Let me just say: PLEASE send Bigsubi such things, if you are a photographer more than a writer. Or even if you aren’t. PLEASE.
stogerParticipantLefty, we were close in Rochester but ne’er us twain did meet–must have timed our multiple visits to the merch table at conflicting junctures.
Thanks, tonyg and music lover and lafayette, but it was ASHE not NASH which found me in the company of former Love Band bassist Taras Produniak again. We chatted bus side a good 7-8 minutes afterward. Jim Christie just became a father again and does the occasional gig with Jim Messina. Dwight Yoakam is making the casino circuit (!). The T-man himself has moved out of “beautiful North Hollywood” and is tending the horse farm further out in the LA area in his non-touring moments. And let’s just say he seems very content as a sideman in the Richard Thompson band. No bitterness or catty remarks from him, but I believe it’s safe to say he enjoys the night to night stability of his current post, put it that way. What’s intriguing for a fan from show to show is not always the optimum for a band member.
As musiclover says, great show: prob. same set with one extra encore tune in Asheville. They play the new record Dream Attic in sequence, take an extended break (there was no opening act), then 7 or 8 “hits” (Richard’s mock term, and he played up the lowercase-ness of it), then 2-3 encores. Nothing off Rumor and Sigh, but two off Shoot Out the Lights (“Wall of Death”; “Man in Need”).

Clearly, the “calling in sick” plan put forward by West Words for me is one I should have implemented. But thanks for the vicarious concert here, next best thing. I heard an earlier manifestation of “Port Arthur” in Cleveland last fall, but this one was no doubt superior–Tom, is it really going to be on Blessed, though? “Ugly Truth” I envy your ears (along with the wind, of course) for also. What variance from the Sunday set list! More more more when you all get a chance. I guess paul from los angeles joined me in missing this gem?
stogerParticipantThanks for going with the 19th for the first Fayetteville show, Tom, because it’s just enough still the weekend that I can make it, though not Monday. Lafayette, there are condos and ranch villas in Arkansas too of course, and if you start driving now, you can pick up West Words and tn Tracy at the regional airport in plenty of time: ha har 😀
stogerParticipantYou’re amazing, LWJ.
stogerParticipantThat’s a great find, LWJ: I’d never heard of this Austin event, and what a great label for it. Annual you say? Randy Weeks moved to Austin within the last couple of years, and only because Lucinda plugged him from the stage some years ago did I know to show up at Culver City’s Cinema Bar on a Saturday night while visiting Los Angeles. He ripped that tiny joint apart bimonthly. His version of “Can’t Let Go” on his record Madeline is superb, and let’s plug those Lonesome Strangers records from the 90’s era too. Yeah, “Still I Long” is a co-cover technically I guess, all respect to the late DJ, but it’s pretty impressive Lu put “Can’t Let Go” on Car Wheels–apparently chosen from a batch of demos he sent her during the final throes of the Lonesome Strangers band days. Great stuff.
stogerParticipantNice supplementary account, Lafayette–and it’s good to see you bonding with West Words and with Bob Harris also. Solo acoustic indeed. I bet Delta goes direct from northern Kentucky to northwest Arkansas Regional airport, I’m just sayin’.

You must be excited beyond belief, tnt!
Stoger?? Did tnt nail it?
Yes, TN Tracy answered the joke correctly, though the pithier “Somebody’s gonna lose a trailer” would have been my official answer. I don’t suppose anyone would want to hear the only other joke, Southern or otherwise, which I have in my repertoire? It’s about Southern girls and sex.

My favorite line I like to use when I know I cannot attend is…
I would have divorce papers waiting for me 😆 (if I took off for Arkansas so shortly after returning from Nashville).
Reminds me of a little Southern joke, Lafayette. .
Q: What do tornadoes and divorces have in common–at least in the state of Arkansas?
A: ???????????
stogerParticipantNashville’s great, yes, Lafayette. Still awaiting someone’s (yours? West Words’?) account of the Friday night studio interview/mini-show. As for Fayetteville on the Sabbath, hmh…
stogerParticipantGreat photo, LWJ–this was a “public” bonding moment, with apparent private ones following. Forgot to mention that all I needed to do on Internet Explorer here at the North Harbor Dr. Holiday Inn business center computer was type in the one letter “L”–and immediately I could click on this Forum website. Wonder which other guests might have preceded me 😆
stogerParticipantMan, wasn’t that chicken fried steak w/gravy some of Denny’s finest, Tom? Since Chrissie was not among the four of us in the booth, we all went carnivorous. She did catch a whiff of hog early in her set and, apparently like Long Beach, let fly with some anti-barbeque sentiments. Seemingly she and Lu “bonded” during the first part of the aftershow, but no Chrissie appearance to the masses with backstage stickers. Former Humphrey’s Lu opener Lisa Sanders was among this crowd, however.
West Words, fine setlist: Unlike me once and Paul once, you actually got song number seven listed accurately. “Buttercup” was in fact not played, Tom, but you nailed the others. In addition to Sarah Palin and the “fear mongerers,” Lu bade us not let The Tea Party pilfer our joy either.
Thanks to all for welcoming me back into the fan fold. A one-off definitely worth it. . .
stogerParticipantI noticed the omission of “Buttercup” also from my North American perspective, punch drunk, but still, sounds like a great show with the sophomore appearance of “Convince Me” and two [sweet] tour debuts, “Old World” and “Side.” I’m surprised tntracy hasn’t jumped Paul for inaccuracy on that long title “Something. . .,” but maybe getting a pronoun wrong is not as serious as screwing up the verb 🙂 Here’s hoping both tntracy and west words will find computer access to supplement these fine reports of Paul, TonyG, and others. . . .

Good morning, Stoger. I had no prior knowledge of Chrissie being on the flight, and I made no special effort to obtain an “A” boarding pass. As I was waiting to board the flight, I saw Chrissie, JP, and Patrick approaching the boarding area, carrying their guitars. They apparently had “Business Select” tickets, and quickly moved into the A1-A3 waiting position. Chrissie was huddled into the corner, and was avoiding any outside contact. Patrick seemed more restless, and walked around a bit, and I did approach him, and say hello.
I had an “A56” boarding pass. As I boarded, I saw Chrissie, JP, and Patrick, sitting in Row 1, again with Chrissie huddled against the window, her eyes avoiding any contact. Since the plane had thru passengers from DAL and ABQ, the aisle seats were almost filled by “A56”, and I ended in Row 21, seat D. The plane was completely full, it was only 1:15 PM, and I was not ready for an alcoholic drink, much less walking to Row 1, and standing where “passengers shall not congregate” near the front lavatory.
After the flight, I walked down to exit for the traffic island for the Yolobus 42A to Downtown Sacramento. I saw Chrissie, JP, and Patrick, with their guitars, and some managers, and they walked to the traffic island for the Rental Car Shuttle. Slightly different than Lucinda’s bus operation.
Ah, Business Select–the budget carrier’s answer to First Class by any other name. Huddled in the corner indeed. But I still hope to purchase Fidelity! today.
And now, as lwjetta might bid us do, let’s return to the topic of the Lu stream here 😀 🙂
