Tony,
I hear what you are saying man. Several people on this site like to put down other fans opinions, comments and favorites. It’s their view and no deviation from it – DAMMIT (In their minds – LOL) My favorite album is, and will always be “Lucinda Williams”, and my favorite song on it is “Like a Rose”. If that makes me a Lucinda-Lite so be it. Phil will F-Bomb me.
In her LA/NY series, during some shows she often had false starts, or “breakdowns” as they are listed on the CDs. My favorite breakdown is when she gets to the end of “Like a Rose” and says “You know what? We played that in the wrong key. Its just a short little song, we have to play that over.” And proceeds to play it all over again with an even better rendition, when the first one wasn’t bad at all.
My wife always makes fun of the big lyric book she used when we saw her at Humphrey’s by the Bay. She had a different breakdown that night when she couldn’t find the song she wanted and got flustered and had to ask her stage manager to come out and find it for her. I can understand why some people would find that as being less than professional. For me, we all need help from time to time, so I’m fine with it.
That all being said, I loved her warm-up performance at Riverbend in Cincinnati. The most memorable moments from it will be Doug and Chet jamming together during Joy, and the first time (for me) hearing the rocker “Honey Bee”. The worst part was her running out of time to play AC/DC. So I like the new stuff, cherish the old stuff, and can’t wait for the new album, and the new tour. And if you have a problem with that, keep it to yourself.

stevarinoParticipantPhil,
I listened to a few of these and smiled the whole time. The Captain of the Venus’ wife and daughter seem to keep the crew in good spirits. I’ll have to get Lucinda’s song off iTunes. Thanks for the heads up.
stevarinoParticipantI was actually disappointed she didn’t play “Long Way to the Top” in Cincinnati. I’m not an AC/DC fan either, but it is a rockin’ song, and if Lucinda picked it, I’m sure she enjoys it. I bet The Chet and Doug Pettibone sound great jamming out the tune.
As far as whether she is the opening act or the headliner, I’ve seen her both ways, multiple times, and have enjoyed every opportunity to see her perform. Her manager Tom Overby is just trying to expand her fan base, which can only be a good thing. I remember my Xtieth High School reunion after the Neil Young Greendale Tour talking to my friends who I saw at the show more about how good Lu was, than about the weirdness of Neil’s show.
It was also clear to me at Riverbend that the stands and lawn were mostly full and the fans were watching the show, not milling around and talking. I’m sure Lucinda picked up quite a few new fans here, just ask Lafayette. I left shortly after her performance so that other guy didn’t bother me one bit – LOL.
stevarinoParticipantLafayette – I’m hoping for a Cincinnati return for Lucinda as well, I’ll be going to any within a few hundred miles. Maybe I’ll see you at a football games this fall. I’m down in section 138 close to the field.
stevarinoParticipantNice grammer and proper english. Tough read, but I’m glad you liked her.
stevarinoParticipantI’ve heard of that Jim Lauderdale guy – LOL. Thanks for the heads up.
stevarinoParticipantHopefully she will be coming to the Taft Theater in Cincinnati. Any possibilities for that? Its an awesome old building, just the perfect size for her. She was well recieved and watched at Riverbend, so I’m sure lots of people know who she is and appreciate her talent her in town.
stevarinoParticipantYes, Miller Williams is an English Professor, Author, and Poet. I remember him reading some of his work at Clinton’s Inaugural Address.
stevarinoParticipantthejolo,
Yes it was an awesome concert. I was sitting up in section 800 and during Lucinda’s performance of “Fruits of My Labor” this person named Lafayette comes up to my seat and asks me if I’m Steve, and hands me front row tickets. I showed them to the people I was with and asked how cool was it for someone to come find you and hand you front row tickets.
My mouth is sore because I’ve been smiling so much ever since.I’ve never heard Lucinda sing Honey Bee, so it was awesome to hear Lu and her band rock on this one. Its an upbeat rocking song and got me and the crowd moving and paying attention.
I kept turning around to see what people were doing, and saw the seats and the lawn full, no-one was walking around or chatting, everyone was watching the show. Thanks Tom Overby for your knowledge of the music industry and pairing her up with John.
I think my favorite part of the evening was during “Joy” when Chet Lyster and Doug Pettibone were jamming face to face, body to body. It looked like their guitars were touching. But more importantly it looked like Doug, Chet, David, and Butch were totally enjoying the evening, as I was.
Oh, and Lucinda too.
stevarinoParticipantAs Lefty says, her older albums have some wonderful work on them. I would recommend in order the following CDs:
Lucinda Williams self titled album is no longer available – get the live version here on the web site from NY or LA, they are both very good.
Car Wheel’s on a Gravel Road of course her Grammy winning work
Sweet Old World which – came between those two
stevarinoParticipantLafayette – Thanks for the ongoing Lucinda commentary. I’m looking forward to the Cincinnati show as well, although I didn’t book early enough to get great seats. I’m in the first row of the center of section 800, so at least I should have a great view of the stage. The AC/DC finale sounds a little different for Lu, but it sounds interesting.
stevarinoParticipantThe Radio black and white grainy photograph looks like the dashboard of Neil Young’s website car. Is that where it came from?
stevarinoParticipantParker CA – You specifically said the LA Sweet Old World was your favorite night. Is that just for the LA series or is that for all of them. I have the LA “Lucinda Williams” night, and the other four from New York. I think my favorite so far is the World Without Tears night. Even though its not my favorite album, she and her band sounds so good, I swear its actually better than the studio Album.
Which do you think are better, the LA shows or the New York shows?
And for those that can’t buy the Lucinda William’s self titled album, just buy the live version, I’ve been listening to it more than the studio version lately.
stevarinoParticipantThat’s just Lucinda, opening show or final. Didn’t you hear any of the CDs on her live performances of her top five Albums in LA and New York last year? My fave was that she played the entire “Like A Rose” song from her self titled Album, and then at the end said that it was played in the wrong key and made the band play the whole song all over again, and it sounded even better. Its one of my favorite songs, it must have been awesome to hear it twice live.
At Humphrey’s by the Bay in San Diego on her World Without Tears tour she was relying on her Big Lyric Book for the words to her songs and at one point could not find the song she wanted, and had to have her stage manager come out and find it for her.
Hey, we all need help from time to time. I still love the music and performances, and will see her whenever, wherever I can.
