Roanoke 10/25 presale announcement just went up on FB. Starts tomorrow morning and password if BLESSED.
Buffalo 11/6 coming next.
Just a few more dates to announce.Dang it, I grew up halfway between Roanoke and Knoxville, but Tuesday won’t work for me. Still, good to see more dates cropping up. Thanks, Tom.
stogerParticipantSpoken like a fan with New England/Minnesota-bred notions of Southern geography, Tim: I’m a good 225 to 250 miles from Athens, TN! đ Still, if a certain artist’s California duo tour doesn’t conflict, and one of those south of the Mason-Dixon line “blizzards” of 2-3 inches which send us into panic doesn’t hit, I’ll see EJ once more.
stogerParticipantWell, with all due respect to the scintillating prose up around Lafayette’s household chore-mongering, I went to an Eilen Jewell show last night and hope that no one will mind if I see fit to return the stream to its original titled subject matter. She played several from the new record at the Basement Nashville last night, though not my favorite–“Over Again,” featuring Zoe Muth on back-up vocals.
Eilen and her drummer/husband (Jason I think) were gracious before and after show, mentioning the dinner they had had with Lucinda and Tom, in New Hampshire I think. I actually was in the row in front of them at that Portsmouth show last March, which I reminded them of. This produced only baffled looks and the same sort of “where do you live exactly?” lines which I get so so often in such contexts. Anyway, it was a fine show–though perhaps not up to the Knoxville Scottish pub where their previous week’s show was the first one in the history of that venue. Smaller crowd in Knoxville, as reported by a couple who attended both TN shows. Eilen is a complete professional regardless of crowd level, or in the case of last night, a puzzling co-bill status which probably clipped off 3-5 songs from what she would normally play. No need to name the other band on the co-bill, though Eilen was good enough to acknowledge them from the mike.
Two Loretta tunes, “Deep As Your Pocket” (compare the Tres Chicas studio version) and “Fist City.”
Although no party lobbied for this in any direct way, it was clear from the conversation that EJ would not refuse any potential opener consideration or status. Of course none of us felt it proper to discuss that topic too spot-on.
OK, back to Ohio water bottles and house painting and so on now. đ

Great report. I do not ordinarily argue literature with college teachers but isn’t the J.D. Salinger character Zooey? It was a long time ago that I read the book.
I will hunt the CD down and listen too it.
Dang you Tony, I think you’re right. My lapse there. No wonder ZM herself was a little disinclined to take my Salinger talk and run with it, mentioning that her mother had a good friend named Zoe by way of explanation. You’ve caught me out.
Keep raising high those roofbeams, Stooger

The only LA area show will be the Henley opening slot, which will of course be a shorter opener set. The tour will finish this year in SF 11/19 & 20.

Lucinda Williamsâ enthralling 45-minute set was probably puzzling to the uninitiated in attendance. Performing with her trio, the unassuming alt-country singer/guitarist began with a batch of sparse numbers, often colored by Blake Millsâ tasteful slide guitar and reverb effects: first came the title track from her winsome latest effort, Blessed, then âWorld Without Tears,â âCopenhagenâ and âBorn to Be Loved.â
Once she and her group picked up steam, the crowd really got into the material, particularly a raucous âButtercupâ from the new album (Elvis Costello and Matthew Sweet guest on the studio version); âReal Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Stringsâ; the jagged, Neil Young-esque âEssenceâ; a sinewy âChange the Locks,â where Williamsâ quavering Southern drawl vocals stood out; and the sexually-charged stomper âHoneybee,â with a smoking Mills solo.
Thanks for reminding me/us that there actually was a live Lu show last weekend. I had forgotten, if ever I knew, that Blake Mills was in Dawes; I caught a few songs from them at last weekend’s Rhythm and Roots fest in Bristol–and would have engaged the frontman in conversation if I had been aware of this connection. More on that Fest coming to this Forum–haste post-haste.
stogerParticipantI’ll take that front row and raise you one seat to your left, West Words! Road trip, rainydayman?
stogerParticipantOh my God: home game (80 miles from my house), but I plan to be in Nashville for Americana Music showcases, then on to Asheville. Missed Beale St. fest, will miss this. I like away games, clearly.
stogerParticipantAh, had almost forgotten about the third wheel, that “secular humanist” clergyman. Congrats!
stogerParticipantThanks for the reports, Tony and Tom: I couldn’t agree more that the imprimatur of paul from losangeles makes any “scene” official for all and sundry. As for Mr. Kelly, I hope some Forum members (including tomO) have the live from Australia Butch Hancock-Jimmie Dale Gilmore record from some time back, wherein they cover Lu’s “Howlin’ at Midnight” (god I hope I’m remembering the title right from Happy Woman B, never heard Lu do it live), with Paul Kelly on stage with them. I can’t remember the title of that album, but it’s an official as opposed to bootleg release and has some real gems, Carter Family covers and so on. Also, a Kasey Chambers EP available once only at her merch booth had her covering a Paul Kelly song, though I damaged the EP and had to throw it out (for shame, me), once again not remembering the song title right now. That little gem also had two Fred Eaglesmith songs on it and was marketed as a supplement to The Captain CD. I asked Kasey after her show earlier this year if there were copies still around: no. My loss.
stogerParticipantCare to name names either of you? I just love “distinctive” Aussies and Angelos.
stogerParticipantI’m not Tom, but how about an Appalachian State University (the REAL ASU–y’all remember that opening weekend upset of Michigan few years back, eh?) reunion on site in Black Mountain, rainydayman?
stogerParticipantYeah, but I’m not an Orangeman–nor have I “hit” with a creative nonfiction book of the magnitude of Liars Club. Still, I’m trying. Let’s hear it for upstate New york towns and institutions (including Ithaca and Cornell), eh lefty?

Great to hear, their vocal and instrumental skills are superb–but I’m not sure Karin and Lanford (if I have the names right) have the rodeo savvy to truly open this run. Time will tell. [still better than deborah Winger and John Travolta starting the evening though]

does anyone know when the presale for Chattanooga is ? …..and the presale password ,”blessed” ?
I was able to get to venue home page via the link lafayette posted earlier in this stream, but no visible presale was evident. I didn’t spend much time with it. All GA, all standing, correct?
stogerParticipantI’m partial to hard copy, Lefty, so I’ve already ordered Rodeo for Dummies. Still, thanks for the link!
