You’ll make an English prof. yetTNTracy: I too noticed the city misspelling, and apologies to all for my own food misspelling. And for the record, I found the stuff tasty too.
I sat by none other than Mike from Seattle, not his exact forum handle but close. We were nicely in second row, stage Pettibone, and truly row one was almost deserted all the way across. He has been in that cabin he once mentioned in Forum, no wireless access (so give him hell tony). Nice family of wife and young daughter too (she really perked up during “Out of Touch”). I didn’t meet others, but I hope we can get some more postings about aspects of the Redding show. Meanwhile, on to Canada, where Mike among others will be there too.
stogerParticipantIt would seem that Paul is more on target here than the ever-impatient (and bean-spilling as to last night’s percussion surprise: geez) Tonyg. However. . .
1 Side of the Road (with a suited man-in-black-looking Pettibone only)
2 People Talkin’ (Lu can’t wait to introduce Brady Blades, doing so seconds after the boys’ walk-on–good to see Doug back in full throat on those two brief background vocal stints)
3 Drunken Angel (Blaze talk prior)
4 Lake Charles (much Clyde talk, down to the Saltines and Dixie beer and boudan (sp.?): Doug finds the pedal steel after discarding two other instruments
5 I Look at the World [ramped up from Youtube Big Sur to full instrumentation, no false starts, beautiful and still having a slight gospel strain to it, I’d say]
6 Born to Be Loved
7 Bitter Memories [or is it singular? No matter, it’s rockabillied and honkytonked up to satisfaction]
8 Out of Touch
9 Protection [new new–after, Lu announces she’s ready to go into studio with it: She plays the same guitar on it as the rockers to follow, and it’s fast-paced, using an “enemy of ___” lyrical hook to portray the frail yet willful narrator–limited words and verses, but effective repetition]
10 REal Live. . . {Brady is slow to start it, so Lu begins telling the P Westerberg background but is cut off, then saying “I’ll save that story for my memoirs”]
11 Come On [after, Lu notes front row empty seats and theorizes that there is either a bar out back (kind of) or that the “rich people” got first dibs on those (not really, media/handicap I find out later): a few people move on up, which pleases her]
12 Essence
13 Righteously
14 Ain’t My Cross to Bear
15 Changed the Locks
16 Joy
17 Honeybee18 Blessed [soundman James’ computer crashes early, but Lu plays through those few seconds]
19 Hard Time Killing…
20 For What It’s Worth
21 Get Right with God [tour man. Eric urges people up to dance]More soon
stogerParticipantHigh of 107 predicted, Tony: I thought this was the Pacific Northwest! Looking forward to Vancouver in that regard. . .
No pre-show visits to Nabokov’s former office area or readings with “Lolita” invoved, lefty–and quite the opposite to Ithaca’s climate.
The souvenir ticket for tonight has the artist’s first name only emboldened up top: no surname needed for this chick singer. I particularly appreciate this, after having made my NYC August ticketmaster purchases just earlier today. . . .

I think all the shows from tonight onward are full band.
Well, I looked back at TO’s earlier posting, and he somewhat enigmatically refers to tonight’s Redding show as “duo/trio.” I have reason to believe it will be light on the percussion tonight, but as for the bass rhythm, not sure. . .
I suspect those NYC shows will in fact be duos with Doug, not 100% sure. Amy Cook is also listed as opener for that run.
stogerParticipantGreetings, everyone, from the second sunniest city in America, “where the sun shines 88% of the time.” Do tell. I’d go for a 12% day, but at least there’s no Tennessee humidity in the air. . . .
Been to Heavenly Donuts twice already. More cultural/artistic narratives to follow. Could somebody who’s coming review and update any plans for drinks or dinner prior to show?

Ballads indeed. Despite the false start, “When I Look at the World” was lovely. Did anybody catch the word at the end of the phrase “I’ve been a total ___” near the beginning of the song? Sounds like “rat” (!) but I couldn’t tell for sure from youtube. That glory/story business is a great gospelish hook in the chorus.
stoger, my ears detect “Ive been a total wreck”
lw
Ha ha, guess I just yearned for some rodent imagery in a new Lu song. Clearly neither my ears nor my brain cells are up to par. Thanks to lwj and to Tom (also for the recommended reading).
What’s all this implication about grumpymama having ulterior motives re: a Lu concert?
stogerParticipantWavy Gravy???? Groovy. Jimmy LaFave put a radio outtake of a Woody Guthrie song, with Lu singing harmony, on his double album of such bits & pieces whose name I don’t remember. The song itself had the word “Oklahoma” in it, with lots of dust bowl imagery. Current brain cell count fails me again.
“On to Redding,” not a bad mantra for the other side of the stage either. Misread that as “Otis Redding” briefly. . .

Paul was practically giddy.
How does one get to Redding, Stoger? Stagecoach? Even from my place it looks impenetrable.
That word cost $5.00.
There’s an 11 p.m. overnight Greyhound out of downtown LA next Tuesday which gets you to Redding late morn of the show, with about 8 hours to spare before doors. Rough it man, rough it.
stogerParticipantThanks, Tony, and others. Let’s hope paulinlosangeles was counted among those in “good spirits.” Sounds like it.

“Boot scooter” indeed, west words, that “Bitter Memory.” Doug’s countrified break was mighty fine as is, sans rhythm section. “Lonesome sound” to be sure. Was the guy really decked out in green, or was that a mirage from the blog post photos?
Here’s hoping for these two + “Stowaway in Your Heart” in Redding and beyond, full band. To repeat the estimable tonyg’s question, did anyone go to the Wolf festival?
stogerParticipantAny real time reports or setlist?
stogerParticipant@paul_from_losangeles wrote:
Thanx, tonyg, for posting the setlist. I attended this show last night, and I’ll post a few observations.
1. Doug’s guitar work for this show was magnificent, especially on Pineola and Out of Touch. Duo shows with Lucinda and Doug are really special moments.
2. The outdoor venue was beautiful, with huge, wide, tall trees surrounding the stage, and colored stage-lights highlighting the trees.
3. The weather was surprisingly tranquil, for a June evening near the coast–no wind, no fog, just a dropping temperature from the 70’s to the 50’s–the temperature was well managed by the audience members, who applied their clothing layers like a hip commercial for North Face.
4. My one mild complaint: when a venue specifies no outside food or drinks, that usually means the venue plans to sell food and drink, and doesn’t want competition from the audience supplies. However, the library last night only sold beer and wine–no food. Fortunately, I had a granola bar in my pocket (to eat after my wine), but it seemed like a poor policy. A few experienced souls did have plastic containers with food, and no one seemed to check.
5. If you attend another show at this venue, bring a flashlight. The experienced audience members did have flashlights. There are no lights at the portable outhouses, and the insides are totally dark after sunset. Also, the outside road has no street lights, so walking back to my parked rental car on the dark road with no traffic and no lights was a bit creepy.
Perhaps, I’ll add more later. For now, time to fight for breakfast at Embassy Suites in Seaside, near Monterey.
Excellent work, you two. I’d love some elaboration on the nature of “Bitter Memory” and “When I Look at the World,”–and assume both are going to adapt well to a rhythm section format. Guess that backing was needed for “Crescent City” to come off. . .
Paul, don’t forget candles and your Whole Food purchases next time. And enjoy that weather vicariously for me; it hit 103 in west TN yesterday.
stogerParticipantGood find, lwj. I’m a bit aware of AC, though one might prefer Elizabeth as far as that surname goes, with crackerjack band members like Bones Hillman and Tim Carroll behind her. Still, should be a sweet run. . .

And yes there will be shows announced shortly in Portland, Maine (8/2) Northampton (8/4) and Ridgefield, CT (8/5)
Tom…Ridgefield Playhouse has an “Echoes of Sinatra” show booked on 8/5. Is the show somewhere else in Ridgefield CT?
Seems a relatively small town to boast dueling shows of this caliber–perhaps Lu Herself in a Baby Blue Eyes incarnation?
stogerParticipantGodspeed twice over. Hipness and oral cavity pain are not mutually exclusive.

Sounds like you have an attitude problem?
Nope, just referencing some pretty firsthand feedback from the top regarding a prior Northampton show. But I myself have enjoyed both shows in that town which I have attended.
