Hunh? I’m with you, TN Tracy: after reading the last half dozen posts in this stream, I’m unsure if the Lu account is “fake” or “real.” As someone said during the stream, really doesn’t matter. Soldier on, let’s, in a twit-free world.
stogerParticipantWell, I just got an e-mail in my PRIVATE account with the line “Lucinda Williams Wants You to Follow Her on Twitter.” Hmh. . . No big deal I guess, but curiously worded–and opening it did nothing to make me want to take the bite. “Hell no I won’t go” remains my mantra here, but someone’s trying. Any confessions, Lafayette?
stogerParticipantI agree Lefty; maybe P will come through with a setlist also, as the pics were grand. And thanks to you guys for my fan accolades in the other stream, but I will see only the last half-two thirds of the European shows. Still, I feel blessed to be able to do that.
So come on ye Danes and Teutons, titles please.
stogerParticipantNo more details, Parker, but thanks for this wonderful revelation. I assume it’s a label other than Smithsonian Folkways, right? I’ve combed many a musty vinyl bin, never found anything before the ’88 Rough Trade release. Speaking of that, I think early ’10 will bring us a reissue with bonus features there, since Lucinda owns the masters. We’ll see.
Hope you got that Wilco shirt laundered and ready for further use at the STeve Earle show. . .
stogerParticipantHour of need, indeed Lefty. Your nationality list was a bit out of order of tour there at the end, but nice finessing of the UK dates with separate Scottish and English listings, none of this generic UK or British language (the same issue is cropping up with Andy Murray at Wimbledon right now). Anyway, if I may humbly play the role of “American cousin” and be allowed to supplement the setlists, I will: but only during last half/two thirds of the tour. Until then, yes, please, others.
June 27, 2009 at 6:25 pm in reply to: Lucinda Williams in Bilbao, Spain, Tuesday 14 July, 2009 #40048stogerParticipantNice thoughts, Towanda. Lucinda’s manager Tom Overby reads this Forum, and comments about backing the show and offering publicity do not go unnoticed by him. It’s good to know posters are adorning the streets and walls in and around Bilbao. I’m sure the tour as a whole appreciates your role as “media woman” and your practical efforts–but also the way in which Lucinda has changed or reflected your identity through the years. You’re in for a treat on the 14th.
stogerParticipantThanks for the tip, DavidW; I looked at the seating chart the other day and it looked safely general admission up front, with only a few “orchestra” seats in red in the middle of the chart. But your “front row” comment caused me to call the venue and learn that the reserved seats go pretty much all the way up to the stage, the GA folks exiled to “concrete” perches off to the side (though presumbably not behind barbed wire). I could only manage 5th row by that point, but not too shabby. See you there.
stogerParticipantMan, you two are good. The Old Dominion by late September on a weekend sounds eminently doable. And Buick 6 retains its gig, it would seem. I’ll cross check via High Road, but as for Twitter, it’s all yours, Lafayette.
stogerParticipantI believe we now, some days after the tour’s close, have a complete array of setlists–albeit not in chronological order. Thanks.

I totally missed “Drunken Angel”.
WELL, I PROBABLY GOT IT WRONG, QUITE POSSIBLE. WASN’T THE SONG BEFORE “PINEOLA” FROM CAR WHEELS THOUGH? DO YOU RECALL A DIFFERENT ONE? PLEASE AMEND, PARKER.
It was nice meeting you Stoger. Wish I could have made it to Columbia to have met more of us forum people.Diamond Ballroom is in the middle of nowhere. Quite a ways from downtown OKC.
stogerParticipantTo be precise, “Still I Long for Your Kiss” was song #11 in Kansas City; “Little Rock Star” came in at 15, with “Out of Touch” 16. I was close.
And yes, Lu clearly said Emmylou recorded/covered her own song “Crescent City”–even finer live than “Sweet Old World,” in my estimation.
stogerParticipantWow, the pressure’s really on here for me to live up to my posting legacy. I prefer Lafayette’s term “additions” to TN Tracy’s “corrections,” but here goes. You’re solid on the first baker’s dozen, Tom, but I think you imagined that “Drunken Angel” got done: understandable case of Blaze Foley overload. So I’ll just list post-“Pineola” here, as I recall the sequence.
14 Out of Touch

16 Come On
17 Real Live Bleeding Fingers & Broken Guitar Strings
18 Changed the Locks

24 It’s a Long Way to the TopTrue, “Real Love” and “Unsuffer Me” did not get performed. If you read Lafayette’s link to the article, you know terms like “a tickle” in the throat, “pure honey” as remedy for same, and “allergic to Nashville” (which is a couple of hours from Bonnaroo, but we get it) were all uttered by Lu around the fourth/fifth song of the set. And if “Learning How to Live” turned out indeed to be “the world’s longest song,” the tune “Pineola” last night could well be called the world’s shortest. I thought Lu had recovered her equilibrium around the time of “Plan to Marry” and “Side of the Road,” but songs 10-16 went by almost in a flash–not only no talk between, but not even a cursory intro by title for any of them. The mood seemed back to the good by the very end of the main set, smiles during the last two.
Butch urged us near the end of Buick 6’s set to be “standin’ and dancin'” during the headliner set, but no one really took this literally, though Tom is right that the crowd was good by reserved seat standards. Susannah said later a couple of fans tried to lobby for that free shirt for real, but no one pressed it, settling happily for the usual discount. This kind of offer was made by Lu between songs 6 and 7, prefaced by “this show isn’t up to my standards.”
Covington patrons might want to know that the setlist-grabbing, beer-drinking, photographer-interfering fan was back for more; he told me beforehand that he had driven up on spur of moment, bought a row S ticket on site. Really not so bad a guy as his non-sober Covington behavior might suggest him to be. “Fancy seeing you here” was his greeting to me in the brewhouse across the way.
So it’s on into the central time zone now, where it’s mere high noon at moment. Not as much of a “sleep in” as you imply, my friend TN. See you up front in Mizzou country. . .

20 It’s a Long Way to the Top [decibel level just fine]C’mon, TN Tracy, a man can’t be conscious night and day. Good show, restorative even, I’d say. Fairly sedate crowd, seated, but into it. Lu said midset she was making a conscious effort to pick songs from different albums: true enough, as 8 of her 9 studio albums (save Ramblin’) comprise the first 10 songs.
I spoke with Nick beforehand and caught him up on the sartorial aspect of some Forum comments, which surprised him. He said he bought a suit in Nashville once and then started wearing it, in honor of LU: much more casual during his REM days, it would seem.
Eric the tour manager gave this stream-of-consciousness-rhyming-couplet-laden intro of Buick 6 I can’t begin to capture here. Suffice to say “the instrumental stylings of. . .” looks like a pretty bland phrase from this side.
And now a nap.

Another well-crafted “you were there” report, stoger. Thanks again for taking the time to report in.
Did you see scary Imus creeping around there? He’s a big Flatlanders supporter as well as being a Lu fan.No Imus sightings, though it sounds like his musical taste is superior to his basketball joke taste. Would we have gotten “Are You Alright” if he had been there, wonder? Nothing from West at all this night, notice.

Song 11. was Fruits of My Labor
Yes, I thought of it hours later, #10 I think actually, squeezed in between the two songs from SOW–not quite as bare of an acoustic interlude as Tucson, but glorious all the same. Glad you enjoyed both Arizona shows.
