Man, all you guys are good. Champ Hood also died relatively young, of cancer I think. The lone survivor of Uncle Walt’s Band (we could compromise and call it The Uncle Waltz Band) is David Ball, who had some major label solo success and hits like “Thinking Problem” on the country charts. I will try to reactivate my forum thread under Singer-Songwriters where I talk about meeting him last year at the Jackson TN VFW Post (!) and quizzing him about Lucinda.

I believe it’s Champ Hood’s nephew who fronts a band called The Des Champs Band, which put several covers of Ball, Hyatt, and Hood songs on the one record of theirs I have. Warren Hood, who I believe is a cousin and thus maybe the son of Champ himself, plays out a lot in Austin and has had some success in that scene.

I have a 20-song re-release somewhere of Uncle Walt’s Band itself, and truly roughly one third of the songs were penned by each band member. And I should dig out a bootleg early 80’s radio show where Walter and Champ, but not David, back Lucinda.

Tom, I’d love to hear of other LU memories of these guys, if she’s so inclined to reflect.

So that’s it -what a week in Mpls. By my count 68 different songs over the five nights. Just did some quick little number -songs were played from every Lu album and here is how it breaks down:
    Ramblin’ – 2
    Happy Woman – 2
    Rough Trade – 8
    Sweet Old World – 4
    Car Wheels – 11
    Essence – 6
    World Without Tears- 9
    West – 1
    Little Honey – 4
    Blessed – 6
    New songs- 6
Covers by Eddy Arnold (Hank Cochran), Memphis Minnie, Skip James, Bob Dylan, Mattie Delaney, Hank Williams, Lil’ Son Jackson, Howlin Wolf (2), Slim Dunlap, ZZ Top

Almost as interesting was wasn’t played -here are a few: Sweet Old World (although Ben Kyle asked Lu if he could do it on Weds, which he did), Still I Long For Your Kiss, Out Of Touch, Steal Your Love, Are You Alright?, West, Righteously & Buttercup.

Now it’s time to get going on the next chapter.

thanks for the tally, Tom! As for the “almost as interesting…” part, I believe “West” is the only one on that list which was at least played earlier on this leg; perhaps “Out of Touch” was once too?

    Night 4 setlist:
Lots of highlights -great to hear Big Red Sun again after a long hiatus. Memphis Pearl and I Don’t Know How You’re Livin’ were also stellar. How You’re Livin was preceded about Lu talking about the song being about her brother. Everything Has Changed w/ Lily Mae was simply spinee tingling.

    Can’t Let Go
    Big Red Sun Blues
    Car Wheels
    World Without Tears
    Memphis Pearl

    Tears Of Joy

The same L Mae who got 2-3 minutes of Grammy on-camera time in a white dress behind Jack White, I presume?

And she flattened her chest, curled her hair, and shucked the contact lenses too–oops, I guess that’s Mickey or Rex.

Yes, “I Need Protection” (or “Protection,” as Lu introduced it a time or two) has been played maybe 3-4 times in my hearing, though that Dakota version is a nice reprise. And the title city song for night six, my my.

Lafayette, can I link to one place with all the Dakota set lists?

I envy you guys this show; I knew Shannon headed out there for Grammy week (for that matter, Lillie Mae Rische of the Kenneth Brian Band/Jack White girl band was in the area too I think). Jedd Hughes has done a fine version of Gram Parsons’ “Luxury Liner” and was (is?) part of the Shilah Morrow-Bryson Jones Sin City stable.

My understanding is that Lucinda and Tom were going to Arkansas after the MN gigs, as opposed to directly back to LA.

    Question:

Wake Up Call is listed in set list. Is this correct title? Cover? The only info I can find is a Maroon 5 song? 😳

Yeah, we need to clarify “Wake Up Call”–perchance the eighth new original song played out live by Lu?!?!?!? And “Goodbye Joe” is “Jambalaya,” no? Surely not the early Lu original with the phrase “Goodbye Bill”?

Thanks, for the research, lafayette: the Dakota nights are apt to get blended and blurred. Two more shows to go there? Three?

    1. The Set List.
If you’re going to see Lucinda Williams at the Dakota, arrive on time to catch the Kenneth Brian Band.
Well, it’s a stripped down version of these Alabama Southern rockers. But Brian, who has a ZZ Top starter kit beard and a suitable Billy Gibbons flair with the electric guitar, is a talented dude in a Jamey Johnson kind of alt-country way. Moreover, Brian and members of his band, including fiddler Lillie Mae Rische, sit in with Lucinda at various points, adding much needed depth and dynamics.
As for Lucinda, her Friday set was a bit disappointing, as my review indicated. She chatted more about the business of music instead of the creating of it. And her set list left something to be desired. (Personally, I always long for “Righteously.”)
Here is what she and Doug Pettibone played on Friday:
Lake Charles/ Side of the Road/ People Talkin’/ The Night’s Too Long/ Jackson/ Crescent City/ Bus to Baton Rouge/ When I Look at the World (new song)/ Make the World Go Away (Hank Cochran)/ Jailhouse Tears/ Concrete & Barbed Wire/ Pineola/ Something Wicked This Way Comes (new)/ Hard Time Killing Floor Blues (Skip James)/ Real Live Bleeding Fingers & Broken Guitar Strings/ Change the Locks (Tom Petty)/ Joy ENCORE Nothin in Ramblin (Memphis Minnie)/ Jambalaya (Hank Williams)/ Get Right with God (with four members of Kenneth Brian Band

Amy and Shannon are currently playing the South Central USA with another segment of the “Chasing the Ghost” tour. For these dates, Will Sexton is playing guitar instead of Richard Mache. I attended their show last night (Wednesday, Jan. 30) at the Saxon Pub on South Lamar Blvd. in Austin, TX (a welcome distance from downtown and the infamous BlackHeart Bar). For this Austin show only, Charlie Sexton joined his brother and the band on-stage for a few songs.

An excellent show, with the Saxon filled with an adult audience of respectful music listeners–all the talkers, hipsters, thieves, and cellphone addicts were exiled to downtown.

But did you score another free drink on the band’s tab this time, Paul, a la Dallas?

No improvised leisure suits on stage I guess, without the Mache presence.

Charlie Sexton produced Shannon’s record Geronimo, along with other discs we might be familiar with here.

Oh my God, haven ‘t heard “Come to me Baby” in years! Could “I Asked for Water [He Gave Me Gasoline]” be far in the future?
