Thanks West Words, for digging this up and noting that Lu made good on the set list variance from Sunday to Monday. “Minneapolis” in its own element, my my. . .

Could anyone make the bridge to tonight with some narrative or a setlist from Dakota Residency Night Three? There’s a certain “Lu gap” here which needs be plugged. I think I can take it from there. . . .

Thanks to all for comments and links, and sorry at least one person in the other thread didn’t get to the show, accounting for part of the “five or six empty seats” I suppose. Sounds like most of the patrons weren’t surprised or daunted by what would be deemed a blizzard in many parts of the country. “Buttercup” solo, my my. Didn’t know Randy Weeks was a MN native, glad that slide guitar “enlivened” a song he of course wrote himself–“jaunty” to be sure. Wonder if Lu named the “Metal F”-era bassist as she “blabbed?” I believe I know the gent in question, a San Franciscan once in Chuck Prophet’s band I think. Anyway, may the snow melt by getaway day to WI, and may the song “Minneapolis” be played in that town, getting the phenomenal WWT album into the solo mix.

Thanks to both of you for the good narrative and the setlist respectively. Nothing indeed off West or WWT, and only one off L Honey (a stripped-down “Honeybee,” must have been fine!). I doubt there’s going to be a guest guitarist every night, but I dig what you mean about steadying Lu down on matters that the audience might not even have picked up on. I wasn’t in Des Moines in past, but apparently there is a history of one or more “meltdowns” in that city; perhaps that was in Lu’s memory. The time I did see her at Englert Iowa City was first-rate. There’s middle ground of course between “coffeehouse-esque” and arena, and that’s what most of us are used to with Lu and band. i do look forward to the more acoustic solo gigs, though I fret for Lu’s self-consciousness too. But that’s part of why she’s so great and writes such great songs. “Little rascal” is a hoot of a comment, probably she’s called him worse–as most of us have our siblings, in life or in art. Perhaps those Madison teacher unions’ protests will find their way into her Milwaukee banter later in the week, if she’s not too weary to banter on a fourth consecutive show night! Thanks again for the info.

LWJ, no ridicule at all, given you provided from afar links to the only real info we have about this tour debut. Thanks, and more thanks. Surely someone could give an approximate setlist, maybe our manager himself, to tide us over until the Dakota reports.

It wasn’t the Englert, but given I was “stuck” in my west TN habitat for the Friday evening, Amy Lavere at a little cafe in midtown Memphis called The Beauty Shop (yes, circular hair dryers hover over selected booths) helped ease my pangs at not being in Iowa. Perhaps I’ll start an “Amy Lavere” thread under singers & songwriters. Among other notable facts, she was produced by the late Jim Dickinson.

And Bo didn’t produce Car Wheels or Essence of course (as could be interpreted from the phrasing of that posting here), but he was a big factor, wasn’t he? I’d say the ’01 Essence tour is the last we’ll see of him as a member of Lu’s band, but one never knows. . .

How many zeroes on that $ figure, Tom? I’ll collect that bet from you in the land of the Hoosier. But my tour debut day is coming soon, in a different midwestern state.

What, telephonic hook-up for West Words? Maybe I should have provided my own cell number. Anyway, 6 out of the first 7 songs were from the new record, sweet: Bet she through “Out of Touch” in there just to see if Butch could break some sticks. Paul, I can tell by your tone how crushed you were that Lu and band had to walk just past you to get to stage. Tony, keep that alcohol/nicotine balance going, will you? Wish I had been there–if for no other reason to further the “regular looking” majority quotient up front. Hope to have reports from cawane and etienne also. Good times, vicariously.

I sent an email to find out when doors open but something tells me it’s 8 pm. Given who is performing tonight, an early arrival seems prudent.

This place looks like a good candidate for a pre show eat and drink session. It is across the street at the south end of the block.

    Dillon’s Irish Pub & Grill
    6263 Hollywood Blvd
    Los Angeles, CA

But will it match West Hollywood’s Cantina spot for ambience, Tony? I wish Cawane a Happy Valentine’s Day (gender-specific greeting there) and all of you males like Tony and Paul the luck of the Irish as you have a life treat tonight. Reports, please.

Right now we are looking for someone who doesn’t have their own thing -someone who is willing to make a real commitment. It’s not easy bringing in a new guitar player and having him need to learn almost a hundred songs -as Lu likes to be able to play anything at any time. We do have some great candidates coming in to audition this week, so we’ll find the guy.

“the guy” or the gal? I say that not out of any abstract PC gender consciousness, but because a certain Aussie twelve-string slingstress told me “I’d take it” if offered. However, she does her “own thing” and does it well, as TonyG will confirm for us on the 24th of the month. Still, she might not refuse a formal audition, though she is Down Under in her homeland touring this week.

Between Tony and Paul, I think we’re covered by way of report; in fact, I’m predicting one or both will split by the Augustana midnight hour and have setlists on file by the time those of us in the east rise in the Tuesday early dawn. Do include your final wardrobe details both of you–Paul, you’ll be on firmer ground here than that Stubbs outdoor quicksand, so white tennis shoes should play off your otherwise black garb nicely, not likely to get scuffed or dirtied at all.

Good work Stoger. I am starting to get pumped up about seeing Lu on 2/14.

Hollywood men also wear funny hats. I need to get one.

I envy any man who will see Williams and McCue within ten days of each other in the City of Angels–regardless of wardrobe!

thanks Lefty and Tony. Tony, now is the time to start (1) darkening your wardrobe and (2) inking your biceps, so as to be hip enough to enter that Lu Valentine’s Night venue.

Well, I’m happy to report a successful Jayhawks night two. I worked the line from end to start a bit before doors, and was rewarded for my pains by stony silence to my query about anybody wanting to sell an extra ticket, save for one bitch who bade me “go on up to the corner and buy yourself one.” Which I in time did, from a guy who couldn’t have distinguished the Jayhawks from the Badgers but was working the spot with a wad of cash and some e-tix print-outs. The boys (plus Grotberg) did 24 total, one more than last night, ending with a ragged reversion to the “Bunkhouse” album re-released on Lost Highway, “People in This Place.” “Ain’t No End” preceded it in the encore, Louris strangely coming unmiked near the end. That was a “special request.” The main set went well, with the one cover on Tomorrow the GG attributed graciously by Louris to Grand Funk Railroad. Two repeats from HTH, plus three or four newbies from the “late spring or early summer” studio record impending. “NV CA” from Blue Earth was a treat. Still lean on the last 3 official Jayhawks records, “Tampa to Tulsa” done again and received nicely to start the encore.

Now what to tide me over until Lu solo night four, Wisconsin?

Also, on the JazzFest message board, someone stated that LW will be playing a night gig at Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans the same day. Can anyone confirm (or refute) this? Thanks.

Or better yet, don’t bother “refut[ing]”: Confirm confirm confirm please!!!!!!!!!!!

As long as we’re referring to ourselves in the third person singular, “stoger” will be there. Tim, maybe we can find a nearby cantina to the HOB a la West Hollywood?
