6 Blue [before which Lu denounces technology and urges the fans to just enjoy the show and tell people about it later: “I feel like I’m in a fishbowl up here”–she says she can’t get comfortable and also bemoans the rail/barrier between stage and standing first row, though it can’t be more than a few inches]

I guess the legendary Ray Davies of the Kinks didn’t show, or didn’t want to perform with Lu; I believe that Lu is due to record with him in London today.

I agree with the previous post pretty much and will sign off for now. Reckon Charlie Louvin will show?

I was given tickets to see Lucinda by a friend who was had the flu. I own up and say that I had never actually heard of Lucinda Williams before 😳 😳 😳 so had no idea what to expect. Once I had heard a few songs I realised I did know her music and I thought the performance from Lucinda and Buick 6 were absolutely brilliant – especially the drum solos. By the end I really wanted to dance – especially as I was sat right behind about the only person who was! But I found that the gaps in between each song were too long and so the whole ‘build-up’ thing fell flat as soon as each song ended, which was a real shame. Also, I had to laugh as no drinks were allowed in the venue – which is rather grand and prestigious and more geared for more sedate sets I think – so while Lucinda and the Bewicks were happily having their brandies topped up all the way through the set, we could only look on dry-mouthed and stoney faced as they obviously went for it and enjoyed themselves!

So that was brandy in Lu’s sippy cup? Good eyes. And maybe we can rename the instrumental band “Bewick 6” so as to avoid any overlap with the existing blues band Buick 6 (UK-based, I think).

True, Ray Davies never showed in London. Someone in Gateshead did tell me that Louvin was slated to appear at some of the UK shows, so we’ll see….

Wow, great stuff in this stream: Tom Tracy’s bilinguality may be the biggest revelation of the bunch! Anyway, Corcovado, do I translate your words to mean I am being asked to choose between les jumeaux as to which I prefer? Oh my. They were lovely front row young ladies, seated in the second and third chairs center aisle, stage left (that is to say, we three were slightly right of stage, me in first chair). I will have to reserve preference in this matter. Tous les deux, let’s say. They got stuff signed and met Lucinda after.

No need to anyone to apologize for being a “casual fan,” your words here are very perceptive.

Au revoir, TN Tracy et tous.

Touche on that Eagles reference, Lefty. Can you say “watered down” country rock? But Bernie Leadon ain’t a bad guy. Owl, good thoughts, I might go 6.5 out of ten, but yes.

Oh, I bothered to log the setlist, though only two songs were different from Luzerne. The atmosphere was nicely different, though. Who would have thought I could walk in a few minutes after Buick 6 finished and nab a front row seat in the center aisle? Front row at Paris Alhambre = knees literally bumping stage. Surprised there were seats, since it was a GA show. Merci to “the twins” (les doubles en francais?) for their adjacent enthusiasm and grace.

Despite the obvious superiority to the Switzerland venue, Lu seemed tentative at times in Paris. I kept thinking she wanted to speak en francais, but she never did. Tour manager Eric told me afterwards she was “angry,” but Tom said no just tired–which seemed to fit when she finally emerged circa midnight to sign a few, smiling. This was a different venue from first Paris show, I understand.

    Paul, you ready?

thanks for the comments and earlier complete setlist, J–the three songs I missed were great ones of course, but standard for this tour. I felt “stiff as a board” myself up there on the last row of the balcony; nor did I get to interact with any “real fans.” The way I moved was to stand up for exiting fans crossing over me; this seemed to happen after every song–polite but still an outrage to Lu fans. Yes, Eric is good. You would have enjoyed Paris. Oh well.

After the good byes we went to the car and I had a thought and tell to Mercedes to go back to the venue again. 😉
We find the truck driver and ask for Eric. After ten minutes Eric came and carry us to the backstage to say thanks and goodbye to Lucinda and Tom. 😀
At the entrance we find David Sutton and finally we give him my t-shirt from The Cramps too. Maybe some gig he will put on. 😮
By the way, Lucinda plays “something about what happens when we talk” after she asked in Zaragoza to us if we wish some song to play in Barcelona. Wonderful!!! 🙄

Specially thanks to Eric F. Big hug Tom O. and kisses Lu!!!

Good thinking, bigsubi, good errand-running Mercedes. What are spouses for really¿ And I failed to point out in my report that Lucinda was given flowers at two different points in the show, one set of which went toppling during “It´´s a Long Way to the Top” as Chet lost his balance shortly after being bumped by David. This indicates a lot about the fans here–and about the rockin´nature of the last Spanish show.

“Put his feed” on the moon, mi amigo Bigsubi¿ Ah, a chunk of green cheese indeed. Lucinda hung the very moon in your view, and I´m not sure you´re wrong about that. Hasta luego, hermano.

Guys, I like the boxing metaphor here. Bigsubi, not sure who “impregnated” whom on either side of the stage, but the interaction was great, you´re right. May the plaza, the explorer, and the great Neil Young song referenced by your t-shirt be united forever: Cortes/Cortez lives!

Blueboy, good setlist: the final version of the final song was indeed “definitive.” Slight correction on song 12; It´s called “Atonement” (though some Nashville lawyers might get ahold of it for prosecution purposes, to be sure).

The crowd was feeling it, though song four´s title could have been a personal motto for the two guys in front of me–slight move away and I was in a quieter zone again.

Thanks to Susannah for describing the ponytailed Bigsubi, for easier access: nice to meet him and his wife. The show was listed at 21:00, but when I arrived at five of, Buick 6 had come and gone. The whole concert ended at 22:45, shank of the evening in these parts I was thinking. But no sweat. Will try to arrive earlier in Barcelona so as to stand up front–yet another non reserved seat venue!

Thanks to Eric and Tom, as always.

    Tony, thanks for the comment.

Tom, sorry to be such a tease. I was trying to translate my favorite line in the song, not the song title–sol/sun is absolutely right. It´s “I Envy the Wind,” recorded by Leila (sp?) Downs in both languages. Lucinda translated and sang wonderfully. She´s the sun that brightens MY summer, indeed.

Bigsubi, you´re entitled to your paralysis, happened to me in Lincoln, Nebraska in ´02 when first I shook Lu´s hand. And by the way, I don´t think I´ve heard 6 songs from Essence in one concert since. Sublime. “Viento” is maybe right–the English and Spanish of the verb and noun in the title were both phonetically close.

I´ll take that Neil Young and raise you one Cash/Dylan/Brown by way of t-shirt design. Soon.

Most were sitting, me standing under a species of local palm tree, stage right. S says she goes to museums and touristy things on off days, looks not peaked at all. Holding up well, in short.

Perfect setlist Towanda: couldn´t have captured it better myself. Yes, it was great meeting Towanda and Julio after the show, though “blueboy” and “swampdog” remain unknown to me (and who knows which other compound-word megafans). As for my friend Trina, great company for a great show, but I´ll be traveling alone from here on out, none (singular or plural) for bigsubi to meet–just a plain old humble Tennessee boy out on his lonesome. I look forward.

As Towanda noted, Lucinda spoke some Spanish from the stage (and also acknowledged the distinction between that and the Basque tongue) late in the set, further endearing her to fans. Swampdog´s sign must have worked to get song seven, and “Tears of Joy” featured a slightly different arrangement highlighted by increased background vocals by Chet and David. Other than that, the songs came fast and furious, spot-on, little talk between. I defer to Towanda´s enthusiasm: reread her comments.

And now for some museum-hopping prior to heading south/southeast. . .
