OvertimeI’m typing this on a smartphone, a report may follow
Love to hear your comments and what Lu said, exile–“Right in Time” is a nice surprise, though the encore seems aborted, rushed.
stogerParticipantI see you aced Typing I when it was required in ninth grade back in our era, Paul.
After song three, Lu said “I get nervous when it’s so quiet.” Approximately 1/89th of the audience then responded by a murmur.
In addition to “preacher-humpin’,” Lu called “Something Wicked” a “Pentecostal end-times apocalyptic” tune. After it, she referenced her two Methodist grandfathers and her upbringing in college towns, “all mixed in there together.”
How about three in a row from the Sweet Old World record?
Much talk of the West Memphis 3 in front of “Joy.” Some in the crowd knew of that.
Much talk of Nick Drake’s producer Joe Boyd.
In front of the Skip James: “I still don’t know the difference between a repression (sic) and a depression.”
Good to see Paul and my friends Geoff and Rebecca. Tennessee beckons 👿 Carry on, someone.

Good report Stoger, as always. A small mention about the great “good bye” that fans who waited at the venue’s door give her after a long sign session.
They were clapping hard till she disappear down the street into the car…our last view was her sweetie smile… 😀Indeed it was a fond farewell, us hugging the pavement across the street chatting away with Tom to the point that Eric had to scream his name to get him to be the last passenger into the getaway car; even Lu was settled in before he was. Much mirth then disappeared into the night, for their 20-hour drive to Londontown.

stoger, mighty fine reporting.
Can you shed a little light on this please ?
From Lucinda’s facebook there were a couple of blurry pictures with the caption ” Getting ready to go on stage ” and an impromtu Happy Dance took place. Lu and ? in the photos.thanks.
lwj
I took a quick look, lwj, but I’m afraid that even I am not privy to backstage, pre-show antics. Don’t you figure it’s the back of Doug’s head, since he is a guy who might be next to her when the time to go on stage comes? I have no other theory. Nice to see the mood was festive pre-“Can’t Let Go” in Barcelona, because it was not that way in Bilbao. . . .
stogerParticipant1 Can’t Let Go
2 Car Wheels
3 Crescent City
4 Something About What Happens… (storm warnings stir the air with “It sounds boomy up here”)
5 Greenville (Lu shouts out, “Nick, will you turn the sound down on my guitar?”)
6 When I Look at the World (tentative smiles)
7 West (Before which Lu says things like “I feel disconnected up here” and “I’m not the soundman I’m the artist” and “This is ruining my show”)
8 Drunken Angel
9 Seeing Black (halfway through, Lu takes off the instrument, saying “I can’t play on this because I suck”–during the second version of the song, with twoperson instrumentation, DAvid flails wildly at soundman to turn him down, also a local staffer bounds on to the stage to consult with tour manager ERic, presumably about the fate of the show at large)
10 Sweet Side (guitarless Lu)
ERIC WALKS OUT AND GIVES LU A HUG.
11 Those Three Days
12 REal Live Bleeding. . . (Lu is smiling and speaking of extra songs to make up for earlier lapses, notes that the songs through here are all about bad boys, with her memoir to come no longer protecting names, etc. .. .)
13 Something Wicked…
14 Hard Time Killing…
15 Come On
16 Changed the Locks
17 Essence (slower version, working wonderfully in this format)
18 Joy (Lu happily opines about the colloquial Southern “y’all” before this song)
19 Honeybee20 Trying to gEt to Heaven
21 Blessed
22 Get Right with God (LU attempts a pro-Basque separatism speech prior, after having learned the Basque words for thank you and after telling us she now feels “connected.” The speech compares somehow the Basques with American INdependence Day and is going nowhere quickly with the crowd until Lu switches things to a generic spiel about identity and freedom, then has the sense to go ahead and start the song. Meanwhile, her sentiments have bade “bigsubi” on my right flank to yell out “Catalonia Rules”–to even less effect among this crowd.)Shout-outs to towanda and to the two “Boston girls”–most of all to my amigos Mercedes and Victor, the pride of Galicia and Catalonia respectively!
Ask me more questions here.

Great report. Sounds like you are having a good time.
TonyG, awake and posting at 8:24 Pacific time on a weekend? Pleasantly shocking. It´s happy hour here, big boy.

Hi, there
This will be my 3rd Lucinda Williams concert after London (2007) and Bilbao (2009) I’m really thrilled. I’ve been listenting to “Blessed” for the last months continuously. I could not change it when I was driving and it was my only cd. It has calmed me down when I needed it. Really. I have just passed by a biliary vesicle / gallbladder operation and my nearly 90 years-old mother is in bed all day … I firmly believe that we all need to be “Blessed”. Yes, I do.
I’ll be wearing my San Antonio’s hat again tonight because I know Lucinda can see it from the stage and hope she’ll like it.
I believe all the tickets are practically sold out. The main local newspaper published a two page article yesterday in their weekend activities magazine.
I’ll also have the chance to speak a few words about the concert on the radio this morning just before 1 PM. Everything will help to be a success tonight.Towanda
I remember you from 2009, Towanda, also your hat. You graciously got me on “guest list” for Museo Bilbao next day. See you up front in a few hours!
stogerParticipantAw shucks, Lafayette. Currently listening to the Kenneth Brian Band over breakfast in Calella, north of Barcelona. . . Multiple Forum members have opened their basements, guest rooms, and couches to me–but never before have I awakened on tour to a view of the Mediterranean Sea.

…looking forward to see many friends tonight in BARTS venue !!!…
Count me among them, bigsubi.
stogerParticipantLWJ, Matt is nominally head of merch, but he has a lot of loading in/loading out on-stage duties. Each night he has an underling [wo]manning the table, varying degrees of multi-linguality and attractiveness. My favorite was Zurich, where there were copies of Blessed–“special Swiss edition,” the young lady said. It took me a minute to see that she meant the alternate cover with the boy in a Swiss flag t-shirt. In fact, there were no CD´s, only t-shirts, in Brussels, and I think in Santiago too. I believe there was a distribution snafu, some cost-prohibitive factor in shipping. Among the shirts is a variation on the Doug and Lu one–a threesome including David now! Discreetly, the young Swiss woman took a gander at my midsection and said, in lovely broken English, “medium only, unfortunately for you.” Touche.
Yes, the spirit of St. James lives in this town, bigsubi. I´m only four hours away from my overnight coach to Madrid. . . .

6 When I Look at the World
7 I Envy the Wind [the name “Leila Downs” doesn’t draw a crowd reaction, but this song does, a hushed appreciation from the get-go]
8 Born to Be Loved
9 I Lost It [Lu attempts a translation of the title, with little crowd reaction]
10 Drunken Angel
11 Something Wicked. . . [somehow the phrase “preacher-humpin'” just doesn’t quite resonate to Galician audiences]

13 Real Live Bleeding…[tour debut?]

21 Get Right with GodLu pronounced the crowd one of the best on the tour, and truly it was a spirited bunch–if a bit non-conversant with the Southern Gothic strains of Lucinda. For a show that supposedly wasn’t selling too well in advance, the outcome seemed fine–pretty packed from the soundboard on up. I believe there was one less table on the floor than pictured on lwj’s post. Like Zurich, there was no opener, though finally the shows seem to be starting at a reasonable Lu hour (22:00). Good to see guitar tech Jason and his wife at Ristorante La Comida across the alley prior to show. A new Nick is the sound guy, haven’t chatted with him yet. Matt Blake, Doug, David, Tom, Eric, Lu and bus driver (Carl?): that’s it, folks. They say the bus is the best ever, so maybe lwj can somehow nab a pic of said Continental Metal Firecracker. I hear they are meeting up with Eilen Jewell in Madrid on the mutual off day today, so be safe everyone. Until the Joy Eslava.. .

“Everything but the Truth” it says LW’s song is. I suggest we need the full story. 🙂
I can provide only the partial story, but it seems those four words constituted one of the lone Ranger´s mottos to live by. Perhaps TO can enlighten us further.
stogerParticipantYes, with another festival I believe in the Cincy (i.e., lafayette) area the next weekend, capped by Bristol Rhythm and Roots fest on Friday the 20th.
