I’ve seen over a dozen shows in the last 13 years and watched all the musicians come and go. I first saw this version of the band in KC during a rainstorm (thanks for not stopping Lucinda!). After years with the great Doug Pettibone on guitar, I admit that I was somewhat skeptical about how anyone would fill his shoes.
In KC it was obvious that Blake Mills was still learning the songs, but the other night in Raleigh, it was clear that he’d given up trying to sound like the old band and had made these songs his own. Some great moments on the guitar came out that night, particularly some of the slide stuff.
Blake’s opening set was very well done and a perfect start to a hot evening.
Now I’m bummed that I didn’t drive up for the Richmond show 😉

steveParticipantI saw the show in Greensboro last night and discovered this sad turn of events.
I really thought Doug Pettibone transformed the old songs and brought out new sounds (World Without Tears is still a favorite) that had just been waiting for the right guitarist.
It’s like Bonnie Raitt without Johnny Lee Schell.
steveParticipantExcept that she didn’t play all of those songs.
Missed “Sweet Side.” Would have been nice to hear. She played “Righteously” instead. The woman sitting next to me had never been to a show and came only because she’d heard “Righteously” on a sampler CD.
When she came out for the encore, someone in the crowd yelled, “AC DC!” and she promptly broke out “Long Way to Rock and Roll.” Then played “Joy.” By then it was 11:10 pm and the house lights came up.
A great show in general, but a sad day when I saw that Doug Pettibone wasn’t on the stage. His subtle, yet powerful guitar was greatly missed. The new guy, while a great player, was way too loud when he should have been quieter (like on “Tears Of Joy”).
I was a fan before Doug joined the band, and I’ll be a fan after, but Doug Pettibone really made these songs come alive the last few years.

Originally shot in HDTV and broadcast on PBS, the 45 minute segment on Lucinda Williams featured: Ventura, WWT, Essence, Bleeding Fingers, Joy, Over Time and Righteously. PBS usually sells DVD of Soundstage broadcasts but this one is not on their website (pbs.org). Does anyone have a copy of this or know how to get it?
It seems like this was the first tour I remember seeing Doug Pettibone playing with Lucinda and he just nailed it. His guitar is the perfect compliment to her voice and rhythm guitar.
The “Live for Austin TX” DVD (from Austin City Limits) is another great performance from 1998 and you can get that one on Amazon.
Are there any other Live Concert DVD out there?
