it is an amusing and fun song. And I do have to admit that the studio version has already started to grow on me.

You got it Spence – I smile and laugh every time I hear it

I wonder what opportunities are ahead for my white male son. He is in 5th grad and does well at math, and science, and plays trombone in the band. But reading this series of responses, along with a lot of other materials has me worried. Somehow white male children are being allowed to slip down the ladder of priorities. Female teachers want their classes to be as easy as possible and think all the boys should be on ADD drugs. Stella thinks that every white person is privileged and obviously will try to make sure that any other category has priority over them. Some people will read this and laugh, but honestly I’ve been watching my son and daughter for 11 years and it’s amazing how she is favored over him in many ways. My son scored high enough on his first try to get into the advanced math class but my daughter did not. A specialist was sent to our house to re-test my daughter and afterward she was also placed in the class. Now my son has to help her with the homework. I guess preferences in sex and gender and other categories are making sure we end white male privilege, as Stella desires. Abilities be damned. It does not matter what you can do or accomplish. It matters whether you are the favored gender or race or religion of the moment..

I will probably vote for the presidential candidate that is in opposition to the majority in Congress. Hopefully with a Republican in the Executive branch and the Democrats in control of Congress less legislation will be approved. For me, less government is better.

I’m not usually political, but the racist comments by Stella here inspired me. I’m sure Stella does not think she is racist, but when she begins every paragraph with “white privilege” it pretty clear to me she has a problem with white citizens.

All this Elvis negativity – Whats Up with That?

I listen to Lucinda singing with Elvis and their voices sound very similiar. But mostly they sound like they are having a blast singing together. The lyrics are so amusing they make me smile, and I’m sure the both of them where smiling the whole performance. Lucinda and Elvis have been doing duets together for ages. I guess you are saying she doesn’t know how to select a good duet partner. Well I disagree, I think they sound great together.

    There’s something happenin’ here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Tellin’ me I got to beware
I think its time we stop children what’s that sound
    everybody look what’s going down

I love that Stephen Stills song from when he and his friends Richie Furay and Dewey Martin were part of the Buffalo Springfield. I can’t wait to hear Lucinda’s cover of that classic protest song.

tntracy – I respect your humble opinion that 128 kbps is substandard music. I’d rather listen to vinyl on my old Technics direct drive. My ears agree that 256 kbps is what is required to reproduce CD quality audio, that’s what my settings are on iTunes. I don’t buy much download music because of that. Thanks for the tip on the higher bitrate of Amazon MP3s, and iTunes Plus. I’ll try them and see how they sound.

Right, and at the Town Hall show in NYC she tells the same story about Bill, who had actually flown in to see the whole series there. She jokes about him sending her bluebery cake doughnuts through the mail after she moved back to Texas. Sounds like a few people who still care about each other.

I love all the lyrics to Bus from Baton Rouge, the plastic covered couch, the seahsell driveway, the livingroom no one could enter. But this lyric about the lamp is my favorite. My grandmother had a lamp like this:

There was this beautiful lamp I always loved
A seashore was painted on the shade
It would turn around when you switched on the bulb
    And gently rock the waves[/i]

I don’t see much mention of this band in this forum, but I’ve seen them in concert more than any other band since they are from my home town. I always have to smile at the lyrics to this song, and she mentions several artists this forum admires, and at least one with close relations to Lucinda.

“If a Song Could be President”
    Over the Rhine (Trumpet Child)

If a song could be president
    We’d hum on Election Day
The gospel choir would start to sway
And we’d all have a part to play

The first lady would free her hips
Pull a microphone to her lips
Break our hearts with Rhythm and Blues
Steve Earle would anchor the news

    We’d vote for a melody
Pass it around on an MP3
    All our best foreign policy
    Would be built on harmony

If a song could be president
We’d fly a jukebox to the moon
    All our founding fathers’ 45’s
    Lightnin’ Hopkins and Patsy Cline
If a song could be president

If a song could be president
We could all add another verse
Life would teach us to rehearse
Till we found a key change

Break out of this minor key
    Half-truths and hypocrisy
    We wouldn’t need an underachiever-in-chief
If a song could be president

We’d make Neil Young a Senator
Even though he came from Canada
    Emmylou would be Ambassador
World leaders would listen to her

They would show us where our country went wrong
Strum their guitars on the White House lawn
John Prine would run the FBI
All the criminals would laugh and cry
If a song could be president

I’ll have to do some research and post back here, but I’m pretty sure that Lucinda’s appearance on PBS Soundstage was at one point available on DVD. Its probably not on copy anymore but I’ll let you know what I fin out.

If you find the PBS Soundstage show with Lucinda Williams and Robinella please let me know. I’ve become such a Robinella fan since I saw that show.

    Stella,

I’ve been to a half dozen of Lucinda’s concerts and the one at Promo West was the only general admission concert I attended. All the others had specific seats on the tickets I purchased. We stayed at a hotel near the downtown Columbus venue and got in line early with the true fans who all got the good seats above the concrete dance floor. Talking to the good folks around me they were obviously diehard fans like me. The stage front concrete dance floor was mostly empty until the show started. And yes there was a small group of true fans right up at the stage to watch the band but mostly the floor was filled with groups of younger kids who probably bought their tickets at the door and were more into socializing with each other than watching the show. I can send you a video of her performing “I Envy The Wind” where you can barely her her singing above all the talking in front of me.

My concert rule is to know exactly when a band’s tickets will go on sale or presale and get the best seats I can, usually in the first few rows. My experience here is that the folks sitting around me are dedicated passionate fans and its just a blast talking to them, enjoying the concert with them, and very rarely does anyone sit after the show has started.

So don’t fall asleep on us, Lu has lots of great shows left in her. I suspect she has one or two shows where you know where your seat is when you buy the ticket. And hopefully only Humprey’s by the Bay is the only other place with the plastic folding chairs.

Thanks for the clear headed calm reply Tom. Sorry if I misunderstood your response, but to me, at least, it seemed reactionary, and disproportionate to DIMs initial write up. I re-read both entrys and still have the same opinion. Although I considered most of what David wrote as opinion, I can understand your feeling that some of it was presented as factual.

On a different thought, I keep going back and forth on going to Lucinda’s show in Columbus at Promo West. This is a general admission show with a big concrete dance floor in front of the stage, backed by slightly elevated limited unassigned seating in plastic folding chairs. The only food they serve is White Castles. I saw her there in the Spring of ’07, and although the concert was good, the facility is just sub standard.

Can you bring her to Cincinnati to the Taft Theater or Music Hall which are both wonderfull old theaters with comfortable assigned seating, great acoustics, more seating, and just better ambiance.

    Please!

Thanks for the link to the interview Pit Bull. Listening to Lucinda talk about herself made me smile, but Charlie Rose seems a little uncomfortable and hesitant a few times during the interview. Lots of pregnant pauses like he doesn’t know what to say next. Lucinda’s playing Essence and Lonely Girls more than makes up for his shortfall.

I know I was somewhat negative in my last post, but understand I still paid $100 a seat to go see her play 10 songs as a warm up for JCM, and totally enjoyed the show, and thought it was money well spent.

    David in Maine,

You sure have a lot of time to type.

Regardless, I read your post from Sat Sep 06, 2008 6:14 pm and thought that for you it was a well written, non controversial opinion of Lucinda’s recent work and tour. I thought it was balanced and non-provocative. I tend to agree with you that there are folks on here that think that she can do no wrong, and that their opinion is the only opinion and if you disagree with it them you are wrong. Its kind of like telling me that my favorite Lucinda Williams song is wrong, and that I’m stupid for having that song as my favorite.

I was totally shocked when Tom Overby came on and blasted you for writing what you wrote. That is just totally wrong from a customer relation perspective. Maybe Tom does not care about customers. Customers aren’t allowed to have an opinion on this page.

Tom, you need to mellow out dude. The emotion and energy you put into that write up doesn’t make sense to me. Telling a long time fan that his opinion is wrong is just not the right approach. You should try to understand the difference between fact and opinion. You put a lot of facts out there but, why the effort. David is well informed of the tour the music, and has a been a long time fan. He was expressing an opinion. He is allowed to have one.

I even see that Pit Bull drove a long way to see a concert this weekend and enjoyed it. He is always controvesial, but obviously a huge fan. Tom, don’t piss off Lucinda’s fans. The folks typing in here probably have every album the lady put out and go to any show within a reasonable drive.

Don’t tell us our opinion’s are wrong or dont matter, they do.

You don’t need a time machine to see one of her 90’s concerts, just get her Live From Austine DVD. I have that one on my iPod and watch it all the time. Most of Car Wheels is on that one and a few of her older ones. That was right after her Grammy so she has a great band backing her up, including Jim Lauderdale. It’s a great set of older songs and a great performance. Pick it up from her website.

By the way, I’ve been going to concerts since I saw the Rolling Stones, Journey, and Peter Tosh at Soldier field in Chicago in 1978. and I’ve noticed that most performers tend to play their more recently written music during their latest tours. So that’s not a Lucinda thing, just a fact of life.

    Steve
