Sorry I didn’t clarify, tntracy and others: an entity calling itself “Buick 6” did in fact open the Boise show, with plans I guess to continue. Third lead guitarist to come under that heading (Val never worked up the instrumentals, don’t think): Rock on, boys.
stogerParticipantThanks, lwj, though your fellow country[wo]men seem silent as far as in-person reports, eh?
stogerParticipantHe is–and would only add one Lu comment, to band, shortly into song five: “Start the thing over, please.”
Otherwise, happy Lu, huge crowd at 10 bucks a pop. Onwrd.

Hey stoger, glad to see your great reports again.
Are you in for the long haul on this tour thru July ?
Tell me, I hope you had time in Victoria to partake in afternoon tea at the magnificant Fairmont Empress Hotel.
So far, you are really bumping into some nice people =Chuck P. & Stephanie F., and an old girl friend of Butch’s.lwj
Well, a man who debarks from a ferry at a quarter after six, still with customs to clear and a 7:30 ticket time on a Lucinda show sans opening act, is not likely to dawdle over tea–however storied the serving site. I mean, I’m as much an Anglophiliac as the next guy, but this was not on my Victoria itinerary for this visit. Maybe in future.
stogerParticipantThanks for responding, punch drunk. Yeah, three songs in, it looked like a promising night for the Car Wheels album. Still, Victoria was one of the best. . . .
stogerParticipantOh, I forgot to mention–just to get this stream back on Planet Earth–that I sat next to friends of John “Butch” Norton at the Saratoga show: they knew him when, one person claiming him as her first ever (high school) boyfriend.

David Lindley was summoned off stage about 35 minutes into his set, perhaps to avoid a repeat of any Robert Earl Keen-like encore from last year. The hook.

21 Get Right with God {Blake initiates the “Stand on the Rock” bit, Lu follows]* I think: something off Car Wheels at this point, anyway
This was a fine tour debut, with a somewhat sedate crowd as Pit Bull points out. I’m not quite ready to elevate Blake Mills to deity status, but among the people the kid impressed was one Chuck Prophet, proudly sporting his aftershow pass on the inside of his coat lapel up front. It was great to chat with Chuck and his wife Stephanie Finch for a bit.
Also, a shout-out to Tom Bockman, who occasionally posts on this Forum under “blue” I think. Tom was last seen by me in Saratoga, August 2010, and we enjoyed many shows together a few years back. He claims he’s not going tonight. Come on now, you want to see her so bad again, right? Drive your car in the middle of the afternoon. Do it.
The Wells Fargo Center is tucked away north of Santa Rosa proper. I was laden with a thick program of the year’s events there upon entering, and while Lafayette and others may appreciate the full page Amos Lee gets in front of his August appearance, Lu was not featured in the program. Oh well, I tossed it floorward in short order and felt less burdened for it.
One new guitar tech, who has a ways to go to match Nick sartorially. Ethan is back on monitors, Matt at the merch table, etc. Familiar faces, nice to see, though I don’t quite know everybody’s name. Perhaps Lu will make crew intros soon, down to the bus drivers, as in those fabled shows Chuck Prophet Himself opened in ’02.
So yes, Mama was happy. Good omens for the ahead.
stogerParticipantHmh: as “ravish”-ing as this young Gallic lady with the ancient Greek name no doubt is, I doubt that this is meant as a literal request for Tom, given its active verb form here. The implications of him doing that might be problematic for the tour bus dynamics overall. But figuratively, sure, “Unsuffer Me” might do the trick for many Santa Rosa fans.
stogerParticipantTwo Mcshows I wish I could make: Sunday night the 12th at New Orleans’ 12 Bar, plus Tuesday night the 14th at Otherlands in Memphis, with Susan Marshall. Dang it.
stogerParticipantG19 in Knoxville, Paul, no doubt alphabetically inferior to your aisle seat (19 is third from aisle), but it will be fun to hear this voice once more, the voice which I first heard across the street at the Tennessee Theatre on May 24, 2001–Kasey opening for my first ever Lucinda show. The rest is . . . . As for Nashville, the Station Inn is a surprising choice for KC’s gig there; the website lists the 9:30 show on the 12th as “pending”; apparently, Fun with Doyle and Debbie gives way for no man (or woman) as long as it’s a Tuesday. Why not the Belcourt? Station Inn is “historic,” yes, but I’ve never known those caneback chairs and rickety tables to be cleared out for any act, regardless of international stature. Have to see about that one. Thanks for the tip-off.
stogerParticipantWinery gig there, Tony? Not many other venues in the area short of monasteries or convents, as I recall from a summer concert of Lu’s in the middle of last decade–guitar techs Flappy and Jeff had to literally shoo some fans off the stage who ascended it during the proceedings. Were you there?

One comment.
The band sounds truly awesome with the newest member, Blake, who is on lead guitar. Lucinda appears very pleased with the band, as she refers to Blake as “fresh blood”. Love it! Blake impressed us with his haunting and dreamlike sounds from the guitar when they did “Born To Be Loved”. Great song – bluesy and deep.http://www.portraitsinblues.com/05222011LucindaWilliams.htm
It must have been a special night indeed and it would be great to have Tom O make the recording available some day.
Facebook has become a 2nd forum for us fans.HMH. GUESS I BETTER HITCH UP IN THAT CASE. . . .lwj
stogerParticipantGlad to see you broke your streak, Paul–fully expect to see you at those two California shows in late June, even with some rockers and more recent material to be expected, your second and third consecutive Lucinda live appearances. You seem pleased, though neither “The Night’s too Long” nor “Everything Has Changed” made the cut. Have to agree with lafayette that “Where is My Love” might have been the pinnacle of that set. Paul, surely you must have joined the ranks of cellphone owners with camera capability by now. Trust you didn’t bump your shins against the railing, given that house configuration. Here’s to a much needed respite for Lu and the great band/crew (easy for a fan to say, given the numerous 2011 summer and fall choices which are popping up!).
stogerParticipantGlad to see you survived both the charging Park West drunks and the predicted Apocalypse in general, Lafayette. You didn’t have tntracy as an elbow-throwing buffer a la Asheville, but it sounds like you had allies. This report brought me news in both the musical and political senses; has Immanuel already been elected? Last I heard, he was struggling to establish city residency (cp. his former boss’ efforts to do so on a national level). I guess I need to tune in to WGN more. And perhaps the listed song was “Come to Me Baby,” a Howlin’ Wolf cover which was a pretty standard set-closer for Lu circa 2002-03? That would have been fitting, given the Wolf’s move to the Windy City out of Mississippi way back when.
Given that the world is still [too?] much with us, who will step up for Park West night two report?
