It was a splendid evening of talk and music at the Grammy Museum in beautiful downtown L.A. There is a 200 seat theater inside the museum where they hold these functions,; this one is part of a series called “The Drop” when artists come in to plug their new record. Lu was interviewed onstage for about 45 minutes about her early life, her parents, her musical upbringing and influences, and a lot about the new record. Mercifully there were no questions about Gurf Morlix. Lu was in rare form; relaxed and enjoying the interview in a very entertaining way. She could have her own talk show I think. She described her songwriting process and how she feels she is at her most prolific at 61, unlike pop stars who enjoy early success and fizzle out.

She opened with Compassion and then Doug joined her for the rest of the show on electric guitar. No CD signing after.

The website was out in force with myself, Grumpymama, and Paul From Los Angeles, and Tom. Fun was had. I broke my rule about going out on a weeknight for the 100th time and did not spring out of bed full of vim and vigor at 5:30 am after getting home at 11 pm. Who said “it’s better to burn out than it is to rust”?

Great to see a large local cast of characters out to see Lu on her home court: Lu and Tom’s friends Peggy and Robert, Doug and his son Ryan, and Doug’s friend Rob who did the artwork for his new CD “Gone”.

Thanks to all who represented the Forum, and to Tony who wrote it up. I saw something similar in Austin by way of radio interview on the UT campus, but this sounds superior, with a mini-set involved. Nice that Doug was along, and had she played “Burning Bridges,” there might have been a Morlix question or two on someone’s lips afterward.

also, I believe San Diego singer-songwriter Sara Petite was present.

I don’t suppose we have a setlist for this one either.

“… her only Oregon performance of the year!”

I guess if you don’t count the Oregon Zoo just a couple months ago for starters.
    I hope they don’t mean next year….

Besides that, seems a shame to travel all the way to Portland and not have perform a regular show there and/or Seattle…

There I go getting greedy…. But there does seem to perhaps be a little time in the schedule.[/quote]

I guess that wording rules out any New Year’s Eve bashes in greater Coos Bay, Mike–I hear the town rocks out on such occasions. Work that I-5 corridor, will you?

Suddenly not feeling quite so super exclusive and special.. 🙄

    We’ll that’s over…
TWO Lucinda concerts in the next few days..!!!

Oh, my Lu acquaintance Christina from the Bay Area also got the good word–the third winner, as it were. But her partner Tom hasn’t heard yet, proving definitively that Slim’s isn’t throwing freebies at any old prose stylist.

Viv, thanks so much for the offer, but I also learned today that my essay , including pic ; ) enabled me the opportunity to pick up a pair. Similarly, if any forum member needs one, let me know and I would be happy to pass it along..

Arrived this evening and I am looking forward to the shows!

I didn’t even send in an essay, and was rewarded with a pair. . . *

    * just kidding, of course–I think, from their emails, that the prose styles of both mike and viv are first-rate.

it was a fun night. Lucinda played about 12 songs in all which was a surprise for an instore. The Rough Trade store has a large venue at the back so there is a full set up and plenty of room with a bar. She was joined by Stuart Mathis on guitar for most of the set, playing acoustic the plugging in for the last half of the show. Lucinda seemed really relaxed in front of the appreciative crowd. was a real intimate affair. She played a mix of the new album including Compassion, West Memphis, Something wicked this way comes, east side of town, Big mess and Cold day in hell as well as classics like Pineola, Change the Locks, Joy, Drunken Angel and encored with Honey Bee (can’t remember what else) .She made a few references to getting signed to Rough Trade when no one else would and sung a couple of songs from that album.
She hung around for 90 mins to sign the album and take photo’s and chat with fans along with Tom. Jesse Malin showed up to say hi…….all in all an amazing night, and got a great photo with Lu.

thanks so much, shootspeed. Not a shock that the author of “Lucinda” which he put on his Glitter in the Gutter album would make an appearance. Beats the Waterloo Austin in-store from last Jan. (with the fine Brad Rice) by about a half dozen tunes.

My copy arrived yesterday and Doug is called Pettinbone in the credits on “Walk On” in the lovely cd booklet.

Disappointing that the guitar credits are missing for the song “Protection”. The opening salvo and production are great 🙂

Ut oh where’s that grammarian police thread again?

Ha great narrative Tony: love it. And here I thought Mr. and Mrs. Mathis Sr. resided in the town of their son (Nashville) and that I had seen them maybe once at a show. Wife and daughter yes, now that I think about it. There are worse causes than wanting to stand by grumpymama up front & stage left. Rock on.

Thanks, you two. I knew it would be an early set, and a brief one. At least you got two new numbers. And I look forward to more from grumpytony on Paul’s hint of a “negative experience.”

Stog- Maybe it will change your perspective a little by letting you know that they were rushing like crazy to get it ready for Lu’s show – they emailed me the minute they passed the city inspection less than two weeks ago – that’s when Lu’s shoe became official and why it was confirmed very late. At one point it didn’t look like they were going to make it but they passionately wanted Lu’s show and got it done. They are actually closing again for 2-3 weeks to finish the rest of what they need to do for a real open. They did a cool thing getting open in time all the artist to play there this week – it was truly down to the wire so I don’t think I would pass judgement yet.

Yes, as I tried to say up front, I was grateful for you/”management” getting us into this event–and certainly don’t regret that it came together or that I was there. Truly, Lu played MInglewood Hall in Memphis the week it opened a few years back, and some of the same paint and varnish issues obtained. That night, the venue even gave away beer because they were yet unlicensed! Such a phenomenon might have eased my ire Sunday. And Thursday’s showcases there seemed to go OK, at least the 45 minutes I was there. Anyway, I do look forward to Lu X 3 in November at the new and improved (if still barely legal) City Winery Nash.

Thanks for the report, stoger! You forgot to note the backup dancers in the room. I do hope you weren’t too tired for Monday classes/meetings.

I’m sorry you were so annoyed by the night’s events.

I actually had someone hand my car keys to me, as I valet parked, and then realized on the drive home I forgot to pay for my parking and tip the attendants. I’m going to contact management and send payment and a tip.

Ah, yes, the cab/merlot blend. LOVE! I hope they sell bottles and I have someone to split it with on my return to the Music City.

Speaking of love, y’all can imagine my excitement when Amos stepped onto the stage to sit in with Lu! Two of my favorites, together again, even if for a song or two. Such a great night.

Hah: well done Lafayette. I was given the option of paying before or after, and I clearly messed that up by pre-paying.

We might combine this thread with lwj’s lone post on the Fallon show perhaps? The Big Apple greets our Lu, who seems to be jetting from coast to coast to Middle America to coast. You go girl!
