandering comprises Luther Dickinson from N Miss. All Stars, Shannon, Amy, and two other “chick singers” (as quoted by Bryson Jones), one of whom I think is the legendary fife player Otha’s daughter or grandaughter, can’t remember the surname. Perhaps tntracy can provide a link to the Wandering info; I asked Amy if she could sell me an advance copy of the record (due out May 8), but she hasn’t even received it or heard it. After the Wandering tour, Amy has a solo tour working west to east, beginning in either late May or early June.
Shannon was superb, though I had to leave an hour into hers. Eric Deaton on guitar, new member of Hot Sauce on some background vocals; the band left temporarily, and Shannon and her new member did a haunting Townes cover, “If I Needed You,” marred by boisterous Proud Larry’s patron noise. Didn’t get to talk to her.
And now to head toward a DIFFERENT female bard. . .
stogerParticipant42 photos but only four scant paragraphs of prose, lwj!!?!?!? But thanks for digging this out. Doug stage right was weird, brought to mind my dyslexic youth. Hopefully some patrons found the festival musical component more than mere “backdrop”–as will the biker chicks, grumpy mama, tony g and me come sundown in the Desert today. I’m on my way.
stogerParticipantHad to pass on this one, lwj, though I enquired weeks ago and was told to enter the contest for freebies or else pony up the full weekend fee. So Arizona and the girl bikers won out instead. Unless I’m delayed by a citizenship check, I should be able to file a timely report on the action there. . . .
stogerParticipantWhat, isn’t this venue named after the man who strode penniless and alone through Paris and told about it in Tropic of Cancer? Oh well.
stogerParticipantNever mind what the equinox, full moon, or Druids say: I have just declared May 19 the first official day of summer.
