Ha: I am nothing if not “common,” Paul, but I stayed the course and finagled a spot. Not at Lu’s feet, but not far from her trunk.
Applewood Road deserves a separate thread under Singer-Songwriters; I had met and heard Emily Barker before, also Amy Speace. Amber Rubarth completes the triumvirate, and it’s time to catch up by getting some or all of her eight solo records. Sublime stuff, outdoors and also indoors at city Winery the prior evening.
I guess you thought it was only 10 p.m. (Pacific) when Shannon started; I just couldn’t make it. But a fine week/weekend, about which more deserves to be written here.
stogerParticipantFor those who rue the words “no upcoming shows scheduled” on this Forum, here is a brief encourager. See also Tom’s latest words under the Evanston thread!
1 Ghosts of Highway 20 (solo)
2 Side of the Road (rest were duo, starting here)
3 Lake Charles
4 West Memphis
5 Bitter Memory
6 Stop Breakin’ Down
7 Doors of Heaven
8 Essence
9 JoyThe president of the AMA was literally at the feet of Lu throughout, sitting in front of the first standing “row” in tiny Grimey’s Record Store. I’m thinking a couple (maybe three) hundred total, hard to tell. I got a good angle stage right/back. Thanks to AMA and Grimey’s for this. Paul, maybe you can fill us in on some Australian alternate entertainment. What a week/weekend!

I watched the awards show, last night, all 3 1/2+ hours, via an NPR live stream, walking around the kitchen with my ipad and earphones while making dinner, cleaning up the mess, and various additional domestic chores. 😀
Incredible show, one amazing artist after another.
Lu didn’t make an appearance until the later in the evening. She accepted the President’s Award, honoring Woody Guthrie, on behalf and request of Norah Guthrie, who could not attend.
She performed an incredibly beautiful rendition of “Dust’ with Stuart Mathis and the house band, prior to announcing Artist of the Year.

all agreed, Lafayette, from my perch atop balcony Row M (not a bad seat in house). But Billy Bragg’s rendition of “Ain’t Got No Home…” was a bit underwhelming, I feel.

Aaargghh! I’m late to the game, but I want in! I’m going to try for all 3 nights, but definitely just standing for NYE – $250 is a lot to sit. I hope all tix didn’t go in the pre-sale.
Lafayette is just Thursday – Viv can’t make it at all 🙁 – Who else is going and which nights? Stoger, are you in for all 3 nights? I think our last NYE show precluded a great year, and wasn’t it at the Viper Room and not the Whiskey? Tony, Mike, and Paul – let’s do it! It’s the holidays! 🙂
Yes, I believe I got my West Hollywood clubs/geography mixed up. And all three nights, indeed.

If Farm Aid wasn’t on the 17th, I would gobble this ticket up. Beautiful venue for Lu. They mean it about the curfew, however!
Where we first “met,” right vm?
stogerParticipantI’m going, and I’m not even a Virgo!

Hmmm…. In-laws in nearby Elmhurst.
Would be a good time for a holiday visit!!Check out Amtrak’s Empire Builder, Mike.

So Sunset Blvd. is out, eh? 🙁
Whiskey Go Go was great that year, with Jack Shit opening. As much as you love winter, Tony, why not turn the year in the Windy City?
stogerParticipantAuld Lange Syne, Paul!!!!!! West Words, why not plan on your second turn-of-the-year hang-out with Lu & Co.? Who else is in? Chicagoland may be wintry, but who cares? The Northwestern U campus in Evanston is lovely.
stogerParticipantCan’t swing it, DD, but good to see you back online. Did you make any Eastern shows?

That would be, “Doors of Heaven”, right?
finally, the title, yes! And that “impromptu table” bit sounds new: cred to new TM Andrew there.
stogerParticipantGood work, Paul. that would be tough to guess #11, normally a transition from ballads to rockers. Not Are You Down or Steal My Love, I don’t guess. Great to note that “Seeing Black” got played!
stogerParticipantI call yours a professional report, ducknapped. Excellent asides on Butch, the three-finger signal, etc. I’ve seen Lu at Calvin and also outdoors near Northampton–not sure about Academy of Music. She once played a couple of blues covers extra there because there was a certain resistance to that strain of her catalogue by certain (dare I say it) female fans. But thanks for the report.

I love that Butch ventured out from the drum kit!
there’s one song he used to do so regularly for, “Well Well Well” maybe?
stogerParticipantOne by one, we seem to be on the verge of a comprehensive Ithaca setlist post. . . . NOrthampton anyone?
