Paul Paul Paul: that last part of your parenthetical statement, after the dash, could be misinterpreted–or perhaps you have something further to tell us here. Seriously, thanks for digging this out. And I think there’s a “rule” about local merch vendors too, though I wouldn’t swear to it that I was told that.
stogerParticipantThanks, Tom: and no, I can’t better your own sterling account. Back to back Hank and Emmylou re: Gram “on the bus”–I was in a daze, with or without the Cabernet Lu was dishing out from the cupboard above the official bus sink. Agreed, it was a magic moment.

Simply sporting of you to suggest such, stoger!
A question for you: During the Rochester version of “Well,Well,Well,” Butch was tapping on what looked like a section of ventilator shaft. Was he playing that at other shows you attended?
I believe so, Leftyi: and some odd percussive instrumentation during the Buick 6 sets as well. the man’s a genius.
stogerParticipantI ain’t takin’ TOverby’s bait on that “drum roll please”/”blue balls” juxtaposition, considering the context of how I used the former phrase in one of my recent postings. Suffice to say, let’s see what I can do after my commitment in the States on July 10-11 to get over for some of the tour.
stogerParticipantImpressive alliteration in your latest, Lefty.
Beyond that, this is just filler to keep the Rochester thread going until, etc. . . . .
stogerParticipantWell, Ray, you can’t say this reviewer didn’t have a unifying motif: bespectacled, “librarian” Lu matches up with the lead paragraph on audience reading preferences. I too have turned a few pages while waiting Lu out in reserved seat venues, and even pulled out a book (not on Janis Ian, I trust) once with elbows on stage at a GA standing show. I don’t feel insulted by this audience characterization, though Lefty is right to note that some mindless chatter is the flipside of what the reviewer noticed.
Someone should cut and paste the finale for Butch’s scrapbook, to be sure.
P.S. No surcharge on the t-shirt I bought after the show. . .
stogerParticipantGreat add-ons, L: I too was in Abilene for a quickie pre-show. Good to hear the old southpaw has preserved his anonymity; I take it this “righty” was the same one doing call and response during “Tears of Joy?” And I don’t imagine it took too much strong-arming on Susannah’s part to send you home, send you across customs it sounds like, with that El Rey boxed set. Memorable night. . .
stogerParticipantI believe your setlist benefactor was either Gil or Nick, guitar techs extraordinnaire. Gil is the portlier of the two.
stogerParticipantGuys, the only reaction of mine during “Tears of Joy” was a silent bowing and scraping, knees to the floor, at the power of Eric Schermerhorn’s fantastic blues instrumental break prior to the final verse. Yes, quite a bit of chatter pervaded the house, Lefty. And if it makes you feel any better, Stoger could probably be described–by a young merch manager or anyone else–as “a greying guy with a black and black shirt.” Point is, you were looked for. Susannah told me she enjoyed meeting so many Lucinda fans during the tour, so no surprise that she might mix up some of them in her mind and her descriptions.
Envying the Aussies already. . .
stogerParticipantThanks for doing the heavy lifting, Lefty. Yes, song five was not dedicated to our friendly Forum administrator himself per se, but in effect it was: alright! In front of “Pineola,” Lucinda mentioned Lisa Powell, who knew of Frank Stanford and apparently released a record or two on an Austin label years back under a different last name. She was in the house. In front of “Side of the Road,” Lu tipped her hat to the Schramms, who recorded that song: “those of you who like underground, obscure details might be interested in this.” And yes, the false start in encore was smiled through, no sweat.
So Lefty. Tom Overby was looking for you after the show. We huddled on this, but all we had to go on was a physical description provided by [insert drum roll here] merch person Susannah. I’m going to simply quote it directly, without comment: “a balding guy in a pink and blue shirt.” That’s all I’m saying. Sorry we didn’t get to meet.
Many citizens of downtown Rochester seemed to be under the impression that last night was in fact St. patrick’s Day. Also, an incorrect time of doors at 6 was floating around; the line was huge by seven when they did indeed open. And there were seats! Yes, the ticket stub said “GA-seated,” but I had ordered last minute for will call and just assumed standing. Still, a fourth row near aisle angle did me right throughout, Schermerhorn side of stage.
Let’s pass the baton to the Aussies now. . . .
stogerParticipantGlad to see that heart rate stablilized long enough for a coherent setlist and good report, Tim. We appreciate your narratives.
stogerParticipantThanks, Tim, yes. Hopefully, an operative hotel computer tonight means a prompt setlist post. We appreciate it.

Thanks, Lefty. I told Susannah last night that I haven’t been to Burlington since I was 13. She just said, “so you haven’t been there for a real long time!” OUCH!!!
Hopefully I can post on the show tonight from the hotel there. I’m going to have to pass the baton off to you for the Rochester show. Take Care.Ut-oh, you set yourself up, Tim, with that line about teenagerdom. Ouch indeed. I’ve never been to Vermont, but I can relate to the [conscious or subconscious] masochism behind such a conversation-starter, having done a fair amount of babbling by the merch booth of late myself.
Great report, worthy of Paul Revere from those parts, I daresay. Tour debuts I think of “Bus to Baton Rouge,” “West,” and “World Without Tears.” Wonder what prompted her to return to the Buffalo Springfield “political” closer. At any rate, here’s hoping people’s second visit to Burlington tonight proves fruitful.
stogerParticipantNever count me out. Speaking of counts, who’s refereeing the merch table-area bout at intermission? Someone has to send me to a neutral corner when I give a “left[y]” hook to one of my rivals.

when I talked to Susannah in montclair, she was very impressed that stoger (only she used his real name) was her most frequent visitor at shows (she brought it up!) — but i’m sure lefty and tim can make an impression too!
Yes, Ray–but can I take the both of them in a three-way battle royal, if it comes to that?!?!?
