this is the poem that it was based on
    Pity the Nation

Pity the nation that is full of beliefs and empty of religion.
Pity the nation that wears a cloth it does not weave, eats a bread it does not harvest, and drinks a wine that flows not from its own wine-press.
Pity the nation that acclaims the bull as hero, and that deems the glittering conqueror bountiful.
Pity the nation whose statesman is a fox, whose philosopher is a juggler, and whose art is the art of patching and mimicking.
Pity the nation whose sages are dumb with years and whose strong men are yet in the cradle.

    Khalil Gibran
The Garden of the Prophet (1934)

i think it was “updated” for our times. timely indeed…i’ve been listening to authors discuss their book Billions Over Baghdad…they estimate 9 billion dollars slated for the iraqi people to have “disappeared” and the stories are incredible. since halliburton’s HQ is now in Dubai, guess american taxpayers & iraqi’s can bend over and take it together.
but that’s for another discussion bb. i was proud of Lucinda for reading this poem.

the john doe songs were from the first Knitter’s cd
wrecking ball & fergit the name of the other one but it’s from the first/same album. i knew they wouldn’t, but i think they could’ve done justice to rock island line.

well if public support has sway, please beg and cajole for me…
the second sets…..please have the second sets released. these are national treasures, and anyone who’s been there can attest, i’m not being overly dramatic. the lady i met last night said that show transformed her life (and it wasn’t just the merlot, well mebbe a little bit)
she was kind of dragged along by her husband and she said it really did hit her big (altho she knew most of lu’s music from listening at home)

I was a bit disappointed on Thursday that Jim wasn’t featured more. He sang backing vocals off & on, but did no songs of his own. He’s been a real good singer & songwriter for years. Can’t wait for tonight!

wish i’d posted that jim lauderdale did a showcase for industry people at the mint last night about 6, i didn’t go.
    sorry tim…

i really hope you’re right about steve and jim. hope greg shows up.

front stage right/pettibone side. if there’s enough of us, we can hold space for people who want to wander and then come back.
i’m petitioning to get greg leisz up there with doug.

i think i know of an extra for tonight too, if needed.
the right/pettibone corner of the stage is a good meeting place inside, if anyone wants to hang there.

i’m rested and ready! (doh, it’s only the 7am hour, guess i’d best be patient)
everyone that was at both shows does say that wednesday’s show ruled. the cd’s seem to indicate this as well, but she’s set the bar very high…
whoo hoo! tonight’s gonna kick butt!!!! (hope i don’t wear myself out by tonight, hahahaha)

sorry for the misinformation about the cd/thanks sweet side
i thought i’d quoted a reliable source, but i should know by now to check for myself.
i know i’m sounding greedy, but sonic youth and springsteen in new york??? like lucinda said last night, they should be arrested they’re having so much fun…
no wonder everyone is grinning ear to ear on stage, it’s a love fest!

lucinda’s interview is starting right now on KCRW

i don’t know what the odds of this are…but on my way in to the show, i met MT…who ended up being my lucky charm…(altho, i did feel a bit dumb when he gently mentioned that i mighta gone to kinko’s to print a copy of my ticket for the weds show. after getting over that, it was all good) AND…he must have been precognizant, as he schooled me about the twiglight singers before the show, then greg dulli gave MT a good dose of shock awe and made his night.

then during the intermission, in blabbing away i met paul who was gracious and kind. thanks to both of you for making my evening eventful.
plus MT helped me reconnect with an old friend that he just happened to be chatting with…lots of synchronicity happening for me last night, thanks again.

i do wish we were able to get the second sets, but i know for a fact that they were recorded, so they’ll show up on DIME eventually…and the last three songs of world without tears is missing from what i’ve been told (i haven’t listened to it yet)

there were so many highlights, but i envy the wind and unsuffer me might have been favorites as lucinda put so much into them.

and three more shows! whoo hoo…who knows who’ll show up………
