Whoo: may have created a monster (pleasant monster) with my advocacy of Susannah, a k a “the merchandise lady”–Lefty primed to meet her in Rochester, Tim blatantly looking ahead to more face time with her in Concord (or is it Burlington?). Still, I believe she deserves acknowledement here, for multiple reasons–and yes, it’s quite a nice gesture for Tom and Lucinda to discount the merch.

Tour debuts of “Metal Firecracker,” “Rarity,” and “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues,” I do believe.

I’ll stay out of the Doug fray, except to remind people that Lucinda deliberately broached the issue from the stage first night of tour, from Dallas. She was respectful of him, which it sounds like was true last night in her comments also. It was, as one poster said, bad taste for fans to shout out on that bandwagon. First inquiry maybe OK, but no need to shout out echoes of that query. Not that all fans would know of his absence by now, and certainly few people in Northampton would have been in Dallas or necessarily read the reports. But Lucinda probably felt she didn’t need to address the change in band night after night. It’s a done deal. Still, I understand some Forum members prefer him–and I do too, at certain moments and on a few songs.

Thanks for the shout-out to merch, Tim, and enjoy these upcoming New England shows.

Minor bruises, Lafayette, scarcely noticeable now, over a week later. All in the name of Lu fandom. . .

“Well Well Well” on the list? My my my. Perhaps if Metro North was not on strike, “paul_from_losangeles” can add to this with a complete setlist.

Great setlist and comments. I’ve always worked under the philosophy that cute girls and/or “enthusiastic chicks” trump my middle-aged frame and visage when setlists get passed out, so no worries there. Probably was Butch belting out the likes of “if I give my heart/do you promise/not to break it” during soundcheck: Flappy used to do a pretty mean “You’re my Prince Charming” himself, back in the day. Here’s hoping you’ll get a “sliver of midriff” from our frontwoman again tonight in Montclair, whether you are up front, down below, standing, seated, or faking a handicap to get a side angle.

Lefty, you making Montclair? Full report please, starting at merch table and radiating outward. . .

Excellent, Dave. “Those 3 Days” is one of my favorites too, hasn’t been done yet on this leg of the tour. So you’re not a big Angus Young fan, hunh? Me neither, but I think “It’s a Long Way. . .” works as closer–though “Little Rock Star,” “Angel,” and “Get Right with God” are all solid closers in different ways, to pick a few she has occasionally ended with this tour. And yeah, Bush’s absence in your town is duly noted.

Sweet indeed. Tour debuts I do believe of “Fruits,” “Disgusted,” “Greenville,” and maybe “Passionate Kisses” as well. Looking forward to that blog/fuller account. . .

Whoo hoo: Buick 6 dons different threads between sets, good to hear this emphasis on the boys’ sartorial splendor, from the Wash. Post. Thanks Ray. The Post’s Richard Harrington is the music critic to end all critics, don’t know this Klimek guy but it’s a lively review–if going off on tangents a bit much. Let’s hope the costuming and cosmetics of the frontwoman and band held up on night two. . . .

Indeed, Tom, both “Ventura” and “Over Time” from WWT were tour debuts, I do believe (thanks to TOverby again for setlists for shows I couldn’t make). And this flat-fee discount on merch seems about right, more than generous in fact–Lafayette and TN Tracy were involved in computations based on their ticket receipts, and all of us were wondering how this would be implemented. Flat amounts rather than percentages make Susannah’s life around the merch table that much more pleasant, I would imagine.

What better reason to join the Forum than this: thanks for the setlist! World Without Tears is prime here, as some recent shows Lu has played only 1-2 off it. Sellout? Did you buy any merch? Going again tonight, Sassbox?

Thanks to Tim for the link to the blog–sounds like Parker and the blogger (two different people I guess) had a great time of it. Sometimes I think there’s a tendency here to boast about aftershow access; I know I have probably been guilty of it myself, though I try to avoid same. At the same time, more power to those who get to encounter Lucinda up close and personal–it’s hard to begrudge anyone that. My “rough trade” comment still holds for some of the folks around me at Minglewood, but many others were true fans of course: didn’t mean to imply otherwise. And yes, Minglewood has about the most “ample” bathrooms of any venue I’ve been in–great hope for midtown Memphis there.

The concert at Minglewood was great, and the “rough trade” wasn’t that rough at all. However, I’m sorry that you guys missed Lucinda at the Poplar Lounge afterwards. It was a real treat to meet Lucinda in a small, intimate setting (aka, “dive”), and she was very gracious to all of her admirers. She sang only one song, but it was much appreciated by the 30 or so people in the bar. Thanks, Lucinda!

That sounds cool. What song did Lu sing?

    Tom

Yes, which title did she trot out? I’d like to know more about “The Poplar Lounge” too, as I’m not familiar with that establishment.

Great reports! So it wasn’t snowing yet by showtime? I’ll bet LW is having a hellish ride to DC is the storm.

    This from sunny So Cal.

The snow did not start here in N. Georgia until Sunday morning. All Saturday night it was just a light, cold rain & about 40 degrees.

And Lu & Co. should have gotten to the DC area ahead of the storm. The buses & truck pulled out of Atlanta at 1:30 AM – just a couple of hours after the show was over. The plan was to spend the off days there.
Yes, indeed: I would love to hear from someone in the crew as to how much playing in the snow got done today, maybe yesterday too!

Addendum: can’t believe I forgot to note that Lu partly attributed her Little Rock Star difficulties to a leak in the tour bus roof on the overnight drive from Arkansas: add that little nugget to my meterological ramblings!

Sweet. Tour premieres of “Jackson” and “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” plus Hank and Gentry. The image of geriatric types jumping up and boogying near show’s end warms the cackles of my [rapidly aging] heart. Let’s hope we’re all as limber a couple of decades from now. TN Tracy, see you soon.

Yeah, Tom, “numbskulls” is about right, better than my phrase “rough trade” really (though Lu has never been on the Numbskull record label: Ha!). As someone who lives more or less halfway between Nashville and Memphis, I try to stay neutral–but you’re right that that Nashville crowd, though not large, was better behaved and more attentive up front.

Nighthawk, enjoyed your thoughts on Memphis. I’ve seen Lu X 4 in that town, including the New Daisy with Ron Sexsmith in ’01, rowdy indeed though I was seated in balcony for that one, largely because of a disabled friend. Also, outdoors at some park in east Memphis, and then in an auditorium on the U of M campus with Carrie Rodriguez, sedate as all get out, almost pined for a Sorority Girl squeal or an elbow to my ribs there. Anyway, the fact that the Minglewood hall venue is directly across from the famed P & H cafe (where I didn’t fail to have a burger and beverage before the show) makes it promising, as you say, once the kinks are worked out. Midtown Memphis needs such a venue. And apparently the first show ever there, just last week, was one where fights broke out and Security had to ride herd on folks constantly. Compared to that, it was benign up front on Fat Tuesday. I too saw the “No Moshing” sign (wasn’t there a list of four or so no-nos?). And I do believe the “chunky” blonde and his redhead dancing date would be the very “kebass 17” who posted on this Forum day of Memphis show. We traded private messages but didn’t meet at the show. So Nighthawk and kebass, you picked wiser standing space than did I. Perhaps we will get a report from kebass here soon. And go Memphis: I do love the city, despite some of its musical “fans.”
