Stoger; I was wondering about that myself. She’s playing in MI and then is scheduled to play in Greenfield the next night. Knowing that Lucinda does not like to fly, it may not be possible to make that gig. She’s being advertised as the headliner of the festival; hopefully if she can’t make it, the festival people will let people know that.

And I think Greenfield is even AFTERNOON rather than night. . .

So Lucinda is going from Boston to Michigan to western Mass. to Chicago in the space of a few days in mid-July? Some fancy navigating going on there. . . .

Thank you for the info, Inside Job. Great news about the headlining tour.

I second Tim’s kudos to “Inside Job.” Whether or not he wears a “suit” from day to day is of no interest to me; he seems to be the best member of Lu’s “management team” in awhile now. Though pit bulls may not care, I’m sure there will be several summer headlining shows in addition to the Mellencamp dates–which seem themselves to be more of a natural pairing than some sort of strategic career move. I for one applaud the summer schedule ahead.

Paul, See my note (15th and latest) on the Tour 2008 subject line. Apparently Humphrey’s has reverted to August–or at least I bought my ticket on that basis.

    😀

Yeah, Lefty, better “secondary” markets in that neck of the woods than “primary” ones ‘cross country which reserve the best seats for the beautiful people, e.g., Humphreys by the Bay, San Diego. Still, I’m pondering the trip. Does anyone find it curious that High Road Touring and Pollstar have this event listed for the first Thursday in September, while Ticketmaster and Humphrey’s own website are saying last Tuesday in August? Hmh. And what of Milwaukee SummerFest? Pre-Tim McGraw or [hopefully] separate from? Let’s hope that info on Lowell and Medford is accurate, however attained. Here’s to Live Lu in ’08. . . .

You got Flaming Lips from its frontman, who wrote the lyrics to “Marching the Hate Machines Into the Sun,” which Lucinda acknowledged and performed. “Virginia’s own” Devon Sproule (from Charlottesville) also had a UK-based pedal steel player for most of the songs; I look forward to her again tonight. Thanks: as much as I enjoy “definitive” wardrobe descriptions among members of Lu’s audiences, I enjoy setlists more. Fewer than 200 people? Let’s hope the UK can top that. Quelque francais en “Crescent City,” n’est pas?

Thanks, Tim, for posting the link to the review. It was fairly run-of-the-mill, but not inaccurate. Good to see the songbook being associated with the “meticulous” rather than with the cheating or the unprofessional. Louvin more than “joined her” for the encore; they did one of his songs plus “Get Right. . .” I think a different Fats Domino song, “Honeychild,” will be on this tribute release, rather than “I Live My Life.” And for my money, “Honeybee” wasn’t “loud” ENOUGH!

Well, I’m not getting much work done today at all: blessedly. Thanks “jewels”; apparently the Plug Sheffield event has in fact been moved to the 21st, per “Inside Job”‘s speculation. I was pleased to see I could buy a “Standing” ticket at a reasonable price, with minimal (read nonTicketBastard) surcharges. I assume we’re all 14-and-over on this site, so who’s purchasing early in the game? Also, it was amusing to note on the Plug Lucinda ticket page the statement “Please note artist will be on stage early.” What, Lucinda?!?!!?!!? If I interpreted things rightly, there’s to be a 15-minute gap between the opening of the Plug doors and our Lu’s emergence. I’d fly transatlantic and more to witness that. . . . Does “jewels” or anyone know about the layout and quality of this venue? Are there ever reserved seats or chairs at all? It sounds wonderful. Now to get on some air fare websites. . .

Thanks Paul, I know you monitor those European ticket outlets in similar ways to your stateside checks; no doubt you had your finger on the pulse of multiple dates before “Inside Job” (dare I use the initials JR instead) broke the news. Can you say Turkey Dinner in Dublin just prior to the tour finale. . . .

Thanks you three for your comments: wouldn’t have known about this so soon were it not for Lefty’s post. Indeed one can pick a seat on the venue’s website, and I opted for fifth row, i.e., closest one hundred buck perch, for the cause of poetry. Couldn’t see going a quarter of a grand, quite. I found myself wondering which black dot represents paul from los angeles: see you there? Now back to some troll-feeding (not really). . .

I’m kind of glad “Underwhelmed” is “done,” but I thought I would provide a few correctives nonetheless, hopefully in a rational, civil manner. I’m assuming this person also joined message boards such as the Old 97’s and Jessie Sykes to give one-off feedback for their sets. I mean, why bother when your motive for attending is either Ryan Adams or the atmosphere–both valid reasons for buying a ticket, I might add. Can you not maintain a kind of wise silence in lieu of the drivel posted here?

Quoting the lyrics of “are You Alright” in full? Why? And I believe I will go with the Robert Christgau verdict on this tune, rather than Underwhelmed’s verdict.

I heard no booing, certainly no “hissing” or “jabbering.” From my first row left perch, I could detect a certain restlessness immediately behind me and perhaps further up, but no booing at any point. People had been on hard bleacher seats for hours. Of course some of us felt Adams would be the penultimate act, Lucinda the finale. Given that that wasn’t so, fine, but show some respect to the build-up toward the headliner.
An “hour and a half” of your life wasted? Come on.

“Nearly everyone was bored,” hunh? Did you do an aural or person to person questionnaire up the many many tiers to the top of this beautiful venue? Why these generalizations, even conceding your own boredom. Sure the first six songs were subtle, ballad-like. The one coughing interruption was unfortunate, but didn’t mar things ultimately. Lucinda doesn’t need you to be “embarrassed” for her, let me assure you. After the transition song “Right in Time,” the rest of the set rocked, but I guess boredom had set in permanently by then.

Complaints about the lyric book and about Lucinda supposedly being wasted are almost useless without the context of her other shows, and the shows of other performers. I would say both in a relative and an absolute sense that these were non-issues at Red Rocks, no muffed lyrics, no slurred words–or very minimally, neglible.

Lucinda in her “heydey” was a more nervous performer, but unless you have some context to compare past and present, please don’t.

“Prepubescent” as an adjective to describe Lucinda’s lyrics? I think it might apply in another sense to the start of this posting stream. See Time magazine and the Grammy-award commmittees. Jesus.

I for one hope I am not a Lucinda right or wrong person. I can take criticism of her, have been known to dish it out. But like Pittsburgh, I felt the need to try to balance things out here. Thanks to others too.

Thanks, Paul, for your lucid account of a great evening, and thanks Rhon for pointing out something apparently inscrutable to the first poster. What’s this mania for expecting an “encore” at every show one attends, this expectation for the artist to follow the arena format to the letter? You got 18 songs, you got a straight-through 90-minute-plus set of diverse songs. Paul is right that eschewing the “normal break” shouldn’t be an affront to any audience member; “virtual encore” is a good way to put it. I must have missed the “diva moment” and the on-stage “tirade.” If Lucinda chooses to do “Side of the Road” solo and “Minneapolis” with Doug only on stage, shouldn’t we be grateful for these setlist departures, these beautiful introspective songs? So what that she didn’t walk off and then back on; yes, she usually does this, but often reemerges solo for “Passionate Kisses” or a similar tune. There was no band dissension, just a reconfiguration after song #13, another one before #15. The Thievery Corporation cover and the song (“Little Rock Star”) written only that week were worth any number of “thank you so much”-es or rote responses to uplifted cigarette lighters or whatever the hell the first poster was expecting from a concert format. Since when are “social skills” the disposative element in judging a performance’s worth? Lucinda interacted with the crowd quite a bit actually, her calling us “intelligent” being only one example–none of this contradicted the way the evening actually ended. Yes, the end seemed a bit abrupt after the Louvin duet, but the house lights coming on immediately afterwards cannot be laid at the door of Lucinda or any of the touring crew, should not be judged as indicative of her attitude. It’s a union town, blah blah blah. Again, if 18 songs from various periods of this great artist’s career didn’t suffice, then stay “stiffed” and revisit some of your top 50 supersociable live performing artists. I’ll shoot for 50 (+) more Lu’s.
