lumpsum,
Thanks for the link to the excellent writeup about how most of us feel about Lucinda’s music. My old damaged eardrums require earplugs when I go to a concert, so no ringing weeks later for me.
Steve
stevarinoParticipantharmonyluv,
Welcome to the Lucinda Williams forum. Lots of posts by you in the last few days. Welcome to the club.

Thanks so much for posting the set list for this show. I love that she opened with Rescue, one of my favorites off West. She is really mixing up her songs on this tour which is just awesome. Let us know how the second night in Seattle goes.
I always love to eat at Ivar’s when I’m in your town. Acres of Clams right on the waterfront. You have such an awesome city, I’m so lucky to get to go there often on business.

The last song of the KOCH release of the Rought Trade self titled album is simply listed as Sundays (plaural). The first line of the song is “I can’t seem to make it through Sunday” (singular), which is also how she sings it. So whatever you want to call it, we know what you mean. I love this song too.
Oh, and Lucinda is credited with writing the song.
Steve
stevarinoParticipantAnd I always thought “Four Strong Winds” was a Neil Young song off his “Comes a Time” album. But looking at the credits, indeed Ian Tyson, a fellow Canadian gets the credit for writing the song. I never knew that, thanks for the education groovingroomer. I’ll have to check out some more of this Alberta boy’s music.
Regardless, it must have been awesome to hear her cover that great old song.
Steve
stevarinoParticipantTom, you amaze me. Thank you so much for being so available and such a supporter of the fans. 10
1) Chronological set list 3 – This is great occasianally, but the best part about Lucinda is how she mixes up her shows. 7
2) Split sets – We want to jump up and start dancing from the first song, and end up with a great encore. We want the great old songs sprinkled in between and enjoy the mellow ones along with the new songs too. 6
3) Two nights – A local band (Over The Rhine – OTR) that is making it nationally is doing a two set weekend this December. The first night is their first decade and the second night is their second decade. I wouldn’t miss either night. They opened our new National City Pavilion this summer playing their double album “Ohio” – what an awesome show. So that’s kind of an example for you. Give Linford or Karin a call. 9
4) Return of the album shows – I’d definitely go to NYC for this but not LA. 10
5) Don’t change anything – I like the shows as they are – This is not to far from the truth.
Other ideas:
1) Credit at the merch table – Tom, I just want to support my favorite artists, I dont need a credit. Ticketmaster’s just trying to make a buck. 4
2) Does a fan club hold any appeal – Am i dim? I thought this was the fan club. 5
3) buy tickets before the general public – Ding ding ding ding. I only go to shows I have great seats at, but if Lucinda likes GA…..? At the JCM show this summer Lafayette showed me the special tent they had for the dedicated fans before and after the show. You could try this. I’d bite. 10
4b) Prefer cd (10) – I like to own what I buy. iTunes likes to control it after they sell it 7
5) What cities have we missed? Come to Cincinnati. The Taft is a great venue. 10
6) what did I miss? — We have a framed OTR lithograph which was not inexpensive hanging on our wall. I was disappointed that no LW posters were available at the Columbus show. I’d go on a cruise, or go to the Atlantis on Paradise Island to see a LW show. 8
stevarinoParticipantClive – It does seem like the activity on this forum has slowed a bit lately. I guess everyone is out raking leaves. I can’t spend the time to rank every song but I can certainly pick a personal favorite off each album as I listen to her cover Cold Cold Heart off the Hank Williams Tribute album that came in the mail this week. I’m not much of an “intellectual” when it comes to music since, being an engineer makes me a left side dominant individual. When the music’s playing its the quieter right hemisphere’s turn to dominate.
Lucinda Williams – I agree with ripley’s selection of “Like a Rose”. This has got to be the best sounding vocal performance she has recorded. Its simple, just a few stringed instruments, and her own instrument.
Sweet Old World – “Which Will” I know this is a cover of Nick Drake’s song, but she brings an emotion to it I can feel.
Car Wheels – “Right in Time” It was a hard pick from a great album, but it just steams with her sexiness.
Little Honey – “The Knowing” I love the guitar work at the beginning of this song. I picked it as the best on my first listen to the album, and it still is.
LU in ’08 – “For What it’s Worth” Already an old favorite, she brings new energy to this classic protest song written by one of my favorite songwriters – SS.
Essence – “Bus to Baton Rouge” This song has some incredible visual imagery in it. How she can make me see her childhood home with just a few words amazes me. I guess it reminds me of my childhood home with the “company couch” and “the dining room no one ate at”.
World Without Tears – “Righteously” Again, the opening guitar makes me want to get up and start moving, and again her sexiness drips off this track. What other artist could record a song like this.
West – “Rescue” She opened with this song at the show I went to during the West tour and it immediately captured my full attention, and it still does.
Happy Woman Blues – “Sharp Cutting Wings (Song to a Poet)” This ranks up with songs off any of her albums.
Ramblin’ – “Disgusted” Am I allowed to pick this one, since its also on the Rough Trade album, ok then “Satisfied Mind”
I wonder if Webmasta could set up the voting poll thing. tntracy, how did you set up your poll?
stevarinoParticipantIt reads like a pretty positive article about the concert when I read it. Can’t wait to see the 2009 tour dates posted.
“Buick 6 opened with a 45-minute set of blistering blues-rock”
“for the 1,000 or so fans staying warm in the Burton Cummings Theatre, roots-rock goddess Lucinda Williams made everything seem OK.”
“Williams had little trouble winning over the crowd”
“it’s safe to say those listening were all smiles.”
stevarinoParticipantI had to revisit West after seeing how much I listened to it when it first came out. Songs I really like off West:
Are you Alright
Mama You Sweet
Learning How to Live – Is this about her mom?
Fancy Funeral – This is about her mother.
Where Is My Love – The strings are great on this and her voice sounds great
Rescue – Show opener when I saw her on the West tour I vividly remember being awesome live.
What If – presidents could be black
Wrap My Head Around That – This confusing wording always cracks me up. “What I said you said I said…”This album has plenty of good songs on it, not every single one, but its certainly not an album to be damned at all (imho). I’m usually listening the the underlying guitar, and instrumental playing as much as or more than the words and melody. Eight great songs out of 13 isnt too shabby.
Steve
stevarinoParticipantHey Big Dunce,
I’m looking forward to what the 2009 tour will be as well. Kind of hoping Lu will come near Cincinnati. But if she’s nearby in Columbus or Lexington or Louisville, I’ll be there.
Steve
stevarinoParticipantjanks,
Thanks for the link, I ordered the Rought Trade LP over the weekend. I think its going to replace my Led Zeppelin framed In Through the Out Door album in my media room. I’ll take it to the next LW concert I attend with the hopes of getting it signed. What a nice trophy that would be along with a with a photo inset of her signing it. ha ha.
Steve
stevarinoParticipantHere are my rankings, today, without many words, you know the words already.
1 – Lucinda Williams
2 – Sweet Old World
3 – Car Wheels
4 – Little Honey
4.5 – LU in ’08
5 – Essence
6 – World Without Tears
7 – West
8 – Happy Woman Blues
9 – Ramblin’Special mention goes to the single “Here in California” on the Treasures left behind: Remembering Kate Wolf album, I song I love to listen to often. Also, the live shows of her top 4 and 6th albums in LA and NY are a huge treat for her fans. I need to listen to Live at Filmore again.
stevarinoParticipantOf course “everyone” is a generalization, but I posted a disagreement with tonyg2756’s negative opinion of the duet with Elvis in the Lucinda Songs – Little Honey thread, and what followed was two pages of negative opinions of the selection of Elvis for the duet. So my words on this thread “everyone” meant all those making a post. So maybe one or two positive posts on the Jailhouse Tears duet here, but again, mostly negative.
stevarinoParticipantI love the streaming music on the home page, and its awesome that you can just pick the songs you want to hear. Ralph Cavallaro, you guys rule. I have shortcuts to all my favorite artists, and have not seen a setup as nice this one.
stevarinoParticipantThanks Tom,
Great interview.
