ooh baby, bigsubi–England and Spain both! I met Lu’s Spanish promoter (David maybe?) in Brussels, and he and Tom talked business about half a dozen or more Spain dates in July. Let’s do it!

So, if you speak croatian…

Maintaining a tradition of pre-Grammy shows, the historic Troubadour venue in West Hollywood hosted a salute and tribute to Glenn Frey, this past Saturday evening, Feb. 13. As usual, the show sold-out online in minutes, despite no confirmed knowledge of the actual performers.
The evening began with our friend, Shannon McNally, singing into a microphone at center stage. However, in a curious juxtaposition, Shannon was not the featured singer–despite being center stage, she sang support harmony to a Grammy nominee–an African-American man playing drums at rear stage, and singing lead vocals into his microphone by the drums. With my lack of knowledge of most Grammy nominees, I can’t report his name. I spoke with Shannon later, but I neglected to learn the singer’s name. (but see link below)
The show progressed with 1-song sets by musicians associated with Glenn Frey, and climaxed with Brandi Carlile and Bonnie Raitt singing “Peaceful Easy Feeling”, and the entire ensemble closing with “Take It Easy”.
Forum member grumpymama was in attendance, among many other famous music-types, who I didn’t know.
A pleasant 2.5 hours for a Saturday night, more enjoyable with my welcomed access to the upstairs sitting lounge.
Here is a link to a more factual review, by reporter Holly Gleason.
http://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=299736Well done, Paul. I’m curious as to whether you learned of this event via Shannon’s website, or elsewhere. At any rate, you seemed VIP. And “grumpymama” is as good a name as any big musician, for my money.

Thank you Vivian (and Tom)..
I don’t really do FB and this is excellent and much appreciated insights into the songs/album.I don’t [no need for Mike’s adverb] do FB at all, so thanks for all this publically, Viv.

Is La Grange a song title or a place? anyway, great report. I’ve seen her with many many band combos, more than I’ve seen her solo, but either way is fine. Do I understand she did two Hendrix back to back!!?!?!? I don’t recognize “Uncanny Dream” or “Devil in the Middle”: maybe new songs? “Red Hot Daddy” may not be the title of that one, or else it may be another new one.
La Grange was Anne’s cover of the ZZ Top tune. Her drummer did the Billy Gibbons growl. Yes, Machine Gun went into Voodoo Chile, sort of a medley or mash up. Uncanny Dream and Devil in the Middle are off of the new CD, Blue Sky Thinkin, and I’m sure I got the name Red Hot Daddy wrong (Long Tall Story, maybe?) — it’s the song she introduces as “the first song I ever wrote about a menage a tois.”
Yes, I should have recognized “Devil” and “Uncanny” as off an album I own. Good stuff!

I had the pleasure of seeing Anne play twice in the last two days, and I want to give a report as well as a plug for her house concert shows.
She played at a Mardi Gras party I hosted on Tuesday and, although it was sparsely attended, it being a Tuesday night, the guests loved her. (It didn’t even occur to me to have a Mardi Gras party on a day other than actual Mardi Gras! What is WRONG with people?) Anyway, she played the party at the Cat’s Cradle Back Room and then a gig at The Blue Note in Durham, NC the next night. It was great having a private show with Anne and, when split among several friends hosting the party, it was affordable. I would encourage anyone who lives within driving distance of Nashville (where she lives) to do this if they are a fan and looking for a guitar virtuoso for a special event. Oh, and she played La Grange for the first time ever! Also, she played both nights with a local drummer and bassist. It was the first time I’ve heard her with a backing band and it was fabulous. It does her music justice and really fills out the sound. Great to hear her play LOUD.
The Blue Note set list:
– Drivin Down Alvarado
– I Want You Back
– Uncanny Dream
– Dig Two Graves
– Things You Left Out in the Rain
– Spring Cleaning in the Wintertime
– Devil in the Middle
– Blues tune ==> Took My Baby Walking? PHENOMENAL
– Little White Cat
– Ballad of an Outlaw Woman
– Hellfire Raiser (shout out to Lucinda, who sang on the song)
– Shivers (shout out to Jim Lauderdale, who sang on the song; refers to him as “Mr. Americana”; great lyric => “the feeling I’ve been bought and sold”)
– Red Hot Daddy (?)
– Machine Gun/Voodoo Chile (SWOON)
– Crow Flies
– HangmanJust when I think I sometimes go overboard in pursuit of music, I meet a guy last night who built a stage in his backyard to host musicians for “PopUp House Concerts.” Yes! Anyway, in closing, Anne was lovely, incomparable and badass, as always. Viv

Yeah, shoot for Ash Wednesday next time.
stogerParticipantNice diversity among Lu’s three, plus Woody G at end: dang it, I have to set sail next winter!

“I Live My Life”! Great opener! Hope you are having fun!
wow, Fats and Hank on the high seas. And those of you who don’t know Laura Cantrell’s music should. Most notably, she found an old Lu song which even Lu never recorded (“Letter,” or maybe “Letters”) and put it on one of her own records a few years back. The song was written during and is about Lu’s NYC days.
stogerParticipantYou may have missed one or two, d, but you’re the only hope for us landlocked folk this week. Keep it coming.
stogerParticipantMay the jerseyites respond. I think there were kind of two separate cruises, back to back. Lu maybe plays every third day, something like that? Shorter sets?

Looks like reviewer used the printed setlist on the stage for their song titles, rather than what actually happened on the night, which deviated from that 🙂
Which to me is a disservice, an outrage. And let’s call h/h a “blogger” rather than a “reviewer.”

Another glowing review from Go Knoxville…
Lucinda Williams’ new album “The Ghosts of Highway 20” may be her best since “Car Wheels On a Gravel Road.”
“The Ghosts of Highway 20″ is not built for a cursory listen. It demands you take some time with it. In this case, it’s worth it.”http://www.knoxnews.com/entertainment/columnists/wayne-bledsoe/wayne-bledsoe-lucinda-williams-ghosts-of-highway-20-a-ride-worth-taking-2a565a6a-7997-587c-e053-0100–366889281.html
Yes, those bearded Tennesseeans sure do know how to turn a phrase, Mike. I think Highway 20 is a U.S. highway rather than an interstate, albeit four-lane for most or all of it. Not 100% sure. In Lucinda’s [childhood] day, lots of two lane traffic I imagine.

Looks like some of us missed a second encore…
http://www.brooklynbowl.com/blog/photos-reviews/ucinda-williams-delivers-the-most-perfect-of-pleasures/Holy Angus Young, I guess we did miss that! Tom, can you confirm? I guess I was just too excited about walking back to the North Greenwich tube station flanked by every retail franchise on six continents that I gave up too soon. Does this mean the DJ was silenced so the double encore could proceed? If so, you could say there were, in effect, seven sets that night: DJ/Buick 6/DJ/Lu main set/Lu first encore/DJ/Lu second encore.

Are you sure that Foolishness and Essence were not hte other way around?Cheers Mate!
Ha ha not sure at all! In any case, “Foolishness” had no added lyrics in Amsterdam, though I was half expecting a Trump and a JC at the least.
