ripleyParticipant
oops. anyone figure out who it is?
ripleyParticipantwho is the male vocal on the ugly truth version 2?
ripleyParticipanttom, I bought the album on the 2nd but didn’t send my receipt in the email til after the 6th (I was traveling). Do I still count? 😀
ripleyParticipantalso, I am so glad they chose to include the solo version of Kiss Like Your Kiss on Blessed. I really don’t care for Costello’s voice and don’t feel it compliments Lucinda very well. I much prefer the solo version of Jailhouse Tears as well.
I wish she would have picked someone like Evan Dando who I think would blend very well with her.
ripleyParticipantI agree that there have been far too many “droning” songs on the last few records. Awakening and Soldier’s Song are the only two I’ve started routinely skipping on Blessed, though. I agree that Copenhagen and Seeing Black are the two standouts from this record along with I Don’t Know How You’re Livin and The Ugly Truth.
ripleyParticipantokay so after absorbing the album here are my thoughts:
I haven’t devoured a LW record like this since WWT. As most here probably remember I was less than thrilled with West and Little Honey. Blessed is definitely a return to form and feels like the first time Lucinda has really nailed the style she’s been circling since West. One of the first things I noticed was the reliance on repetition that has always served her well. I’ve always felt her ability to say something so simply and imbue it with such subtleties on each repetition is part of her genius as an artist.
I Don’t Know How You’re Living has really struck a personal chords with me and the opening line to Seeing Black hit me like a sledgehammer upon first listen. I could have done without some of the production choices and Blessed doesn’t sound quite as lush as something like Essence or even my much maligned West. The Kitchen Tapes, however, are a masterwork and recall some of the simplicity of the self-titled album.
A very welcome return to form from one of my all-time favorite artists.
oh, one gripe: I’m really tired of these double vinyl LP’s. I don’t care if it’s 180 gram vinyl, whoever thought it would be a good idea to put only 3 tracks per side? There’s nothing I love more than having a beautiful album interrupted just as it begins to flow. terrible, terrible choice on the part of the vinyl market.
ripleyParticipantWW, I appreciate your enthusiasm but would it be possible for you to contain Blessed reviews to one thread?
ripleyParticipantTKT all the way. I think the production on the official album often gets in the way of the songs. I get what they were going for on a lot of the tracks but listening to the stripped down versions gives these songs the space they need to be great.
ripleyParticipantI feel like the last two tracks should be reversed. Awakening feels like an album closer.
ripleyParticipantI Don’t Know How You’re Living is definitely my favorite track so far! I really love the solo version of Kiss Like Your Kiss. I remember not loving it when I heard the duet with Elvis but this version is great.
ripleyParticipantI’m well. Bummed that I won’t be able to catch Lucinda on this upcoming tour. I’ll be in LA during the Erie, PA show. I’ll be on a plane coming home during the Toronto shows and Ithaca is just a tad too far!
ripleyParticipantremember when people used to just release an album? I’ve always loathed multiple covers, special editions, etc. but thats just the nature of the business these days.

Already have my ticket for TO (Toronto nickname) TO
Erie, An easy 2 & 1/2 hour drive down I-90 for me to catch my first solo Lu show.
Time to get WebMasta to update the shows page please since the list is really growing.Happy holidays to you and Lucinda.
lwjboo! I’m jealous. I will be in LA during the Erie show and would only be back for the second TO show. Not sure if I’ll be able to make it at this junction but I’ll see. If so, we’ll have to meet up again!
ripleyParticipantAwesome. I know 180 gram is the way they do things now but I would prefer standard. I never even listen to my World Without Tears vinyl because I get sick of flipping it over every 3 songs. I’d prefer a single record.
ripleyParticipantShe’s performing Samantha on Jeffery Ross this week. It’s a shame this album still isn’t out yet.
