JF once opened for Lu at Blue Door Okie City, though I’ve never seen him live. I must check out his record. And Tony, who ISN”T a pal’o’yourn?

Sorry you feel that way, stoger – I posted this mainly in light of the fact that the two have collaborated on at least two album releases in the past (i.e., Rattlin Bones and Wreck and Ruin, both of which I own I might add). Although one could assume that this “separation” might not impact that professional relationship, given the very real chance that it might, I posted the link… 😛

Unfortunate wording on my part, tntracy. You yourself are anything but a gossip-mongerer; more than one singer/songwriter you have introduced to me in this thread have I followed up on. So keep posting, and I agree with Drunken Angel that we will hope to see these two together on stage again in the future.

P.S. I took the liberty of changing the name of this thread to simply “Kasey Chambers”, removing “USA Tour: August, 2012”, as it has evolved to a more generic informational thread about her…

    Ah. I misread tonyg’s post – when he said “…they played her selections…”, I read it as “…she played her selections…”. Mea culpa… 😳

    Tom

Mea culpa, aussi, Tnt: I not only interpreted “her selections” as her live performances; when that theorem was shot down, I interpreted it as her own songs played over house PA. But in the spirit of that Starbucks Artist Picks series (shouldn’t name that brand in a post about an independent business/record store I guess), I suppose it was her favorite covers, performed by their composers. Hey, Junior Kimbrough blasting the blues in west HOllywood ain’t bad.

How many Forum members braved the line and pumped flesh, a la that lucky greenAlligatorshirted lad?

For a [considerably more mundane] account of Record Store Day among Hoosiers, see my recent post in the “Records” thread.

When in Lafayette (“I’ll be yours. . .”) on a Saturday morn with only two hours to drive until Saturday’s complementary show (Fort Wayne), what to do but search the yellow pages (old school) and ferret out the likeliest prospect. In this case, one Von Records, hard by the Purdue campus across the Wabash River–which turned out to be a whole unified retail block: Von Books, Von Cards, Von Incense, etc. I could never figure out if it was Gay Pride Day, Boilermakers home baseball day, or just a major university campus out on the weekend. Things were lively, but I wended my way through the downtown west Lafayette costumed street festivities and purchased a Waco Bros-Paul Burch 2012 collaboration and also a Hank Williams disc. A propos of the latter, the sales clerk reacted, so since I had seen zero Lu records under folk, country, or pop/rock, I made the mistake of inquiring. “How is she classified?” the young lady wanted to know, which of course what I was essentially asking her. After a few licks at the computer, she returned to say, “You might check just under the letter W, for artists who aren’t as well known.” I bit down hard on that one. The words “That’s what three Grammys gets you” did escape my lips, despite myself. But Von seemed to be the lone game in town, and there were local songstresses performing for Record Store Day. Oh, the whole purpose of this jaunt was for Amy LaVere, and her drummer had mentioned something about them possibly showing up at a store, but not on my watch. At any rate, wishing I had gone the Amoeba route, but here’s hoping some on Forum did…

Whoo baby: she’ll love inclusion in this list, fresh off her Steve Cropper tribute album. I’ve heard another artist or two play it live, but let’s not forget writer Randy Weeks’ version on his record Madeline: mighty fine.

I didn’t know Amy had a left-brain engineering side, LWJ, but it’s possible. Her parallel acting career is what you really want to bone up on, including (as I have noted in this thread) a bit part in Walk the Line as Wanda Jackson. She told me she had multiple scenes with Reese Witherspoon which ended up on the cutting room floor. Amy has also been on crew (and maybe acted in) films by the Memphis turned New York City director Ira Sachs, et. al.

Reckon Lefty will join you upstate?

I just wanted to alert you upstate/north-of-border folks to the entertainment in your area next Wed. the 24th and Thur. the 25th respectively: Amy LaVere. I’ll let my past comments here (and in the McNally-LaVere thread) speak for themselves, but LEFTY and LWJETTA: take note.

Such non-Atlantic, non-Northern names: The Abilene Bar & Lounge in Rochester, the Sportsmen’s Tavern in Buffalo. I can see the old Lefthander on a bar stool in either place, despite their vaguely Wild West labels. Wouldn’t mind wetting my whistle in either joint, but it’s not in the cards for me this tour. Guys, plan to help me live out her show vicariously, will you?

Whew: strange bedfellows, in one sense, but I like it. No mention of Eric Schermerhorn? Val McCallum? Et. al? Which one of these gents would YOU pick to accompany you on a cruise, if asked as a singer-songwriter yourself? [Guess I better leave it there]

Ahem indeed, Tony G. I see you neglected to list the amateur talent interspersed between some of the pro acts, but well done–I wouldn’t have remembered all the CSN tunes, including the “Carry Me” one I wasn’t familiar with (as opposed to “Carry On,” not done).

Good to see Tony, Tony’s bro-in-law from Mass., Grumpy M, soundman Kevin, engineer Eric L (he of “oven” fame), and of course Tom Overby himself.

Lu was introduced as a “poet” of the American songbook, promptly said how moved she was by meeting some of the folks associated with the autism cause earlier, mentioned soundcheck and interviews also.

Jonathan Wilson played guitar with her, Stills himself on other side. “Joy” was fine, “For What It’s Worth” superb; Stills was passive vocally for most of it, but caught fire and hit some harmony highs with Lu toward the end of it, ultimately launching guitar picks crowdward.

Jack Black was emcee, and after Lu, he said “motherlovin’ Lucinda Williams” and attempted some metaphorical language involving Texas, Louisiana, coffee, and tea which didn’t quite mesh.

This kid Nic Guzman did a killer “Almost Cut My Hair” with the house band; that might be the only performer I would add to Tony’s list.

Ryan A was OUTTA THERE after his two (fine) acoustic tunes.

Looking forward to T’s comments, then will add more.

And/or might we get Crosby & Williams on “Return of the Grievous Angel?”

Anyone going to see Richard Thompson at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville sat. night? Should be a great show.

    Kelly

Hope you went, Kelly. Being in east TN for a long weekend, I chose the Orange Peel of Asheville, NC (former Lu venue) to see the Electric trio, replete with ex-Love Band bassist and Live at the Fillmore co-producer Taras Produniak (though he now stands stage left these days). I wonder if the Nashville setlist was the same, for it was a brilliant arrangement in Ashe, to my mind. To wit, fifteen songs in the main set: five from the new record, five from the archives, as far back as the 70’s (some unknown to me), and five (consecutive!) from Shoot OUt the Lights! I’d never heard him play any from that Richard-Linda record the other two times I had seen him. In the encore, he returned solo for two from Rumor and Sigh (“God Loves a Drunk” & “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”, the latter almost as good as his Ryman solo take on it from last fall’s Americana Awards show). The band came back for three finales: a cover, another new one, and “Tear-Stained Letter.” Brilliant brilliant brilliant. And Taras looks a healthy, happy man–though only marginally impressed by my Doug-Lu t-shirt. He’s on Doug’s new record, and the Mojo Monkeys still live, from time to time at least.
