Thanks Tony and Tom–didn’t notice the one title in skimming the article, and “Born to Be Loved” is not a surprising choice. Doug taking the great instrumental break on that one? And Mr. Overby, I’m going to take you up on one of those Bolano fiction recommendations.

Wow, I kind of thought the “beautiful people” of that town who don’t necessarily dig down-n-gritty blues covers might have dissuaded Lu from booking there again. Glad to see I was wrong!

Will be in the front row in Arvada. Coming all the way from Florida for my first Lu show. So excited!

Why not make a weekend triple and add Boulder and Ft. Collins (providing the fires subside) to your itinerary, Aracari Girl–as long as you are traipsing cross country? Your fellow Floridian “West Words” and I look forward to seeing you on the front row.

Nice, but are we still in the dark as to the three songs Lucinda did? I don’t suppose Blake Mills was part of the backing Dawes “house band?”

I enjoyed Amy Lavere’s 45-minute set last night at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles. Thanks to stoger for earlier posts about this fine singer and bassist. Amy performed in trio mode, with backup guitar and percussion. The audience included Lucinda, Tom, and Eric (tour manager)–Lucinda seemed very impressed with Amy, and also credited stoger for advising her about Amy’s show.

    Aw shucks, Paul.

For cross-referencing re: the fine Amy LaVere, see the threads “The Wandering” and “Shannon McNally” here.

“Galveston” would seem a second lock. And how about “Stowaway in Your Heart” as a hopeful, if uneducated, guess for the original?

My 10 year old son birthday is due for next month and he wants to throw a small friendly party so looking for a birthday venue in Los Angeles under 800$, this is the budget we set for his party. So, any event places.

It took 3 minutes after first joining the Forum to craft and send THIS? Sorry, I am only conversant with large and hostile party venues. But kudos to the moderator for leaving this here for laughs, and any photos of Tonyg at age 10 will be most welcome.

Mr. stoger – have we met? Your “handle” rings a bell… 😉

Aren’t you that guy from Chattanooga (“tn”) who likes male artists with falsettos?

Happened again -I think they haven’t cleared something and then I go back and look and sure enough I approved it. It was back in January which apparently is too far back for my memory.

It’s close enough to the show to open a new topic on it. The Miller Library is supposed to be a Big Sur Mecca for people who are much groovier than us. Might be some hipsters too. I gather Henry Miller lived in Big Sur for quite a while and the site of his library is the site of great serenity and such. At least until we get there.

Things I know: Parking sucks, there will be beer and wine sold there but no food. No bringing in food or drinks. It could get nippy after dark. There is restaurant very close by called Nepenthe that is supposed to be where the ultra cool people go and there are views of the ocean and such. I will be there before the show. Doors at 6, music at 7.

Things I don’t know: Everything else.

    Who else is going? 😀

Unfortunately not me, but what’s with all the “we/us” (implied square) vs. “the ultra cool” crowd, tongyg? A false dichotomy, wouldn’t you say? Surely you, grumpy mama, etc. outhipstered the Chickfest crowd, or at least held your own? With paulfromlosangeles in the picture, as I remember, I’d say old Hank Miller himself might come up short on the beat-ometer next week. Groovy.

    Jewel?

    Shit, syllable not word. 😳

You are the grand winner, Tony (though is there a double “l” on the end of hers? Or am I thinking of Eileen?). At any rate, congrats. I’ll have to take R Witherspoon over her in that role, however.

Forgot to mention that Zoe and Greg met at the Tractor Tavern, where Greg once ran sound. The one show I saw there was Anne McCue some years back, and he verified he was there. Also told a great story about John Doe tripping over his (Greg’s) dog one time, sending him sprawling. I don’t think Greg wanted to approach John at St. Louis’ Duck Room, for fear of invoking that memory. But you gotta like a music venue where staff pets are permitted.

Thank you, southpaw. The St. Louis show was superb, a built-in emphathetic crowd because it was the last of four nights of Twangfest, one of my favorite festivals since it’s (1) low-key and (2) indoors! John Doe headlined final night, two acts after Zoe, (more on him below), and of course I had played hooky the second night to go all the way across the Show Me State in a train for Muth in KC.

In-between, the Lost High Rollers played Springfield, IL, which Zoe described to the St. Louis crowd as a venue “where seven people showed up, four of whom were listening” (would that I myself had formed a fond fifth). The St. Louis set was shorter than Kansas City’s, no covers, but great sound and great vibe. A propos of the “Let’s Just Be Friends. . .” song, she improvised, “that’s probably good advice, especially if he shows you a picture of his four-year-old kid and walks around with a rifle in each hand.” None of the three new originals mentioned in this thread from the Seattle radio show were done either night, though one (the title stripped down to “Walking the Line”) is on the new EP.

In less public news, the wedding day for Zoe and her drummer Greg is August 4. I ascertained this by asking him, not her, as we were standing listening to Kevin Gordon; he answered by flipping open his cellphone and noting the number “56” in its lit-up left top corner–the countdown as to number of days remaining. Very charming gesture.

Also, I took the liberty of printing out the Forum page where Zoe’s sister Phoebe posted (actually, I printed out the whole thread and gave it to her). She had said in KC that she “can’t imagine” the sister actually doing this; I speculated maybe it was a hoax and she thinks maybe her parents were involved somehow. At any rate, she can see now what you good people have said about liking her work.

As for John Doe, he just filmed a movie playing A P Carter, called Ring of Fire. Who can guess the actress cast as June Carter Cash? Hint: Doug Pettibone has played with her. Further hint: this can be answered in one syllable.

Just bought Zoe’s new EP Old Gold (makes me want to buy a pack, the “poor man’s Marlboro” as Ms. Muth herself expressed it), Signature Sounds, five covers plus an original. It’s not officially out yet, but was available from her guitar pick-strewn merch case last night in Kansas City. J Prine among others, and I’ve heard her play most of them live. Small crowd but hoping for better tomorrow night in St. Louis.

The High Rollers have a new guitarist–no pedal steel in play on this tour.

A propos of another post in this thread, the liner notes include this: “I received a lot of my musical education while riding in my sister’s car.”

Great show and fine company, yes indeed tntracy. I believe Sharde Thomas’ band very much still exists, for last night in Charlotte was her final show of this tour; the van was to drop her off at an airport prior to her flying to Switzerland to join her band there. The Wandering has three more dates I think, including the Del McCoury festival.

Last night’s venue was Charlotte’s The Visulite, site of a memorable Bottle Rockets/Lucinda show once, rescheduled from the original date because of Lu’s mother’s impending death. The house was significantly larger capacity than Eddie’s Attic of Decatur–and significantly quieter, deader. But the sound system was superb and the band members seemed happy up there. Shannon McNally mentioned that she had opened here twice in past.

The Amy LaVere song in question is “The Great Divide,” from her new record. The Wandering also did a fine cover of “Died of Love,” a traditional song on Amy’s EP of the same title. She commented that no prior drummer had played as well on it as Sharde Thomas.
