Received my tickets in the mail last week from the State Theatre, buffa. Not sure why it isn’t listed here… 😕
P.S. – Welcome to the Forum. 🙂
Holy Nabokov-at-Cornell, Lefty, you inspired me to consult High Road by way of cross reference: many NE/MidAtlantic late summer goodies, though damn these early-start semester calendars in my case. One of the shows is even in a city where I once saw the otherwise California-bound TonyG. Some serious planning is in store once I land back on American shores later this week.

Yes; you gear guy and craftsman Tony. I was thinking Toussant for some reason:

Great show at a festival in Eindhoven last night. Only didn’t like it that so many people left the venue during the show. Great accoustics, Lu her voice was outstanding and great guitar playing from her buddy:

I did appreciate the small “dancing” area in front of row one, though I chose to sit (yes, in row one). And from now on I address Stuart as “buddy,” for sure for sure.
I failed to mention that Matt Blake opened in London and will again in Paris. This is a man who doesn’t fool, obviously, with provincial capitals or second tier cities. Rome, Mr. Blake?
Not much to add to the listing. Perhaps because of curfew memories from the UK, Lu said little. Eleven and fourteen were granted requests, odd for our Lu these days. First time Essence was a duo–she claimed she liked it, and it did sound fine.
Lu as a non-headliner? I fled the premises quicker even than UnionCurfewChapel, but a fine evening. Very light outdoors at 21:20. Dirk D again at 20:00 sharp tonight.
stogerParticipantYeah, you rightly mention her intros and the hard 10:30 curfew, Andy. Despite a note being routed to her on stage between Bitter M and Drunken A (presumably to cut one song or at least hurry up the pace), Lu’s intro of Joy was a good 3 minutes, all you wanted to know about Betty LAVette and more. Also both Frank Stanford and Clyde Woodward got extended bios before their songs. At another point Lu segued wildly between mid 80’s Elektra Records exec Peter Philbin and Sissy Spacek’s performance as Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter–I think to make a point about onstage breakdowns.
No, the venue didn’t pull the plug a la that 10:30 Saratoga Winery debacle, nor did Lu rant against labor unions stifling her creativity (Beacon in NYC per 11 p.m. curfew), but the stage manager was not pleased there was even an encore at all, retreating to the back scowling when they walked back on about 28 after. Green-shirted security guy Andy, her right hand man, was cooler. The purpose of the curfew was not of course to urge us out the building doors, far from it. The houselights were up by the time Lu’s heels left the stage, then a blaring announcement about join us for drinks at the bar. So this is a venue which not only separates its sacred space (church) from its booze site upstairs, but one which enforces an arbitrary curfew in which guzzling pints is privileged over multiple encore tunes from a multiple Grammy winner. Ok, but some of us might honor both. I was out the door and buying beverages a block away by 10:37.

“seat nemesis,” indeed, stoger. That’s outrageous. As I recall, there was a similar interloper at the Ryman show (white-haired photographer dude). We could write a manifesto on concert etiquette.
Oh, that Ryman guy was like a Mensa/gifted/Rockefeller award winner compared to the Utrecht goofball. Thanks all for commenting.

Apparently, she has been covering “People Talkin'” for several years. This version from “Day of the Dead,” 9th ward in NOLA in 2011.

A segment of the audience started cheering immediately at the opening strains of “Those 3 Days.” In front of “If there’s a Heaven,” Lu waxed geneological, noting her “mixed Welsh and German”ancestry. This gave her an opportunity to describe her grandmother’s domestic details, rituals, and attire at great length; then she turned etymological, noting that the surname “Muller”(where’s the German umlaut on this Dutch keyboard when I need it?) was once in the family, yielding her father’s first name eventually. “Lake Charles”gave her a chance to compare Louisiana boudan to German sausage. As for the Guthrie song, she went on and on about Amos Lee’s theory (take note Lafayette) that the title “House of Earth” referenced a woman’s vagina. Except it took Lu some seconds to pronounce that word, after suggesting she maybe shouldn’t utter it–then counter suggesting that she should maybe use a less clinical term. The upshot seemed to be she felt freer to speak from stage in Europe. Trouble ensued though during ‘HOneybee,” which Lu said sounded awful in the monitors on stage. After a couple of false starts, she said “now people will say I’m moody, temperamental, a pain in the ass.” Stuart actually laughed at this, but Mama was not mirthful. She got through it, took a longer than usual pre-encore break, then smilingly nailed the final two covers and two originals.
Dirk (last name to come) from Hamburg was a great opener and will also open other 3 German shows. I bought his CD, and I saw him give one to Lu. He had the audience in stitches between numbers, but I could only catch “Lucinda” and later “Hello my name is Johnny Cash.” the songs were in English of course; though born in Hamburg and now back there, his formative years were spent (take note dd) in the state of New Jersey.
I ended up seated next to the promoter, who told me the Stones had played here, also the Beatles. Willie Nelson fairly recently. It wasn’t full, but it was respectable last night–and not as huge a capacity as you might think, given the names who’ve played it. And it really does function as a circus from December to March. I guess the Chippendales are the transition show (November).
Good to see Matt Blake, also guitar tech Justin, tour manager Chris, and Tom of course. Stuart rocked.
stogerParticipantAgreed. Well worth the four-hour round trip to attend this.

stogerParticipantI think JD’s comments suggest we should NOT assume SM will be on board next tour. I have no definite info to back this up, but hints and portents tell me Lu and Stu are semi-permanent, exclusive.

Yes, “music lover” and “railroad” swelled the ranks, plus myself, “Lafayette”, “vmorris” and “west words.” Lillie Mae Rische, Frank Rische, and Marla Booker were among the musicians in attendance–the former two had to cut out early to make their 10 a.m. set at Layla’s, well attended by some of the above. Wish Jersey had been there.
