Thanks, I hope conditions were better???
Yes–thanks to soundman Mark, who let me sit beside him throughout. I was privileged to chat with crew, band, etc. after too, meeting some Beantown area loyalists like [relatively] new fan Annie. And of course you will want to know my coat check strategy for night two: dump it next to the soundboard. Total cost for that service: $0.00.

Okay, thanks! This prompted me to check High Road and WOOT…Lu in Louisville on May 2 and Athens, GA on May 3.
Holy Pre-Derby Day, lafayette! You can pop over to Louisville and still be bright-eyed for Tuesday morning car pool duty. Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
stogerParticipantYou are welcome all. Paradise will never go down as my favorite venue; in fact, I wouldn’t mind an alternative named Purgatory, or even Hell-Inferno. The sound was crappy, at least under the “balcony” where I was on ground floor much of the evening. Soundman Mark Humphreys invited me to stand by him upstairs tonight, which I might take him up on. His own preference would have been to be based on the ground floor. And heaven forbid if a Paradise employee noted you stepping over (or even on) the line running across the back of the room a few feet from the wall. Feeling a little warm in Hell (I mean Paradise) and desiring to shed your winter coat? Why sure, just traverse the entire length of the room, pay your three bucks, and scale down your layering. I mean, the coat check could not be further from the one entryway, a strange arrangement indeed; unless you arrive early, just wear it or tie it around your waist, for you stand little chance of squeezing by people. Want to buy merch? Better wait until people leave for the evening, for that area is hard stage left and almost as far from the entryway as the coat check. Perhaps it was fairly focused and intent up near the stage, but pockets of chat characterize the better part of the sides and the back of the house. Ballads or rockers, no matter: there’s always someone making his/her voice known midsong.
But I’m not bitter. Lu was happy, and the song selection was superb, as you can tell. St. Bernard, say a prayer for me as I ascend tonight.

Yes, and the subject of Burning Bridges was called a “butthole,” plain and simple. Lu had some trouble in front of Can’t Let Go, saying she felt “disconnected,” but new monitors guy Matt fixed it. Seems like she said quite a bit up around When I Look at the World, but I can’t recall–you Dawn?

Great, Viv! I think it was Connie rather than Hayden who sang “Bitter M” on the show, not that I’m on a first name basis with the cast. And you do know specifically who “Burning B” is about, right?
I only know the people from the show Nashville to the extent they’ve appeared in People magazine, but Lu said that she didn’t think it was Connie who sang the song, but “the other one.” Hayden is the only other woman from the Nashville show that has appeared in People magazine, ergo, my conclusion 🙂
I do know whom Burning Bridges refers to (Lu jokingly said she could not mention his name lest she be sued). I always wonder if the people these types of songs are about know they are the inspiration. Especially the kiss-off songs, like Buttercup, Come On, Those Three Days, etc. etc.
p.s. I heard that someone at the show last night was wearing a Trump hat 😯 Awkward!
well, “beautiful people” show up at Wineries, so OK. When I see a Trump hat at Mercury Lounge or Irving Plaza, I’ll worry.
That Jailhouse Tears/Buttercup guy knows of his inspiration, guarantee you.
“Bitter Memories” is in the last episode of a season (one or two?), and I think it’s Connie in duet with that sideman she’s back in good with who sing it, but I could be wrong.

I’m hopping on an aeroplane tomorrow morning to join the next three nights, and I couldn’t be happier! Friends, wine and thou (the latter being Lu, of course). Also, I see that Laura Cantrell is opening on Thurs; I always look forward to discovering new (to me) musicians and music through Lu’s opening acts.
Oh my gosh, maybe she’ll perform the Lu song “Letters.”

stogerParticipantGood work, Mike. I hope I correct you gently, just as Dawn from Jersey corrected me gently once. Tonyg, on the other hand, . . . . How’s the weather in California, Big Boy?

Great reports! Must be spring break for you, stoger?
Whoa. Lucinda mentioned Amos from last week? BOOM! I could see that. I’ve watched several amazing versions she has performed, and I know Amos has covered “A Change Is Gonna Come” many times. I saw him perform it at a Farm Aid fundraiser. I wish I could have witnessed it live.
Carry on, road warriors. We’re living vicariously through you.
Spring break is next week, so Mike will take the lead this week. Boston and Toronto should be lovely by mid/late March.

Lu seemed to be in a great mood and called it a “great way to kick off” the multi night stand.
Definitely was. Looking forward to tonight! Thanks for this, Mike. The first encore song was actually “Doors of Heaven” from the new record. After it, Lu went on about “no one can call me a perfectionist anymore,” so maybe she was displeased with the live version? She didn’t seem unhappy, though. Amos Lee got a shout-out before tune 19, which was actually not “changed the locks” but “A Change’s Gonna Come” (sorry Mike). I think they did that one in Philly.
What can be said about “Can’t Close the Door on our Love”? My first live, treasured forever.

Well done Mr S. i drove up from Long Island as I was unable to get a seat for any of the City Winery shows. The venue, Buick 6 and Lucinda were absolutely wonderful. Lots of unintended but humorous moments too, from the dead mic at the start, to the acapella redo of the “old man Trump” verse during “I Ain’t Got no Home.” Hung out after the show near Lucinda’s tour bus with a few other concert goers talking music and got to meet Lucinda and get a hug and her autograph on my vinyl copy of “West.” Needless to say, the long trip was well worth it!
Good to hear, gbyee. Yeah, a hearty sarcastic “hello” emanated from Lu at the dead mike upon walk-out. I believe “If My Love could Kill” was a live debut for her, as she mentioned Alzheimers and her father. Also, after “Dust” she dressed down a Thirty tigers intern who was said to have left Miller’s name/credit off the liner notes, noting this intern “no longer works there.” Maybe ddinj can add some other comments: a good night.

Great concert that Tony recapped nicely..
Sean Rowe was really quite good as the opener, but I was a little disappointed he didn’t play the song Lu referred to as “probably the best cover of hers she had ever heard” in the Soldier’s Song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2XqhGeEpBQLu sounded phenomenal, as did the band. Her voice just keeps getting stronger.
Having Bill Frisell and Greg on stage for the night was a real treat and the accoustics were incredible in the hall. As Tony mentioned, Bill really seemed to be having a great time the whole evening.I had forgotten that there was yet another special guest by the time Charles Lloyd took the stage, but Wow, did he bring a new flavor to the already rich stew. Amazing versions of Joy and Still I Long for your kiss, and killer version of Faith & Grace.
The crowd pretty much stayed in their seats for the whole show (including encores) which kind of threw me.. So much so that I ended up leaning against the wall and standing after the first encore and waiting for others to join.. never happened. Also odd was when my phone was vibrating to alert me that Lucinda was on Periscope.. only to look up to see Tom filming. Nice to be in attendance when that happens for a change.
Also learned some new LA slang from the news media while I was there..
Apparently what we routinely call light rain and light wind or Monday and Tuesday in the NW, they call “StormDay1 and StormDay2”.. odd. They also explained the concept of rain “puddling” on the roads in great detail. Handy info.A huge thanks to Vivian for sending me her ticket which was several rows better than the one I came with. I tried to find someone who needed my extra ticket before the show but couldn’t find anyone looking. Would gladly have passed it along.. Good to see Grumpymama and Tony before the show.
Thanks for the addendum, Mike. As flash flood watches prevail in the MidSouth today, I chuckle at the LA weather slang. Relative to many places, southern California would seem to be nicely high, nicely dry.
